CLASS HISTORY vJ UST a shor t while ago or so it seems, we first entered Chatham High School as Freshmen. It was September 1940 and we had a class of 41 members. With the help of the faculty and the students we soon became acquainted with the routine of the school. We elected our class officers, student council members and were repre- sented in the Glee Club. We entered our sophomore year with a stronger desire to push forward for our future goals. Some of our class members made the basketball and baseball teams. In doing so they brought honor to themselves and the class. The Junior year brought more distinction to our class. Many of us entered the athletic activities of the school. We elected our class officers with Anne Norman as president. Later in the year, we ordered our class rings. To climax the year’s activities we honored the Seniors at a banquet in the Hotel Chatham. At last, the crowning glory! We have reached the goal of dignified Seniors and greeted the incoming Freshmen by initiating them for a week. We selected our class and S. C. A. officers, also the annual staff. The most outstanding event of the year occurred in December when our English class, under the direction of Mr. William Jones, went to New York to see the Shakespearean play, “Othello.” Anne Norman and Elinor Overbey have been selected for valedictorian and satulatorian respectively, and Elinor Overbey also won the honor of having her name placed on the Honor Plaque for achievement, loyality and scholar- ship. Anne Norman was awarded the Whitehead English Medal. Doris Anne Powell won the D. A. R. Citizenship award. As we prepare to move onward, we leave our beloved school with a degree of sadness, a prayer of thankfulness, and a desire that each of us attain our goals in life. Clara James Powell Iris Motley 13
