The New America and C. H. S. lt is imperative today that high school students and particularly thom- in the graduating classes proceed with a definite purpose which will contribute to America's war effort and inevitable victory. Before the student can successfully establish such a purpose, he nulst discover the answers to two questions: What am I fighting for? How can I best accomplish that objective Here are the answers as I see them: I am fighting for an America that will press forward and conquer the future, and now, as never before, it faces us directly: the future of mankind. It will he American genius which will lead in that kind of conquestfAmerican leadership which will create a future family of nations. That family of nations will require an elder brother, strong, wise and generously understanding. Ameri- ca must be that 'elder hrother. I can help to accomplish this objective by detemiining the task I urn hest fitted for and where I can serve to most advantage. Whether it is on the farm, in the factory or on the battlefield, I must serve Uncle Sam where I can serve him best. I must prepare myself to do my job hy striving for utmost perfection in whichever field I choose, and then I must apply what I have learned to the immediate job at hand. In initial preparation, I must shoot for the A in my school work, I must develop myself physically through ath- letics, and I must follow a rigid program of self discipline. To he mentally alert, physically strong, and morally sound must be my goal. In C. H. S., we have asked ourselves those questions. Here are our answers: 1. C. H. S. Service Record Active: United States Navy Qllj United States Army llj United States Marine Corps QU Reserve:Amiy Air Corps I4-J United States Army I4-I Marine Corps ill Naval Air Corps llj 2. 74 Graduating Seniors 3. Honor Roll Standing of 25 per cent C, H. S. 4. Boys' and girls' athletic associations 5. Student govcming holly 5. Unanimous enrollment in National High School Victory Corps 7. Inauguration of new 'svictoryv courscs 8. Enrollment in Civilian Defense and other war activities 9. Problems of American Democracy 10. Discussions of post-war prohlems Brief consideration of this list is proof enough that C. H. S. is prepar- ing the soldiers of today and in addition, is educating the citizens of tomorrow. But the rcal job is just beginning! There will he more blood, sweat, and tears hefore that vision of the new Americafuppermost in our minds-4 is achieved. After the war is over, we must increase our effort until we al- tain that goal. This means not merely building and fighting the planes, ships, guns, and tanks now to win the war-fhut later through education and sacrificefe building the new America that will lead the peace. C45
