PATSY JANE CLEMENT There are not enough ways in which we could express enough thanks and appreciation to a per- son who had devoted her time and energy helping us. We will remember her frank, practical ad- vice, her willingness to help and to understand, and her sage remarks long after our high school days. She is, not only a wonderful teacher, but also our lasting friend -a friend for whom we have the greatest respect, admiration, and love. The Senior Class extends to you, Mrs. Cle- ment, our sincere thanks for all you have done for us through the past years. In Memoriam JANICE ELAINE YEATTS With a sense of deep loss and cherished re- membrances, the members of the class of 1962 pay loving tribute to the memory of Janice Yeatts, a fellow class member who left us in the spring of 1961. Truly an inspiration to all who knew and loved her, Janice had worked under tremendous diffi- culty since the onset of her illness during her fresh- man year. Her friendliness, integrity, devotion to duty, and lack of self- pity are among those quali- ties which can serve as guideposts in our future. ftAaartfc Ufi- 1 Mrs. Shelton, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Custer, and Pearl Pannell prepare lunch for the school. She represents the school in various parades. Ceceila has been especially busy during her senior year as she is art editor of the annual, co- captain of cheerlead- ers, and member of various clubs. 74 The annual alumni basketball game was held on December 28, 1961 at the armory. After the two exciting games, entertainment was provided by the majorettes and demonettes, Jean Giles and Trudy Roach, and Ray Hayes and the Willis Sisters. Linda Gammon and Billy Batterman were crowned king and queen, after which they reigned over the dance. The king and queen lead off the first dance after the game. 75 Mr. Bryant and members of the faculty watch the game. SENIOR AWARDS BALFOUR HONOR PLAQUE TRI-HI-Y GOOD ATTITUDE. . . . The Rev. Mr. McHenry, Cabell Montgomery, Ronny Fretwell, class president, Rev. Mr. Loving and Rev. Mr. Hamn presented the opening program. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT You must understand that I don ' t make a practice of eavesdropping, but on the day of the last class meeting of the seniors, as I was cleaning the closet, the door slammed shut. Since I couldn ' t make myself heard above the voices outside, I had to be content to remain in the closet until the meeting was over. When the meeting got underway, I couldn ' t help over- hearing the discussion; and I must say it interested me greatly. A tense atmosphere filled the room as the seniors, one by one, began to dispose of cherished possessions which they would no longer need after leaving C.H.S. Ronny Fretwell, class president, was the first to announce his decision. He would give his ability to speak French to EddieMelton. He was followed by Pat Saunders who decided to leave her extra Sabre Club pin to Janet Harris. Not to be outdone. Peg Saunders cheerfully announced that she would leave her ability to get along with Miss Bell to poor little John Ritchie. From the rear of the room Faye Boles stood to state that she would leave her courting methods, which are currently being copyrighted, to Cheryl Sours. Everything was moving very smoothly and swiftly. Each senior was bubbling with excitement and eager to announce his bequest to the class. Into this happy atmosphere swept a wave of melancholy as they rea- lized that they were soon to leave their alma mater forthe last time. With a quiver in their voices, Dasie and Masie Boles announced that they would leave all of their good times to the rising senior class. To change this atmosphere of melancholy came the happy, jubilant Charles Hawkins, who stated in his usual satirical manner that he would leave his remaining supply of Metrecal to Joe Terry. Joe Mit- chell uttered words that resulted in the supreme sacri- fice- -those that he would leavehis date list of Danville girls to J. E. Zampella. Cabell Montgomery and Betty Lee Neal stood together and jointly bequeathed their true friendship and togetherness to Nancy Jo Taylor and Ann Fox. They even generously included two back seats in the auditorium for first period study hall. Following their announcement, Jimmy Motley succeeded in breaking the serious mood which pre- vailed by declaring that he was just simply trying ' to leave. The laughter continued as Donald Betterton sorrowfully admitted that he must leave his driver’s permit for the third time. The announcements were coming more quickly now than in the beginning of the meeting. Cecelia Herren pulled our her bottle of Light and Bright and pronounced the phrase that made Frances Shelton heir to this beauty aid. Another teacher ' s pet, Sonny Shanaberger, decided to leave his ability to get along with Mrs. Clement to Ralph Hogg. Bobby Barbour, when asked what he was going to leave, replied that he would leave nothing- -that he would take it all with him. J. B. Newby, who is perhaps the most patient member of the class, stated that he would give his bus to anyone who loves children. After a brief moment of contemplation, Jewel Pickral announced that she would leave her A average to Phyllis Craddock. This generous gift was followed by Linda Gammon ' s unique decision to leave her pretty dimples to Louise Thompson. Betty Gibson, who desired that her spirit of giving be unsurpassed by her fellow classmates, decided to leave her independent attitude to anyone who might need it. Growing tired of my home in the dark closet, I decided that I would again attempt to make myself heard. Before I could open my mouth, Myrtle Moore shouted that she would gladly leave her history book to anyone who would want it. After much hesitation, Jimmy Hamner spoke words that left his well-used book, entitled ONE THOUSAND WAYS TO OUTFOX A TEACHER, to Vincent Shelton with the hope that it would be beneficial to him. Miss School Spirit herself, Sarah Shelton, rose from her seat to offer her place on the cheering squad to Rose Mary Motley. A brief sniggle went through the class as Billy Batterman stood to confirm his decision to leave Halloween to trick-or-treaters. Hunt Allen, one of our own working boys, carefully chose his verbal expression that placed his responsibilities as student and employee in the hands of anyone who would be willing to try it. Archie Yeatts expressed his desire that Willie Craddock have the privilege of inheriting his unusual height. Shirley Mayhew, munching away, stood to assert her wish that Sharon Sweet have her ability to chew gum undetected in every class; and James Compton in a relaxing tempo willed his keen desire to be through with school to anyone who would want it. In a gracious manner to a gracious lady Caryl Hogg laid down her many talents at the feet of Doris Meadows. There were only three seniors who had not yet spoken. Joyce Motley after much pondering gave her final declaration in which Betty Sue Sours inherited her comfortable place in English class. The melodious words of Milton Bowen permeated thehalls of our alma mater. They were re-echoed by Bill Fox, who, no doubt, had accepted the gift of Milton Bowen- -that of his musical ability. Finally, the teardrops of Frances Falls awakened her classmates to the greatest joy of all- -the knowledge that she would leave at last. I have recorded the preceding happenings just as I have heard them, and I might add that I was quite relieved when I finally escaped that closet! T CLASS PROPHECY Sit down for a few minutes and imagine your class reunion which will be held in 1972. What ' s better; let me take you there. First of all, we see our old class president, Ronny Fretwell, trying to call everyone to order. Ronny is now the owner of a chain of exclusive new restaurants and serves the most delicious pink and white pills you ever ate. In a far corner we find our sponsor, Mrs. Clement, still in that beige trench coat, arguing politics with Charles Hawkins, who is our new ambassador to Russia. (There is more than one way to win a cold war). Seated on the sofa is Jewel Pic krai East, president of Danville ' s First National Bank, dis ; - cussing loan interest rates with Archie Yeatts. Archie is planning to build a new shopping center of nothing but grocery stores. Betty Gibson isn ' t far behind her friends, for she is married to a handsome pilot in the U.S. Air Force from whom she is taking flight lessons. It is a sure thing she won’t have any parking problems. The handsome Milton Bowen has grown a distinguished looking beard and is now replacing Mitch Miller on his weekly television show. Faye Giles Boles is a marriage counselor in New York State. Since she has taken this posi- tion, New York divorces have been greatly re- duced. Linda Gammon, who is married to an army major, has written a book entitled HOW TO ESTABLISH A HOME IN SOUTH CHILE IN TEN EASY LESSONS. Billy Batterman was always complaining a- bout not getting enough sleep; therefore, he, invented a time-set automatic milker for his dairy. Now he sleeps every morning until 10:00 A.M. Two old friends who have done quite well are J. B. Newby and Donald Betterton. Donald has gone into business for himself and manufac- turers the most darling little cars, which fold up and fit in your pocket. He is very successful except that there seems to be a complaint about unfolding the cars again. J.B. has recently been named president of a new farmers ' co-operative association and is thinking about forming a farmers ' union since that ' s also tax free. Cecelia Herrenhas become a famous fashion designer. Her designs have been increasingly original since her trip to the moon last year. Sarah Shelton decided that math was her real interest and is now teaching algebra in the Dominican Republic. Frances Falls became so pleased with the restaurant business and the many profits derived from it that she built her shop across from the new high school where she has introduced a new sandwich called Consolidation. Betty Lee Neal has won fame as a columnist for the New York Times. Her favorite subject is on the correct method of teaching journalism. Shirley Mayhew has become a fashion model and last week was featured on the cover of Play- boy magazine. Jimmy Hamner is a professor of United States history at the University of Virginia. Bobby Bar- bour, who also became very interested in history, has been touring Europe and lecturing at various universities. Dasie and Masie Boles are very happily married and have become efficient secretaries for Chatham ' s new industry. Peg Saunders was the real surprise to every- one. She became so interested in Harold ' s new law course that she became a lawyer. Now, she and her husband have a law firm in California. The scientist of the class was Joe Mitchell, who is at the present working on a rocket to go to the sun. He ' s forever quoting those weird formulas. As usual, Pat Saunders and Caryl Hogg are busy chatting together. Pat has developed her great love for the home by becoming an interior decorator. Caryl may be found dancing in Radio City Music Hall with the Rockettes. Cabell Montgomery has her doctor’s degree in English but for the present is at home with William and the children. Jimmy Motley and his charming wife, Marie, are happily married and keep quite busy with their eight children. Hunt Allen has continued working in drug- stores. Now, he owns a chain of them throughout the country. After devoting considerable time to the sub- ject, James Comptonhas found a job working with the United States Government. Joyce Motley, who had always been inter- ested in business, has become head of the secre- tarial department at Paramount Studio in Holly- wood. Sonny Shanaberger, who has taken over his father ' s Shanaberger Homes has promised each member of the class a new home. And so have materialized the fortunes of the graduating class of 1962. It was wonderful to visit together, to remember together, and to plan together for another class reunion. 83 CITIZENS OF CHATHAM HIGH fesi :- ' Ilf i - 1 | rata ■jf : ¥ : } I n I : , lar « 89k « i ia i If ? m h i ti29 J| i Jftlr - i i L -dSK: p-gjgF g p|pp n . r 1 jjjV ■;• k jJFji 8- ■ jj r ‘Jj gv {Hi Sm f ' RJ.
