Giles Diploma Radford College •4 Hazel Lowe B. S. Radford Joyce Harris B. S. Madison Our Past 1951 — We started our four years at Chatham High School as timid freshmen in September of 1951 . We had been attending classes at the high school for two years, but we realized for the first time as we began our freshman year that we were now starting on the journey that when successfully completed would bring us to the place where we now stand. As we look back from this point, it is difficult to realize that four years have passed in such a seemingly short while. Our freshman year was filled with new experiences. Mrs. Cocke was our homeroom teacher and we owe her many thanks for helping us get started our first year. Our class officers were: Bobby Neal, President; E. W. Owen, Vice-President; Effie Motley, Secretary-Treasurer. The class took an active part in athletics from the very first, but other than that, the entire year was really uneventful. By the time we had gotten fully adjusted to the high school routine the year was over and were looking forward to our sophomore year. 1952 — We came eagerly back to C.H.S. in September of 1952 to begin our second year. Mrs. Cocke was still here to welcome us as homeroom teacher. Our class officers were: Bobby Neal, President; E. W. Owen, Vice-President; Phyllis Tyree, Secretary; Charles Haymes, Treasurer. The members of our class became more interested in school activities. Under the guidance of Mrs. Cocke we started the task of raising money to finance the Sophomore-Senior banquet. After sponsoring sales, dances, and other social activities we honored the Senior class with a success- ful banquet at the Country Club Inn, Danville, Virginia. Our responsibilities grew and we advanced in scholastic and extra- curricular standing. There were times when we caught a fleet- ing glimpse of the lofty heights scaled only by the Seniors. These brief glimpses gave us a more substantial goal to work toward. We longed for the day when we would become Juniors and in a seemingly short time another year had run its course. 1953 — Our Junior year brought double responsibilities. Because there was no graduating class we undertook the jobs that had beforehand been held by the Seniors. Even though we were con- sidered the leaders we still realized that our goal was only visible but not yet attainable. One half of our high school career was behind us, the other half was left to go. We began to look on the more serious side of life and we worked harder that year than we ever thought we could or would. We elected as our class officers: Leslie Giles, President; Bobby Neal, Vice-President; Mary D. Jenkins, Secretary-Treasurer, and Jean Bigger, Re- porter. After measuring for our Senior rings and making final arrangements for the coming of our Senior year we welcomed a vacation. 1954 — At last, we stand at the doorway, looking out into the future. After years of hard, continuous work, we have reached the goal; the crowning glory. We are Seniors!! With Mrs. Cocke, our loyal friend and teacher still standing beside us we began our last year in Chatham High School. For our Senior class officers we have elected Leslie Giles, President; Effie Mot- ley, Vice-President; Barbara Jones, Secretary, and Ray Comp- ton, Treasurer. This has been a happy, eventful year but we realize that it must come to an end. As the time nears for us to depart from these halls, where we have received knowledge and strength from our many experiences, tears come to our eyes, but we know in our hearts that the task which we began four short years ago is almost complete. We have grown up during our four years here and now we are ready to take our place in the broad, new life which lies before us. As we accept the challenge and step across the threshold into the future, we take with us dear memories of our teachers, our classes, the fun we ' ve had together and the hard work, all of which have made our lives richer. This is a big moment in our lives; a moment when joy and sorrow are mixed. We hate to leave, but we realize that we must expand and grow and make a better world of the place in which we live. So to you, our classmates that are left behind, and to our dear Alma Mater, wo bid GOOD-BYE. As each of us go our own way may we attain our desired crown, with God as our guide. Tonight our program is brought by special request of our well-known celebrity in the vocal field, Miss Judy Hall. We are running a review of the Seniors, of Chatham, Virginia, who gradu- ated ten years ago tonight. Seniors of ' 54, we hope you ' re listening wherever you are! In the sports field we find Charles Haymes, better known as Chuby, coaching the Globe-Trot- ters. As his assistant, though I know you won ' t believe it, is Harold Motley. Bobby Neal is making his own name with the pigskin at Notre Dame. Getting along splendidly in the business world is Dr. Mary Douglas Jenkins. She is head of the Experiment Station in Chatham. While in Chatham we ran into Ray Compton, owner of Western Auto, and Harold Lewis, manager of Leggetts Dept. Store. And as I ' m sure most of you know, E. W. Owen is editor of the New York Times. Have you seen this week ' s Life? On page 59 we find Jill Saunders flashing smiles for Ipana Toothpaste. Also in this same edition is an article on speech defaults from the head of speech thera- peutic at Northwestern, Miss Gene Hall. I ' m sure you ' ve heard about the latest law passed by the Supreme Court. Well, I ' mnot refer- ring to the law tonight but I would like to call your attention to the Chief Justice, Sarah Hurt Friend. I received a letter from Jean Bigger last week those she ' s not Jean Bigger now. She ' s teaching Physical Education at Chatham plus raising a fam- ily.- Her sister-in-law, Effie Motley is the efficient little minister ' s assistant to her husband. They have a very large church in Washington, D. C. Gerald Bryant is managing the Chatham Theater with Wilfred Motley running the projector. Holland Crews is test-driving Ford automobiles to see just how much they can take. On the domestic scene we find Beulah Row- land with a family of five and Rachel Crider with triple set of twins. Barbara Jones is planning a military wedding in September. Haile Shelton is also a family man and makes his living as a state policeman. Donnie and Ronnie Giles married twins from Hollywood. Jewell Bullington designs clothes for the Best Company in New York and Ann Howard Terry helps her on the side when she ' s not teaching the first grade in Long Island. Shirley Perkins is a private secretary in the White House and from what we hear she has her eye on a senator from North Dakota. Leslie Gile s is planning another trip to Venus in his private rocket. Did he really find a planet of women? Betty Jane Dodson writes his notes of each trip but so far they have not been disclosed to the public. O.K., kids, what are you hiding? The former Mary Dana Tune is back in school again. This time at the University of North Caro- lina where she plans to get her Masters Degree. Melvin Haymore is living up the night life in Paris. But don ' t get disturbed, he slept all the way over. Barborie Giles spends most of her time traveling up and down the Eastern coast checking on the Howard Johnson restaurants. This concludes all our class except Ann Montgomery. She will be seen on The Firestone Hour which follows immed- iately. And yours truly is still catting around. We think this class has done pretty well for themselves, don ' t you? But we always thought we were a pretty swell class anyway. Tune in next week, same time, same station, for the Variety Show. Until then this is Phyllis Tyree bidding you all, good-night. 4 Junior Class President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer OFFICERS Francis Shelton Shelby Craddock Shelby Taylor Walton Hayden Merle Craddock Shelby Craddock Bobby Davidson Maribeth Davis Wayne Dodson Betty Duncan Sandra Easley Patsy Fox Jack Hall James Harris Walton Hayden Gladys Hedrick Junior Class Jessie Malone Kitty Mitchell Donald Motley Susie Motley Yvonne Motley Paul Pruitt Marion Slaughter James Sours Shelby Taylor Susie Vaughan Elbridge Walker Eugene White El len Whitehead Harold Wood Sophomore Class Carol I Adkins Elsie Adk ins Lois Agrella Jeanette Anderson Polly Barbour Eunice Betterton Aubrey Boles Billy Brooks Randy Casey Melvin Clark Melvin Craddock Billy Crews Rose Crocker Barbara East Emma Kate Emerson Melvin Emerson Peggy Fox Elnora Giles Billy Harwell John Hazelwood Harry Jackson Pat LaPrade Marion McElroy Dean Martin Helen Martin Jean Martin Rose Meadows Patsy Montgomery Sophomore Class George Moore Nancye Morton Boyd Motley Marie Motley Richard Motley Sandra Motley Rachel Murphy Vaden Nuckols Marie Parker Elizabeth Payne Patsy Poole Jane Reynolds Patsy Shelton Sammy Shorter Nancy Thomas Elizabeth Thompson Mary Lee Tucker Mary K.
