THE CHATHAM CHATTER The Band The present Band was organlzed after the Thanksgivxng vacatxon ln the year 1929 under Mr Spxcers able leadership Edward Carpenter Dolbeer Spohr Lmwood Quackenbush Henry Spohr Amzx Dudley Ollve Bray Ernest Hadley Horace Johns Harold Thompson Oscar Laurie Gordon Rxtchle Wlllxam Kondrat George Hoge man Benjamin Tyson Peter Trlola Martm Hutchlnson James Callahan Fred Lewis Albert Reed Stanley Budd and Ted Hogeman composed 1ts membershlp We practlced long and nolslly twice a week over ln the lunchroom iwe had dlsturbed the hard worklng students who made up the elghth perlod and so we had been booted out of our former domxcxle the Lab across the way to the lunch room J It IS sald that charlty suffereth long and IS k1nd If the rest of the school could be posslbly personlfled as Charlty the school certalnly ap peared kmd and lt suffered long ln February when we made our first publlc appearance m chapel We were up on the stage and we played two numbers' And what was more remarkable we recelved some applause We played at one of the home baseball games too We formed ln front of the school on the great day and marched down the mlddle of Faxr 27 mount Avenue behmd Chxef Burke When we arrwed at Main Street we had the entire street from Faxrmount to Passaic blocked oft' for our majestlc ensemble And because of our lnspxred playing Chatham beat Wharton 13 to 1 But stnll further successes were ID store for us Mr Spicer had apparently bribed the American Leglon for we played ln that worthy organxza txons parade We had a truck all to ourselves although we were pretty crowded and we d1d manage to play a few recognlzable tunes when the truck stopped We looked the part too lf we never d1d before Instead of the usual medley of brown blue and gray pants and many colored shlrt the whole outfit was done up ln a cute little outfit of white pants and shirts and blue coats It was voted a crowning success by all who saw but dldn t hear the band as lt sped by We opened our second year of exlstence w1th a bang bang as Mlss Suydam would say by play mg at the begmnmg and endlng of chapel The membershlp was decreased consxderably due to graduatlon droppmg out travel etc so Mr Splcer organized a beglnners band to JOID the advanced band as soon as It had progressed that far One fine day nt dld and appeared ln chapel along wlth the other sectlon and With the exceptxon that one or two people played the fCont1nued on page 31l 1 . , . . . . , 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 - 1 1 ' - 1 1 1 1 ' . . . , 1 1 1 - , 1 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 . . rl 11 . . . 1 1 1 ' 1 . . . . . , . 1 ' 1 1 1 ' 1 1 - - 1 1 1 1 -1 ' Y 1 V . . . , . . - 1 - , , u 11 - 1 - 1 . 1

THE CHATHAM CHATTER Hr- D1 amatlc Club For many years the play 1n the Sprlng had been a customary event ln whlch only SBDIOTS took part However less and less xnterest was shown ln dramatxcs as years went by So many people were busy wlth art music and athletlcs that lt was hard to even form casts from the Semor classes Flnally ID 1029 Mrs Foster who had charge ot dramatlcs at that t1me decided to form a dra matxc club Th1s was done and a crowd from the three hlghest classes turned out They named the club Chatter Thesplans and were all very enthuslastlc The same year they gave thelr first productlons In the wlnter they gave two one act plays The Wonder Hat and Mlss C1v1l1zat1on The great success of these two plays made the members ambltlou for better thlngs That sprlng Qual 1ty Street was gxven wlth a very able cast ln fact they were all wonderful No one can forget how charmlng Mary Sargent was ln the lead1ng role Phoebe The next year ln the Wlnter three more one act plays were glven They were remarkably well plcked each one entlrely dltferent from the other There was a mysterlous one Wlll O the Wlsp and a funny one Town Hall Tomght and then a dlalogue between two Dresden figures Manl 2b k1n and M1n1k1n In the spr1ng came The Youngest wlth an experlenced cast Douglas Smlth who was the youngest filled a very mter estmg part to perfectxon He was bubbllng over wxth v1tal1ty and really lxved h1s part Thls year IS stlll fresh 1D every ones mlnd There were agam three one act plays whlch were produced wlth the same success that has marked all of the plays that the club has glven They were Knave of Hearts Judge Lynch and The Lost Sllk Hat Agaxn three dmfferent types were glven flrest maklng the audlence roar Wlth laughter and then tlngle wlth fear Just a few weeks ago the latest play and at the same tlme the crownmg success of all the productlons was glven Sherlock Holmes course every one knows the great detectlve of llterature but to see hlm really ID actlon was far better than merely readlng hxs adventures Thls part was taken by one of the best actors the Hlgh School has ever known Allan Rleser There was somethxng about h1s manner of speakmg h1s bearmg and his polse which made h1s character lzatlon dlstmguxshed Alfred Roby and Nancy Jackson were Mr and Mrs Larrabee two crooks who held Allce Falkner played by Marjorle Mac Gregor a captlve Alfred qulte frlghtened us lCont1nued on page 317 4 --... - A 5 X y , , I 1 gi ' . . 1 l if l 1 f ...Q . THE CHATHAM CHATTER 5 Ni ll Blue T1 langle The Blue Trlangle 1S the name glven to the Chatham Hlgh School group of Glrl Reserves It IS run by the women s d1v1s1on of the County Y M C A The oificers for last year were Ohve Bray presldent Peggy LaFoy vlce presxdent Mlldred BOIVIS secretary and Nancy Jackson treasurer M66tlDgS were held twlce a month ID the new school or occaslonally at a member s home Th general program followed along the hues of ser vice soclal act1v1t1es and lnsplratlonal dlscus slons Durmg the year there were several worth whlle dlSCUSSl0DS and talks whxch were of value to all of us Mr Gyer of Boonton spoke about Mlss 1931 an approprlate subject Margaret Lum our advlser told us about her trxp around the world and Mlss Loulse Brown told us about the benefit of domestlc sclence 28 Two card partles were glven All of the hlgh school g1rls were lnvlted so that they might be famxllar wlth the Triangle and Joxn when they became sophomores The proceeds of the second party were glven to the Porto Rlcan Fund Around June all of the senlor g1rls are greatly lnterested ln graduation dresses The Blue Tr1 angle came to their a1d wlth a Bamberger fashlon show Many lovely dresses were dlsplayed and the g1rls had an opportunlty to declde on what they would llke Th1s year representatxves of the group have attended two conferences Ollve Bray went to the State Conventxon and Mlrlam Stokes Nancy Jackson Marle Fleldmg Carolyn Huff Ollve Bray and Mlldred BOIVIB went to the county one at Mountaln Lakes Many valuable ldeas and sug gestlons were gamed IH thls way and we hope that the club w1ll carry them out next year Peggy La Foy .32 , , , . 3 il v I I g ' 3 7 . swf - As , .
