THE CHATHAM CHATTER RALPH F BATES Supel mtendent of Chatham Schools HAROLD L SPICER Instluctol ln Sclence Ten years ago the Class of 31 was Just gradu atmg from the second grade How long ago xt ems to us who are Just leavlng back to tht tlme when the multxphcatlon tables were our Chlef concern and the theory of electrolytlc dl assoclatxon dld not even exlst for us' It IS enough to make us feel qulte old and wlse It was at that txme that Mr Bates and Mr Splcer first started work at thelr present posl txons ln Chatham I-lxffh School Mr Bates as bu pezvlsxng Prlncxpal and Mr Splcer as instructor ln sclence That they have worked falthfuliy and efllclently IS shown whenever two alumnl meet As soon as Chatham Hugh and nts teachers are mentloned one or the other will say some thmg about these two teachers Mr Bates as we dlscovered ln Assembly not long ago had a large share ln securing the Prln possesslon of the showcase 1n the hall Many are the talks that Mr Bates has glven us ln assembly whlch have taught as and helped us He has shown a personal lnterest 1n each one of us and we can count hlm as a frlend Of course Mr Splcer stands out especlally fox hls work xx 1th the band Started in 1920 wlth only flve PIECES It has grown untxl we have thc tvx enty hve strong band of 1931 most of whlch has been tramed by Mr bplcer hlrnself Remember the bclence Clukk that energetlcallv started organlzatlon whlch speclallzed partxcu larly ln bangs smoke and co0k1es That was another of the lnterestlng projects ln vuhlch Mr Splcer played a large part So we leave these two falthful teachers and fI'19IlLlS on Frlday to uphold the standards they have set us .
