a chandelier hangs overhead, challenged by the sunlit stained glass window; both illuminating the ornate staircase as Past ' s portraits look on . . . a cherub faced fountain serves as foreground for the expansive estate — tell-tale of the once-upon-a-times of long ago . . . a granite-cut lion and his coarse-maned partner, who caretakers of tradition, silently oversee as one passes up the weather-worn steps . . . transcending, the Pittsburgh skyline reaches out — peering forward, through a wooded grove . . .

Edward D. Eddy President of Chatham College from 1960 — 1977 Many of the achievements of the Eddy administration will remain apparent for years to come, while others will be lost in the shuffle of new decisions and new demands. What should not be lost, however, is the example of strength, energy, devotion and integrity that President and Mrs. Eddy have provided in such great abundance. It is the special privilege of the 1977 Cornerstone to express the deepest appreciation to the Eddys for their years of remarkable service and achievement. No Narrow Schoolmaster IN a time of drastically changing atti- tudes on the part of women about their role in life and the schooling need- ed to prepare for it, Dr Edward D Eddy Jr. as president of Chatham College was a pathfinder for changes in women ' s higher education. Now he departs from Pittsburgh after 17 years to become provost of Penn State University He will leave be- hind a solid record not only at Chatham but in such activities as the Pittsburgh Symphony Society board, the board of trustees at WQED and as a sparkplug for the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Educa- tion, which involves all the institutions of higher learning here. Ted Eddy kept Chatham ahead of the pack by making it responsive to what women, and particularly young women, wanted to prepare themselves in a world of much wider choices than once seemed possible. Chatham has managed to create career-oriented courses without watering down its traditional liberal arts emphasis. In short, Dr Eddy has been no nar- row schoolmaster, but an innovative, imaginative educator. We wish him well at Penn State. Pittsburgh f ost-tSazelte
