wmrrrw n I i ' HtMIBtWVUn ' } ' THE PENNSYLVANIAN PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA NTRODUCTION After we, the Senior class of 1 954, leave PCW, there are many things which we will always remember — the beauty of the campus, the close associations with faculty and administration, the traditions of song contest and Christmas dinner. These are but a few of the memories which we will hold. Each class reflects some of our past experiences here at college. In the future we will find within the pages of this book a smal part of our life — that part which we shall call PCW. EDICATION In Miss Laberta Dysart are epitomized the goals and ideals of this college, beauty of character and regard for truth. In her is found a rec- onciliation of the scholarly approach and warm understanding. Miss Dysart ' s dedication to the principles of education, her devotion to the quest for knowledge, and her pursuit of wisdom have left an indelible mark upon the legions of students who have studied with her. To the moulding of our characters and to our pursuit of truth her con- tribution Is immeasurable. It is with deepest gratitude and humility and with profound respect and admiration that we look in retrospect upon our association with Miss Dysart. ENIORS % ' y ■CLASS OF 1954 i Taking our cue from the atmosphere surrounding our matriculation, the class of ' 54 la- bored under the somewhat discomforting but essentially healthy pangs of growing pain. Our development toward maturity was parallel to the continuing growth of the college. We take great pride in this kinship, pride in being a part of, and taking part in so dynamic a process. Despite the feeling of incompletion that pervades the final year, a spirit of de- termination and dedication prevails. We arrived in September of 1950 in a body of 147 — verdancy sheathed in sophistica- tion. Bedinked and saturated with tea, we were welcomed to the college on matriculation day. Orientation solidified us but did not squelch individualism. We studied and lived as a unit, but thought as separate entities. We demonstrated our efforts to the community at large. We ventured into the sports limelight and took the hockey cup. As Woodland Hall acquired a new dining room and sundeck, so our sophomore year inaugurated our status as upperclassmen, and we became cognizant of our responsibility not only to the class but to the college. The Merrie Christmas Balle was our contribution to the year ' s social calendar. We entertained our sister class amid thanks and farewells. Again we won the hockey cup, and in addition, added to our accolades the swimming cup. One half of our college career was culminated in the successful completion of these two years which gave direction to our educational pursuits. We determined our courses of study, stated our majors, and were welcomed to our respective departments via teas, receptions, and picnics. Disrupted classrooms and schedules marked our junior year, but visions of moderniza- tion and improvement precluded discontent. The new gym was completed, and we helped lay the cornerstones of three new buildings. We welcomed Dean Allen and her administra- tion. On the charm of the third try, we won the play contest, with The Collector adding one more trophy to our growing collection. The college masked for our La Balle Masque as once again we gained social prominence. Seniority with its privileges and immunities was fast approaching but with the acceptance of chapel orchestra seats we accepted its responsibilities and duties. We elected able leaders and pledged to them our support. As a gesture of gratitude we gave the seniors an Illumination Dance to be remembered. Our final year marked the institution of Community Government, and our class became the first participating seniors under this form of government. We progressed along aca- demic lines also. Seven of our sch olars took honors and many more appeared on the Dean ' s List. Cooperation won for us the cup for our serious song and honorable mention for performance. Throughout our four years, we have acted not as one but as many. We attained unity early in our career, but unity did not impede personal development. The individual emerged. Yes, a feeling of incompletion does prevail, but this is a healthy corroboration of the true meaning of Commencement. It is a yearbook for each member of the college com- munity. This 1954 Pennsylvanian will always carry the thought of work, cooperation, imagination, and sentiment to those of us who have participated in its publication. The staff of The Pennsylvanian would like to thank those who have done so much for the reali- zation of this book — to Mr. LeClair for his advice and unending moral support, to Keller for their patience and craftsmanship, to Deakin Studios for their out- standing photography, to Bel-Mar Studios for their photography and assistance. I would personally like to express my gratitude to all those members of my staff without whose help this 1954 Pennsylvanian could never have been pre- sented as our contribution to Pennsylvania College for Women. The campus which we as Seniors remember, no longer exists. On May 2, 1 954 the college will hold its dedication Cere- monies of the three new buildings. Many of the com- panies who did so much toward the realization of these new buildings are unable to advertise because of the ethics of their professions. We would however like to acknowleged their very generous contributions to The Pennsylvanian and the contribution which they have made to our new college community.
