By lighting lamps of thought today For those tomorrow's world shall need Our public schools must lead the way In sowing Freedom's precious seed. In passing on those great ideals - Of justice and equality, The basic goodness that appeals To every youth's integrity. We must make sure when we invest In classrooms that we understand What constitutes the very best' In Education for our land. We must act on the vital truth, That Freedom is essentially The priceless heritage of youth, L AND OUR RESPONSIBUJITY! The School In The Community The school is a community within a community. It is a community of students and teachers cooperating in learning experiences. The heart of cooperation is interest, for this is essential to learning. The school is also society's institution for self perpetuation It is logical then, that the direction of instruction is determined by student interests and the dictates of society, the larger community. I Schooling is both preparation for life and life itself. The school's curriculum is as X broad as the total range of life. It is related to life's problems and expectations. It is the school's reponsibility to consider all aspects of man's experiences. The basic skills as reading, writing, and computation arehmastered in the elementary and intermediate grades. Preparation for sensitive citizenship and a place in the work world is made in the upper grades. The school does not moralize. Its function is not to say that this action is right or wrong. It does insist, however, that one' first examine the consequence and then pursue the action this demands. Go and do by direction and purposeg not by default and by chance. The school uses this method because it believes this is the way that truth for the individual can best be realized. What is true and good for the individual remains such for the community because the community is individuals in mass. They were starting their first year of formal education under the guidance of Mrs. Clady. New habits and friends were made as well as learning the ABC's. The first of their class parties was at Hallow- een when the students made their own masks. At Christmas the entire group helped in creating decorations ior an unusual seasonal tree. Hand- icraft was again shown when valentines were made for a gay valentine party. The 100 Club was an unique attraction of the year. A bulletin board display illustrated each pupil's ability to count and write to one hundred, an accomplishment necessary to become a full- fledged member of the club. The first grade made two public appearances during the year, The first was at a P, T.A. program when choral verses were recited. Later they participated in the grade operetta by playing in the rhythm band. Grade Two The second grade has the distinction of being the largest class in the school this year. At one time the enrollment reached twenty-nine but was dropped to twenty-five with the withdrawal of four students. Mrs. Phelan is the teacher of this fine group. Their first stage appearance of the year was made when the class took part in the Thanks- giving entertainment for the P. T. A. Colorful crayon and water color drawings were made by these students and were sent to children of foreign lands through the Art for World Friendship Committee. Equally beautiful and interesting pictures were received in exchange. Parties were also a part of the year's activi- ties taking place at Halloween. Besides holiday parties at Halloween, Christmas and Valentines day, they had one other important highlight which will be remembered. At, the November P. WE CAN DREAM. CAN'T WE? FASHION LEAVES My W GALS GUYS IN OUT LAUGHS SIGHS The Last Word After many busy nights of work in the home ec. room, the 1957 TIGER STRIPE has been completed. All is now quiet about me. The typewriter clicking, friendly laughter, and the buzz of working people are silenced. A glance about the room brings back many thoughts and memories. The waste paper basket has possession of many blown flash bulbs, photo scraps, and exposed paper which bear evidence of the work of the photographers. Pens, India ink, and rulers are the sign of the artist's desk while a sticky table and snips of paper mark the way of those who labored long hours on layouts. The copywriters have left an array of write-ups along with inquiry letters to the alumni. A neat stack of receipts tell of the work in- volved in managing the finances. Of course, we find a little of everything on Mrs. Durbin's desk whose guidance, initiative, and assistance have been priceless. Humorous incidents come to mind such as eating cheese and crackers, drinking tea, enjoying Jim Kalb's calypso serenades, and losing the freshman class. Now the last write-up has been written, the last picture developed, and the last page planned and pasted. The only job now remaining is to clear my desk and make room for next year's editor. No longer will there be sleepless nights and sleepy classes. Once again assignments will be completed and free evenings enjoyed. Through our work, we have known the birth of this book, its development, and now its conclusion. We have worked so diligently on this project that we have come to feel it is OUR book. Our book because we have created it. But this is not true. It is YOUR book-. a book created and designed especially for you. It is a book of YOUR school, My school, OUR school ............... least we forget. EDITOR Wadi 52.4-10 4-.
