In September 1947, we arrive, a little uneasy, but full of bright plans. We join the long registra- tion line in front of the library and listen to the upperclassmen scream greetings at one another. Somehow we struggle through the language, personality, English, math and vocational tests. Then six weeks of orientation with Fletch. At last we matriculate — despite the rain. Pitt beats Ohio State and invades the campus. We get our first taste of Pittsburgh football victories and Pitt men, enmasse. Fall also brings the Harvest Ball at the Edgewood Country Club. Nanna Moore leads us in the Song Contest but we don ' t quite make it. Gwen Bach receives our colors from Bobby Hanson — the rose and white — ours to keep for four years. Fetal pigs, Carnegie Museum, Phipps Conservatory, and then our first finals. On Valentine ' s Day, the faculty win our hearts with You Can ' t Take It With You. We cop Honorable Mention in the Play Contest with the highly literary Shoot the Skirts to Me, Mother. M. J. scores with her immortal Gotta Get Me a Man. J. Cutler Andrews is elected class advisor. Spring brings the first Arts production, Antigone, presented on Mellon Lawn. Moving-Up Day, and we migrate into the Sophomore Section. A long lazy vacation, and then we ' re back, ignoring the standard sophomore slump, with Seggy as president. Our new veep arrives, Dr. Thomas H. Hamilton. Mock Elections, and all out for the democrats. Election night arrives, and Pfohl as Harry Truman, is kidnapped and tied to Dr. Norman for an hour — faculty student relations were never better. The Dixiecrats win — on the strength of all their mint juleps. The song contest comes up again and we come up with Memories, one that ' s sung a lot and should ' ve won. Fickes initiates the formal eggnog party. Our Candy Cane Cotillion is a whopping success. Peg Barker ' s chairman, Pat Kennedy, Queen. We have our first hike in Activ- ities fee. The Tempest is presented and the Minor Bird takes flight. We rank high in our sopho- more comprehensives. A sophisticated comedy and the play contest cup goes into our loving, out- stretched hands. The end of the year, and we choose our tentative majors. 57 We get a sister class our junior year. G-G ' s our new prexy. Alice Ann dates Peter Lawford and we win the hockey cup. The Arts presents B.O. ( Beggar ' s Opera, suh) and a bawdy time is had by all. We have our first midnight candlelight service in the new chapel. The Aquacade takes us to the Surf Club where many juniors go through their paces, a la Esther Williams. Rose Rhapsody, our Junior Prom, is a lush affair, including eight foot clefs, a trellis, roses and a water fountain. We do a double take on the play contest cup with our underwater fantasy, Fin Fare. The juniors picnic at North Park. Jody leads us to victory in the Song Contest with Harry and Eleanor Balent announcing she ' s Mrs. Young. Shazo is elected SGA president. We take part in the Rose Chain. Summer comes and we make the most of it. Nat Eger becomes Mrs. Novick and Joyce Wilde Mrs. Rownd. The rest of us become disgusted! President Anderson returns from Bermuda and introduces his plaid blazer at a student assembly. Woodland ' s mud hole disappears. The new dining room and parking lot are completely finished. Marlene Shettel Stovicek ' s wedding becomes a class activity at the Cathedral. We come back from Christmas vacation with more diamonds than Carol Channing. Our Veep comes back with a broken leg. Too Many Girls and Vive La Compagnie. Suddenly it ' s spring. Time is divided between sunbathing, bridal showers and studies. Then, unbe- lievable as it see ms, tutorials are in and parties begin. At Moving Up Day, the classes sing Where, Oh Where Are the Grand Old Seniors? and they mean US! The great day arrives and as we walk to the platform, our four years become telescoped. Somehow we forget the work and worry and remem- ber only the fun. The diploma, laughter and tears, dissolving into one another, your family and friends, wishing you good things — and all too soon, it ' s over. Yet in another sense, this is really the beginning. So here we stand — 84 strong — products of the Aspirin Age, adults of the Atomic Age — ready to go out into a mixed up world and do our darnedest. f Vice-President, Pat Nauman; President.
