' r; THE PENNSYLVANIAN PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA Introduction Since the first time we set foot on P.C.W. ' s campus, its physical assets have been increased. We see it in our Chapel, our dining room, our gym, and in the present construction of the new triangle. But another form of building occurs here that has been in process longer and involves us more directly. In tradition proven by the years, the shaping and the development of many students has added to P.C.W. ' s most valued structures. This book is a visual remembrance of this paralleled construction. Project your days at P.C.W. into these pages — for this is you! Dedication Dignity, restraint, wisdom, and understanding — personified in our veep. No one better symbolizes the contemporary building of PCW than Dr. Thomas H. Hamilton. His devotion to the meaning of an institution and his integrity as an educator have been an inspiration to all who know him. A firm advocate of the open door policy, he has never been too busy to listen to our gripes, problems, or ideas. If we could not find him in his office, he gave us audience during rehearsals, while watching the world series, or between classes in the snack bar, always ready with mature advice and a subtle wit. It is with deepest admiration and respect that we look back on our association with Dr. Hamilton, our teacher, counselor, and friend. M ETA L THE SENIORS 34 SToWE Co«.im(CE the class of ' 53 35 o -.. fl 36 CONSTRUCTION REPORT September 18, 1949 June 8, 1953 The work of our college years has been the placement of the bricks of experience and the mortar of unity into the building of a whole class. Each year adds more until we find a structure, though blemished in spots, containing memories for each one of us. We now sub- mit the final report of the class of ' 53. An ample supply of material was had in ' 49 to begin the building of a class for we were 1 55 strong. YW gave us a tea and our dinks, and we were welcomed at matricula- tion. While being oriented, the theme of unity dominated; and that needed class spirit was born. Alice accepted our colors of red and white, and we were on our own. Christmas vespers officially opened the Chapel, and we were the first class to occupy the freshman section. The cup for the serious song was ours with In the Hills of Pennsylvania. We per- formed the traditional duties of freshmen with May Day baskets, and a minstrel show for freshman entertainment. We moved to the other side of the Chapel with Dr. Wallace as our steady beau. Determined we would have no sophomore slump, we built our structure further with Mac as our leader. Woodland ' s new dining room with a sun deck was added to the campus. With Chapel Bells we took the serious cup for the second time. Thanksgiving left us snowbound, and the Sleigh Belle Ball with our queen was our Christmas present to the school. We spread out into sports and gained the basketball cup. We stated our majors and began to look toward our futures. A picnic and a serenade were our expres- sions of gratitude to our sister class. With Dr. Wallace ' s encouragement the structure was half completed, and we were ready to add another layer. Although the amount of material had been reduced to 96 the desire to build was there. Participation was the key word of the year with Amy giving us the slogan, so much to do, so tittle time. Woodland Annex was finished, and the gym was begun. We not only built to our own structure thdt year, but started our sister class to build theirs with the help of Mac. Amy gave the freshmen their colors, and we took the humorous song cup with Blind Date Blues. For Christmas we had another queen, and some of us were engaged. Spring was welcomed on a planetary note with Half of Heaven. We had our big night, and made it bigger for the seniors by giving them flowers at their last prom. Additional cups ornamented our structure when we again took the basketball cup, and finally won the play contest with The Devil May Care. Some of us were already working on our tutorials and some just deciding. W.S.S.F. gave us a successful project in Basant Panchami. Community government with its pros and cons was brought to our attention, and we started to think of building a new form of government. Elections saw Amy unanirriously SGA pres- ident, and we moved into the last section. Dean Marks, and a part of PCW, moved out with the seniors. There was our first rose-chain, and the dance we gave the seniors. The mortar had set well and the design of the bricks made as we prepared to place the ledge on our wall. L I L 37 After an extended vacation we came back to view the remains of Berry, and the large holes where the new buildings would be. With the addition of the nursing students, we maintained a strength of 96, and established ourselves in Mellon. With Mac leading us, we tried to maintain unity. Some had built further than others, and on our roster six were married. The gym was completed, and we heard the fabulous plans we would never see. We met Dean Allen, and the other new members of the faculty and administration. We got our daily constitutionals walking to classes, and learned how Eskimos feel. Caps and gowns were donned officially for matriculation; and we started to master tutorials and practice teaching, while we were mastered by philosophy. Mock Elections predicted the next president, and the heat of politics faded away. We took the serious cup with PCW Builds, and honorable mention on color day. Hard work was done to establish community government, and the rush was on for the January tutorials. Comprehensives over, we went into our boards with our eye on graduation. Our turn for the annual May Day baskets, and the days shortened. All too soon we had moved out into the wide, wide, world, and left our colors for another class. The senior activities: dinner, dance, breakfast, Rose Chain, and Baccalaureate were there and gone.
