HITCHING POSTS. . .where the 49-ers stopped and took stock of the situation. . .picked new tools. . .or acknowledged the worth of old ones. As freshmen of 1945-46 they had drifted along Woodland Road, through their classes. . .learning about P.C.W. traditions with Dr. Anderson, the new presi- dent. . .walking to Pete ' s, Sodini ' s, the Drug and East Lib ... knowing the rules, following the older prospectors. They were verdant 49-ers .. .they knew ever} 1 inch of their four year camp site... yet the}- drifted, the four years ahead of them a rocky mountain. . . In 1946-47 it was those things the} ' knew well that changed... a new wing was added to Fickes Hall. . .the Purple Seal moved downstairs into the old locker room... the day students were eating lunch with the dorm stu- dents in Woodland Hall, where there were new tables and chairs, more crowds, and a new dietition, Miss King, to handle them all. There was an unlimited cut system ... another raise in tuition, room and board... a young assistant Dean, Miss Dalzell, with more late permissions and help with activi- ties. The New Curriculum had been launched .. .the 49-ers argued for it; they fought against it, though they were not a required part of it. They tired of drifting. . .like students universally, they griped. .. respecting and loving their college. . .working, writing, meeting to make it the best, small, liberal woman ' s college. . . By their junior year, 1947-48, they were living with more and more girls from out of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania .. .the college was receiving more publicity ... national educators studied the curriculum and the students first- hand. Demands had moved the Purple Seal into the book store... a lodge was on campus for informal parties, classes and dates. . .the Woodland draw- ing room was redecorated and one wall knocked out. . .new furniture was in the Conover Room, in Mellon library. . .new paint made Berry Hall and the chapel more stimulating. . .plans for a chapel, a gym and a dining room were announced. The 49-ers marched into their senior year... the older pros- pectors. . .alert, energetic. . . Sadie was in the Snack Bar, open for quick lunches. . .an assistant dieti- tion handled the dining room. . .the new hockey field was read} ' . . .the chapel was built come snow, rain, cr classes .. .kitchens and more phones were in old Woodland. Students were getting used to signing off and on before and after vacations. . .a vice-president. Dr. Hamilton, offered concrete sugges- tions for a better P.C.YV. There was a five-year music course... a Music Council... an Opera Workshop. .. Kolberg and Stolarevsky from the Pitts- burgh Symphony .. .Whitmer, the white-haired composer, was with the col- lege again. England sent Dr. Chapman and Storm Jameson. . .the frosh wore dinks instead of pins. Fencing and camping were taught... the Ski Club enthusiasts spent weekends at Seven Springs. . .Hockey Play-day and dorm days were added to the A.A. repertoire. There were set penalties for late minutes in House Government. . .a set number of late permissions per class. . .eleven o ' clocks for Sunday nights... one o ' clock for the seniors on Saturday nights. . .cars on campus before spring vacation. An activity file system helped campus leaders. . .cigarettes appeared in some classes and in finals. Those late for dinner sang for their supper... a campus etiquette booklet was published. . .heavy bull sessions about blue jeans came and went. The activities fee rose. . .more, more and more plays were given as the men of the faculty became better actors. . . The 49-ers held on to spirit with picnics and parties at the Fergusons. . . a senior dance at the Roosevelt. . .dinners, Alice in Wonderland, teas. They had Mrs. Alexander, Ellsworth, Snell and Zelt in their classes. . .they sang hallelujah to the Dean. . .they didn ' t win the song contest. Like true 49-ers, they had horses for the Ku Klux Klan demonstration that won Mock Elec- tion. They had built better hitching posts. . .investigating the Honor System, evolving a Judicial Board. . .dividing the old Arrow into a true newspaper and the Minor Bird. . .instituting the system of applying for the editorships of publications .. .disbanding the obsolete permanent nominating committee system for sponsored nominations and platform campaigning. They were ninety-three strong. . .breaking the four-year camp .. .leaving maps behind them. . .riding on toward the gold of life with P.C.W. tools. . . Packing dance programs, books, photo albums and notes . . . jeans, sweaters, formals, and dolls . . . prospecting business suits, aprons, hotels and apartments . . . I ' m Packin ' My Grip . . M Good-bye, Girls, I ' m through . . . with everything but the chore of packing to go home for the Summer. And that would slay me if I didn ' t have my dreams of the lovely, off-this-hemisphere things I saw on a shop- ping trip through Boggs and Buhl, many of which I hope to own before I leave.
