W 1 Y V . il - 4 t c 5 THE CHATHAM CHATTER RALPH F BATES Supel mtendent of Chatham Schools HAROLD L SPICER Instluctol ln Sclence Ten years ago the Class of 31 was Just gradu atmg from the second grade How long ago xt ems to us who are Just leavlng back to tht tlme when the multxphcatlon tables were our Chlef concern and the theory of electrolytlc dl assoclatxon dld not even exlst for us' It IS enough to make us feel qulte old and wlse It was at that txme that Mr Bates and Mr Splcer first started work at thelr present posl txons ln Chatham I-lxffh School Mr Bates as bu pezvlsxng Prlncxpal and Mr Splcer as instructor ln sclence That they have worked falthfuliy and efllclently IS shown whenever two alumnl meet As soon as Chatham Hugh and nts teachers are mentloned one or the other will say some thmg about these two teachers Mr Bates as we dlscovered ln Assembly not long ago had a large share ln securing the Prln possesslon of the showcase 1n the hall Many are the talks that Mr Bates has glven us ln assembly whlch have taught as and helped us He has shown a personal lnterest 1n each one of us and we can count hlm as a frlend Of course Mr Splcer stands out especlally fox hls work xx 1th the band Started in 1920 wlth only flve PIECES It has grown untxl we have thc tvx enty hve strong band of 1931 most of whlch has been tramed by Mr bplcer hlrnself Remember the bclence Clukk that energetlcallv started organlzatlon whlch speclallzed partxcu larly ln bangs smoke and co0k1es That was another of the lnterestlng projects ln vuhlch Mr Splcer played a large part So we leave these two falthful teachers and fI'19IlLlS on Frlday to uphold the standards they have set us . 'Vlyrtle Riley Gertrud Blatt and Nancy Jackson were VICE presld nt secretary treasurer and Chatter editor respectively In the first ye r Art Jacobus Alfred Coe and Alfred Davis were football men who fought vahently to uphold the dignity of a desplsed Freshman class That year increased home vork kept the Freshxes bound to their books and away from other activities The First Party By the autumn of 1928 the pilgrims had established themselves in the school But instead of glvmg a Thanksgiving feast as first pilgrims had they gave an Oriental party and lnvited the Chinese who turned out to be members of the School after unmaskxng time came Art Jacobus and Mlldred Bo1v1e piloted the class that year whlle Alfred Davis kept the money safe Carl Sargent Chatter editor hardly ever had his notes ready so consequently there was little record of Sophomore proceedings ln the Chatter The only notable event recorded b6Sld9S the was the particlpation of Marcia Butter and Nancy Jackson in the Christmas program as the characters ln a sketch Chrlstmas Shopplng party vu orth chapel called 1' The Rising., Power The Junlors ln 19291 entered Chatham High School a r1s1ng power Pohtlcally soclally and economically they asserted them selves as a school power The new president Benjamln Tyson was inaugurated wlth Nancy Jackson as vice pxesldent and Marjorie Mat Gregor as treasurer Socially the class was prominent Marjorie MacGregor temporarily abandoned her money bags and shone together with Nancy Jackson Mlrlam Stokes and Ohv and Robert Bray as a dramatlc star In the spring of 1930 a colorful dance was glven mak mg the class still more prominent as a social pow er Living condltlons vvere also bettered for for the hrst tlme the family llved together under the care of Mr Eshelman In September the dues were ralsed ShOW1Dg that the class was on a hlgher economic standing The Junlors of the chemistry class showed how economical they were by eating enough ice cream to last a week when they visited Castles Ice Cream plant Just as there were a great many who contested as to who should eat the most ICE cream so there were many who entered Just as heartily lnto the athletlc contest Guerln Bell Ritchie Kron berg and Roby represented the class well in all sports 12 T1 , . . . . - . . . - ' ' v 1 . , , L. , '- . .mx - H U U H I .W . . .-' ' v Y ' 'r h Katherine Pugh was their worthy president, and -V 9 f - , V , ,. . Glee Club Notes Presldent Myrtle Rxley Secretary Marlon MacCrea Llbrarlan Isabel Straub Every thlrd perlod on Mondays and Wednes days weve probably annoyed you wlth our mu slcal efforts the culmxnatxon of wh1ch was shown at the concert May 8 Even though the Glee Club dxd lose a great many of 1tS old stand by last year thlS year was certa1nly a much better one The success was due malnly I thlnk to two thlngs The work and patlence of Mrs Krause and the cooperatlon and mterest of the glrls themselves We ve had some very lnterestlng experx nces such as Slnglllg' wlth a large chorus of glrls up 1n Morrlstown We sang two very well known splrltuals Roll Jordan Roll and Swxng Low Then too we had the pleasure of smgmg the selectlon Who Is Jean before the Womans 30 Club At Christmas tlme we serenaded Mr Jeter Mr Bates and MISS Durgan wlth Chrlstmas car ols Although It was qulte chxlly we kept our selves Warm by smglng all the more loudly After we had flmshed carolmg we went to the home of one of the glrls for refreshments where all the glrls had a pleasant evenlng Ever slnce Chrlstmas we have been worklng on the cantata The Lady of Shalott The con cert last month was the result of much hard work on the part of Mrs Krause and of the glrls Solos were sung by Murlel Hopplng Isabel Straub Inez Nunn and Myrtle Rlley The stage decorated wxth pretty sprlng flowers was very attractlve We hope that all the glrls wlll come back to Glee Club next yea and that they wlll contlnue to g1VE Mrs Krause the support and cooperatlon that they gave th1S year MYRTLE RILEY 31 .
