THE LHATHAM CHATTER THL HISTORY OI' THE LL-XSS OF l93l 'fiyi uf' The Lmdm, of the Pilgrims In September 1921 a band of pllgrlms entered the unknovwn reglons of Chatham High School They were a brave and loyal band who stuck at their tasks and dnl not get discouraged even though they walked into many a wrong class during the first vweel-. 'Vlyrtle Riley Gertrud Blatt and Nancy Jackson were VICE presld nt secretary treasurer and Chatter editor respectively In the first ye r Art Jacobus Alfred Coe and Alfred Davis were football men who fought vahently to uphold the dignity of a desplsed Freshman class That year increased home vork kept the Freshxes bound to their books and away from other activities The First Party By the autumn of 1928 the pilgrims had established themselves in the school But instead of glvmg a Thanksgiving feast as first pilgrims had they gave an Oriental party and lnvited the Chinese who turned out to be members of the School after unmaskxng time came Art Jacobus and Mlldred Bo1v1e piloted the class that year whlle Alfred Davis kept the money safe Carl Sargent Chatter editor hardly ever had his notes ready so consequently there was little record of Sophomore proceedings ln the Chatter The only notable event recorded b6Sld9S the was the particlpation of Marcia Butter and Nancy Jackson in the Christmas program as the characters ln a sketch Chrlstmas Shopplng party vu orth chapel called 1' The Rising., Power The Junlors ln 19291 entered Chatham High School a r1s1ng power Pohtlcally soclally and economically they asserted them selves as a school power The new president Benjamln Tyson was inaugurated wlth Nancy Jackson as vice pxesldent and Marjorie Mat Gregor as treasurer Socially the class was prominent Marjorie MacGregor temporarily abandoned her money bags and shone together with Nancy Jackson Mlrlam Stokes and Ohv and Robert Bray as a dramatlc star In the spring of 1930 a colorful dance was glven mak mg the class still more prominent as a social pow er Living condltlons vvere also bettered for for the hrst tlme the family llved together under the care of Mr Eshelman In September the dues were ralsed ShOW1Dg that the class was on a hlgher economic standing The Junlors of the chemistry class showed how economical they were by eating enough ice cream to last a week when they visited Castles Ice Cream plant Just as there were a great many who contested as to who should eat the most ICE cream so there were many who entered Just as heartily lnto the athletlc contest Guerln Bell Ritchie Kron berg and Roby represented the class well in all sports 12 T1 , . . . . - . . . - ' ' v 1 . , , L. , '- . .mx - H U U H I .W . . .-' ' v Y ' 'r h Katherine Pugh was their worthy president, and -V 9 f - , V , ,. . THE CHATHAM CHATTER The Rang., tontroxersv About the end of May there was a d1v1s1on In the Junxor class over the anclent rzng questxon Half of the class wanted xactly what the other half dldn t The tongue battle raged for a whxle and after the votes wer Counted some Walked home wlth downcast and ome wlth elated faces The New Freedom But the rmg controversy was forgotten among the act1v1t1es of summer vacaton and the Senlors entered school ID Sep tember wlth happy faces They entered 1n on the enjoyment of the new freedom They were free to walk up the front steps and ln the front door whenever they pleased and they were free to walk up the mlddle alsle ln chapel Under the able adrnlnlstratlon of Alfred J Roby Jr Presldent and Gertrude Blatt Vlce Presldent helped by the cabmet rSecretary of State Robert Bray and Secretary of Treasury Myrtle Rlleyl the varlous buslness of a Senior year was managed well Exutmg moments A senlor year as everyone knows IS full of excltmg moments One of the first of these was the arrxval of the rlngs and pms followed by a week or two of constantly shmmg them An eye wltness tells of one gurl who cleaned her nng very lndustrlously every 13 mornlng ln hlstory class' Another 8XClt1Dg tlme w as havlng the plctures taken The whole school was excited when the Basketball trophy whlch Semor boys had helped to wln was pre sented ln chapel At the tlme thls 15 wrltten each day has more and more excltement because lt w1ll be all over when you read thls But thls IS a hxstory so hlstory must be told In the three one act plays as well as ln Sher lock Holmes the Senlors played lmportant parts You all remember how well Marjorle Mac Gregor Nancy Jackson Alfred Roby Benjamm Tyson Earl Kronberg and all the rest played thelr parts so we need not tell you Then too ln the lunchroom Fveryone had such a hne t1me that Mr Jeter had to use all hls strategy to get them out at 11 30 The 1 losmg Days There are many many thmgs whlch wlll happen but whlch cannot be recorded here Each Senlor wlll carry away h1s own mem orles and each underclassman wlll have some memory of the Senlor class But after thls hrs tory has been for otten perhaps even after thc Senlor class and all who know them have been forgotten there wlll stxll be a remembrance of us left ID Chatham Hlgh School The name of 1 1 . , .'
