With the help of the faculty and the students we soon became acquainted with the routine of the school. We elected our class officers, student council members and were repre- sented in the Glee Club. We entered our sophomore year with a stronger desire to push forward for our future goals. Some of our class members made the basketball and baseball teams. In doing so they brought honor to themselves and the class. The Junior year brought more distinction to our class. Many of us entered the athletic activities of the school. We elected our class officers with Anne Norman as president. Later in the year, we ordered our class rings. To climax the year’s activities we honored the Seniors at a banquet in the Hotel Chatham. At last, the crowning glory! We have reached the goal of dignified Seniors and greeted the incoming Freshmen by initiating them for a week. We selected our class and S. C. A. officers, also the annual staff. The most outstanding event of the year occurred in December when our English class, under the direction of Mr. William Jones, went to New York to see the Shakespearean play, “Othello.” Anne Norman and Elinor Overbey have been selected for valedictorian and satulatorian respectively, and Elinor Overbey also won the honor of having her name placed on the Honor Plaque for achievement, loyality and scholar- ship. Anne Norman was awarded the Whitehead English Medal. Doris Anne Powell won the D. A. R. Citizenship award. As we prepare to move onward, we leave our beloved school with a degree of sadness, a prayer of thankfulness, and a desire that each of us attain our goals in life. Well, that time is here and I’ve spent quite a bit of time in research, so here goes: Landon Shelton is now coaching the Duke basketball squad and for the last three years his teams have been the world’s champions. Kermit Parrish started farming after returning from heroic adventure in World War II and is now a very prosperous farmer and capable leader of Pittsylvania county. Garnett Craddock is a lawyer — his brilliant speeches are winning case after case. Billy Dunn seems to be very happy as she goes about her daily routine in her ‘Green ’’-house. We always did think Elinor Overbey would make something of her singing, well, she is now a great radio singer; her theme song is “Whatcha’ Know Joe.” Lena Hedrick is now living on a “turkey farm and enjoys raising little “turkeys.” Her sister, Reba, has finally reached her goal of ambition, manager of Whitehead’s Family store. Dottie Rowland is now coach for the girls at Sweet Briar. Augusta Anne Parrish plays nightly in the Radio City Music Hall in New York. Mary Hyler Sours now has a shop of her own in New York, there she designs clothes for the “Smart Set” which includes members of the class of ’44 of Chatham High School. While I was reading in the paper several weeks ago, I ran across the name of Iris Motley. It was an interview of the President of the United States and his personal secre- tary. Iris is that secretary. Ila Owen, now of New York, is on a world tour making speeches on “Voice Control.” I suppose you have seen in the papers or magazines about the new airport which Barbara Anne Stone designed. Experts say it is the greatest piece of work that has ever been done. Ruby Barbour has made use of her home-economics since she is now the state’ s Home-Economics Advisor. Beulah Shelton is her able assistant. Our little “angel” of mercy, Doris Anne Powell, is now a registered nurse. She is working under Anne Norman who is superintendent of a Philadelphia hospital. Clara James Powell is now a “Post Office” worker. Ruth Bennett has a basketball team of her own. They have gone to the Olympics three times already and are ready to return in the next session and again take away the first honors. In the last game, they just made the other team look like babies. By the way. Dot, I hear you now have a very good job in a store selling fish-hooks to catch suckers. I am sure you have many “customers.” You must come and visit me at my place here at Sing-Sing. As ever. P. S. I am a warden now. Billy Clark WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF— 1. Dot Anderson wasn’t always flirting with other girls’ boy friends? 2. Ruby Barbour lost her dignity? 3. Ruth Bennett wasn’t always seen with a certain milk man? 4. Billy Clark wasn’t always pitching woe? 5. Garnett Craddock couldn’t find out? 6. Billy Dunn didn’t like bus drivers? 7. Lena Hedrick didn’t go “Loving” — Get it? 8. Reba Hedrick wasn’t always looking instead of peeping? 9. Iris Motley couldn’t say, “Ah! Mr. Jones?” 10. Anne Norman couldn’t find a new face to make? 1 1. Elinor Overbey’s favorite boy friend wasn’t “Joe”? 12. Ila Owen spoke in history class? 13. Augusta Anne Parrish lost her temper? 14. Kermit Parrish lost his singing ability? I 3. Clara Powell wasn’t always writing a letter just before a basketball game? 16. Doris Anne Powell got her hair messed up? 1 7. Dottie Rowland’s theme song wasn’t “Oh, Johnnie”? 18. Beulah Shelton fell in love? 19. Landon Shelton’s favorite color wasn’t “Red”? 20. Mary Hyler Sours didn’t walk in her sleep? 21. Barbara Anne Stone didn’t study her lessons? By Reba Hedrick and Mary Sours 17 NAME WHERE FOUND IDEA OF MISERY SAYING Dot Anderson At a basketball game Not having a date Phooey !
