1968 Tale Feathers VOLUME 2 CHATSWORTH HIGH SCHOOL Chatsworth, Illinois “DEDICATION” MRS. ELVERTA KAY BERRY “Dedication is the trademark of the hard-working instructor of our business education classes. Her endeavors in typing, shorthand, personal typing, bookkeeping, office practice, and general business classes have helped us all in these “happiest years”, and it is with great pride we dedicate the 1968 Tale Feathers to Mrs. Elverta Kay Berry. 2 ADMINISTRATION Congratulations, seniors! You and your families have every right to be proud of your accomplishments. As the class of 1968 you should have many fond memories of your last year here. The athletic teams and their outstanding records, one of which proved to be the best in the school’s history, the senior play which dampened some of the players, and the trip that was rerouted at the last minute, are just some of the year’s happenings not easily forgotten. Certainly too, 1 would be remiss in my responsibilities if I didn’t try at this last opportunity to pass on a little of my personal philosophy to you. Remember as you pass through life’s stages the word challenge, and don’t be afraid to accept one, for this is the spice of life. Challenges are to be conquered, they are life’s hills to be climbed. And if the hill seems large, think how you will feel when you reach the peak. Life without challenge can be a tiresome way of existence. Again we wish you all the best of everything, and don’t forget your years at Chatsworth High. MR. ROBERT STUCKEY (Superintendent) Four years ago you probably thought that this time would never arrive. Through the combined efforts of the Board of Education, the Faculty, your parents, and you, it has and you find that it’s not the end but the beginning. Each of you is ready to take the next step. Your belief in the existence of a Supreme Being, in a Democracy, and in yourself is all that you need to enable you to take this step. Remember, no one owes you anything but an opportunity. What you do with this opportunity is your responsibility. May you be successful when this time arrives. 3 MR. R. 0. K1RKHAM (Principal) THE HAPPIEST YEARS’’ It is the purpose of the 1968 Talefeathers to unfold the events of the year as the seasons unfold-fall, winter, and spring. The completed work will be a book of memories— memories of a wonderful year at our alma mater. The seasons were good to Chatsworth High this year. A warm autumn came with football games, the junior play, Homecoming, and Thanksgiving holidays. As winter came, the weather turned colder, and students quickened their paces in happy anticipation of Christmas vacation-the two weeks of calm before the storm of semester exams. We went to basketball games, the senior play, and kept up with the news with the Tatler. Then came spring, and Chatsworth High was at her best. The prom, final exams, and other class activities kept us busy, but not too busy to look toward graduation with mixed emotions. The seniors leave Chatsworth High to go on to college, trade school, or a job. Others stay behind, looking forward to the year they will be seniors. To those leaving, may the 1968 Talefeathers remind you of those happy years. Members of the Junior Talc Feathers Staff 4 THOSE HAPPY SMILES MRS. JEANNE BERGAN English III and II MRS. MR. LEEON CARRICO Mr. Carrico, Senior sponsor, plays a very important role in the activities of the Senior class, which have included the annual Senior trip. Besides being athletic director and teaching several math classes, he finds time to attend school at the University of Illinois, where he is currently attaining his Master’s Degree. His other activities have included such jobs as supervising director at Camp Heffernan, Lake Bloomington. The Senior class, after attending Chatsworth High School for four years, have taken their final steps through the halls of their beloved School. Highlighting their wonderful years at C. H. S. have been the Junior and Senior class plays, Junior-Senior Prom, many money making activities and the annual Senior trip. The Seniors have experienced many trials and tribulations, but have succeeded in accomplishing their goal. 20 JUNIOR CLASS BOTTOM FROM LEFT: Schmid; Hornickle; Hubly, E.; Kyburz; Gerdes; Hendershott; Shols; SECOND ROW: Haberkom; Somers; Watson; Ashman; Davis; Kurtcnbach; Cording; Reinitz; THIRD ROW: Hubly, D.; Harvey; Gerth; Bailey, Rork; Quinn; Hurt: Wahls; FOURTH ROW: Mullens, Conibear; Stuckey; Gregory; Augsburger; Lighty; Murphy; FIFTH ROW: Klehm; Scher: Hughes; Milstead; Kemmer; Rebholz: Diller; Weller. With the hard work and efforts of our coaches, in addition to the poised prowess of the “Mighty Bluebirds,” C.H.S. managed to achieve a highly successful athletic campaign. Starting off the school year’s string of successes was a fine 7-2 effort by the varsity football squad. Paced by the excellent running of Denny Kurtenbach and Ron Snow the pass catching of Mark Haberkorn and Dale Gillette and the smooth quarter-backing of Mike Somers, the Bluebirds held six opponents scoreless in recording their fine effort. Basketball carried on this winning tradition more than capably as the defensive-minded Birds soared to its most victorious year in history with an outstanding 22-4 record. Leading the bustling Bluebird attack was Gary Irwin, Dale Gillette, Mark Haberkorn, Mike Somers, and Denny Kurtenbach. Also contributing to C.U.S.’s fine performance were Kenny Kurtenbach, Dan Cavanaugh, Dick Cording, Cletus Watson, and Jerry Kurtenbach. Track too had its fine stars as the Birds swept to many first place victories under the direction of lead coach Gordon Fisher. Much of the success story written on the Bluebirds this year has to center on Chatsworths’ fine and capable coaching staff. Athletic director and head football coach Leeon Carrico continually had his charges ready for action. New coach to the V.V., Denny Lehnus, brought his slow, pattern style offense and hustling “Bluebird” defense to Chatsworth and had great success. As we dream on, we find that the class of 1969 has accepted an invitation to tour the Kingdom of Lexingtonshire. As we approach Chatsworth Castle Mark Aberle paves the way by slaying dragon after dragon with his bayonet dressed in his “Fruit of the Loom” armor. As we find out at a later date, Mark’s bayonet was a leading topic of discussion after the seniors returned from their recent trip to a far away kingdom. We are met at the door by Queen Dehm Glennavere who expresses her sincerest regrets that her husband. King Kenneth Kurtenbach the bold, couldn’t be here to greet us because he is meeting with his world renowned, fearless, muscle-bound, rugged knights of the Square Table. This is an emergency meeting for only the elite members of his table. The queen takes us to the meeting hall where the most important agenda of the day was the strategy on how to recapture one of the fairest maidens of the land, Damsel June Ann Pool. Suggestions were made on who should be assigned to rescue this fair maiden from the grasp of the mysterious black knight. At the very mention of this mysterious villain all of the knights of the Square Table faint with the exception of the bravest knight of all. Sir Gary Irwin. Gary is a dashing figure with shining armor and his sword dangling from his ear. Me promptly volunteers for the assignment and is quickly carried away by the wonderfulness of his coordinated feet. After Sir Gary departs we meet the members of the table who so suddenly took sick. Sir Duane of Dassow recovers and will not talk to us until he is given his pipe. Sir Daniel of Cavanagh, (better known as chivalrous Dan) awakens and when asked why he didn’t volunteer for the job he replied, “Come on gang, give me a break.” Prince Dennis Kurtenbach, the royal sportsman, is revived by his brother, the King, who asks him why he didn’t volunteer. He states that the Royal Academy has given him a full ride on a football scholarship and he couldn’t risk injuring himself. After the adjournment of the meeting the King begins to plan for the annual ball to be held that evening. He contacts Cheryl Honnegger the Royal Barmaid concerning the refreshments to be served that evening. She said the ale had been sent by way of her two fastest delivery boys, Mark Kerber and Larry Gerdes. Squealing their carts for nearly half a kilometer in haste to get the ale to the king, the boys almost hit Marcia Fisher, who was planting trees, aided by her assistants Nancy Cording and Linda Hornickel, at a nearby farmhouse. After the Ball Committee, headed by the Royal Happening Organizers” who double as court jesters Dan Galloway and Rosemary Franey, has accounted for all the ale, Squire Brian Bachtold, the leader of the local serf union 103, who always handles every situation with great diplomacy and tact, was called on to help with the ball. The King then sends for his royal cook, Ramona Schmidt, and her able assistant, Rosemarie Hornickel, who are preparing the food for the ball. They were instructed to contact Squire Dale of Gillete, the overseer of the farm lands of the royal manor, to procure the supplies needed for the feast. The Royal Hairdresser, Nancy Zorn, is summoned to the Queen’s quarters to prepare the queen for the festivities. A rumor has it that Nancy was once the royal coachman but was demoted because her driving made the queen nervous. Also summoned was the royal secretary, Jill Shafer, who moonlights by selling insurance to knights before they go into battle. Jane Hornstein, royal seamstress was fitting the queen’s dress for the ball. Fairley Lady Jan Conibear rides up with speed on her wonder horse, Duke. Lady Jan is head of the royal stables. Meanwhile, the king is conferring with a page. Dennis Gregory, who is the leader of the band. “The Square Table Four”, that will play for the ball. The king is concerned over the recent developments in the field of music. Dennis assures him, however, that his renowned song birds, Lady Carol of Schade and Lady Priscilla Lang of Agnerville will present an enjoyable evening of music. It is now the evening of the ball and the guests are arriving. First to be announced is Lord David and Lady Carol Hanna of Garden boom. They arrived on their elegant, but old, gray steeds, named, Cheve and Rolet. Also arriving are Princess Brenda Schlabowske and her sister-in-law Debra of Rodneyville. Princess Victoria Dohman arrived next and it was announced that she would soon become Queen Victoria of Twiggland. Also expected were ladies Terri of Somers and Mary of Kemnetz. These two intelligent ladies are suspected to be the secret advisors to the king on academic affairs. When all the guests had been presented to the king and queen, the festivities began. However, no sooner had they sat down to eat than in came the mysterious Black Knight on his black Catalina Charger. Before anyone could stop Sir Gary, the Gallant, he had challenged the Black Knight to a joust. Sir Gary draws his sword and with the momentum thrust himself down the stairs. Sir Gary rises from his fall under complete control of his emotions and goes on to slay the mysterious Black Knight. As he rips off the Black Knight’s head gear he is surprised to discover that it is none other than his former classmate John Jacob Scher, who had been stripped of his lordship one year previous to the slaying. Sir Gary was an easy victor and was reunited with the fair maiden June Ann Pool and they lived happily ever after. As the class of 1969 makes its departure it regrets that this will be the last evening the two classes will spend together in the time of Camelot. 57 Honor’s Day—Its Memories Mr. Kapper and Mr. Kirkliam with N.H.S.
