Those circumstances which troubled and those events which thrilled us'-whether to laughter, to tears, or to sudden awareness-are now merged in our minds on the common ground of pleasant and fruitful years in freedom. And we have everyone to thanlc for this freedom. Qur forefathers created the system of government which provides for us an atmosphere of political and spiritual freedom. Gur parents and the administration have set up a school system under freedom: although the relentless homework assignments never seem to let us escape, our choice to succeed is our freedom. For freedom is choosing the necessary way to our desired goals. The words in our lnoolcs have taught us our lessons in math and French and chemistry, hut we have our teachers alone to thanlc for our lessons in life. Guidance and love cannot spill forth from hoolcsg it was the men and women malcing our school a living institution who, rather than leading us. opened the door for us and pointed to the beautifully open outside Vv'e must not falter now that we have reached the top step heyond these opened doors. Only confident strides can preserve for us and for those who have done so much for us the beautiful freedom of the United States. Strandine lx! ' .ii , fr. ,X . ' s I. XJ' iiif A A I . I X. . I if fry, Glass gfistory THE CLASS OF 1961 is unique in that we have attended Senior High School for only three years: however, looking back, we seem to have packed more activities, projects, experiences, and good times into our three years than all the former classes put together. There was our first wonderful sophomore year under the able leadership of our class officers, John Storey, Bob Klase. Lynn Strandine and John Hall. The most outstanding event was our participation in the First Annual Spring Festi- val. lVlany of us took part in both the Concert and the G.A.A. Show and displayed by our enthusiasm and interest our de- sire lor the continuation of this combined activity. As we finished up our first exciting year in the school, our new home. we were proud to have our own uhundle of energy, Linda Miller. chosen to represent us on the Cheerleading Squad and our swell sophisticatef' Noelle Quakenbush, elected to the Twirling Squad. ' The next year seemed to come quickly, and it brought with it new adventures we were eager to explore. The fall ushered in a First--the one gigantic, combined sports, Homecoming, presided over by a Fall Sports Queen. Finally. there they were in the colors of the rainbow-blue, red and green. Oi course. our Class Ringsl Vve knew the year was passing quickly when May came and brought with it the College Boards we'd all been dreading. What else occurred in May? Why, of course. the biggest Student Council Campaign in the history of Chatham High School was conducted. We threw ourselves into it with all our enthusiasm and came out with the best man for the job-Art Harrigan. But we saved the best 'til last. September came and we were seniors. Under John Halls capable leadership we en- joyed a memorable and fruitful year. Football and soccer will never be forgotten. Homecoming was especially meaningful because we were full of spirit and enthusiasm for our teams and overllowing pride in our Fall Sports Queen, Linda Chl. ' rf IQ, . Q. ,D ' P k' It J ' V . . rpm. Although the senior year was filled with the hustle-bustle of too many activities, the tenseness of college acceptances, and the abundance of schoolwork, we shall all remember it as a most wonderful time. The friends we made--1 at first simply through the bonds of being seniors, but later developing into something deeper-will never be forgotten. The Fall Sports Festival was launched on Tuesday, Nov. S, when six busloads of C.H.S. students attended the soccer game at Kearny. Our spirits were high as most of the student body marched in the annual homecoming parade on Friday night. All classes and various school clubs and organ- izations constructed floats for the parade. After the arrival at the school, the students witnessed the crowning of the Queen of Fall Sports. Senior boys escorted the court to the throne, the lights were tumed oil., and when the lights flashed on again, Bob Jones, presi- dent ol: the Varsity Club, had crowned Linda Ohl Queen of Sports. After being presented with two dozen roses, Queen Linda was es- corted around the gym by Bob Jones, fol- lowed by her court. Linda presided over the Pep Rally which followed, at which the cap- tains and coaches of the football and soccer team addressed the student body, Vtfith the help of the cheerleaders, twirlers, and band, school spirit rose in anticipation of the foot- ball game to be played the next day. Saturday the exciting weelcend was cli- maxed by the Chatham-Madison Football Game. The court made its second appearance there as they were driven around the field in convertibles. Although the Eslcies weren't successful in either of their games, all C.l'l.S. students agreed that the weelcend was a tre- mendous success. Everyone is loolcing forward to Homecoming, 1961, and the outgoing sen- iors will laeep this weeltend as a pleasant memory of Chatham High School. This year Chatham participated for the ttrst time in the American Field Service Program for exchanging students with other lands.
