Hlstory Class of 55 History We were a happy care free group of l1ttle s1x year olds, that entered Chatfleld school September 7 1943 Mrs Audrey Lug1nbuhl soon made us feel at home Mr Lloyd Volk was the superlnterldeflt, at the tune Mrs L1etzy mstructed us the second semester of our f1rst year 1n school In the second grade Mrs Leltzy, taught us our three R s Our thlrd and also our fourth grade teacher was Mrs Ethel Morton Mr Penn was then superxntendent In our f1fth and S1Xth year of school we had Mrs W1lma Wal1m1re Mr Taylor be1ng Superlntendent In the seventh grade we had qu1te a changmg routme For each subJect we had to go to d1fferent room and had a dxfferent teacher For the f1rst t1rne we elected off1cers for our class They were Pres Donald Kalb V Pres Anne Blackford Sec y Kenneth Tobln Treas Roger Long News Reporter, Joyce Zucker and Student Counc1l Carl Kalb Our adv1sor was Mxss Sm1th QMrs We1senauerl We gave a Chr1stmas party for the e1ghth grade Robert Slater gave a hallowe'en party for the class We gave a m1nstrel show for our assembly and the Chr1stma. chapel Off1cers for our e1ghth year were Pres Anne Blackford V Pres Carl Kalb Sec y Donald Auck Treas Lyle Shock NewsReporter, Mary Schanzenbach and St Councll Robert Slater Mxss Sm1th was our adv1sor We gave the hallowe'en party for the seventh grade The class held a Chrlstmas party at Robert Slater's and went carol1ng For our sembly we gave a 'Gay N1net1es Revue In our f1rst year of h1gh school we elected Carl Kalb Pres Anne Blackford V Pres Lyle Shock, Treas Donald Auck, Sec'y Joyce Zucker Student Counc1l and Mrs Eula Brown was our advlsor We gave the Sen1or farewell party The theme was western so 1t was called ' The Last Roundup Off1cers for our sophomore year were Pres Donald Kalb V Pres Joyce Zucker Treas Lyle Shock Sec'y Donald Auck' Student Counc1l Robert Slater Mr McCullough was our sponsor Mr Overholser was now our supemntendent We gave a Hobo Party for the h1gh school ln the sprlng Mrs Durb1n was our sponsor our Jumor and Sen1or years We gave the h1gh school Chr1stmas party w1th Santa as the honored guest On Apr1l 24 we sponsored the Jr and Sr Banquet at the Hotel Re1ger 1n Sandusky carry1ng out the theme of the famous Stork Clu of New York C1ty Off1cers for that year were Pres Anne Blackford V Pres , Donald Kalb Sec'y Joyce Zucker Treas Lyle Shock Student Counc1l Robert Slater We also gave the Jun1or play Here Comes Charl1e d1rected by Mrs Eula Brown We l1ttle knew how much work lt was go1ng to take to graduate when we entered our Sen1or Year Mr B1ggS was our new super1ntendent Elect1on of off1cers came f1rst They were Pres , Joyce Zucker V Pres Donald Kalb Sec y Anne Blackford Treas Zoa E1cher Student Counc1l Lyle Shock News Reporter,Mary Schanzenbach Mary was later elected as Sec'y when Anne Blackford w1thdrew We gave the freshmen a grand welcome the n1ght of the 1n1t1at1on party We hope they w1ll forg1ve us We sponsored a scrap dr1ve at the beg1nn1ng of the school year and a bake sale 1n the spr1ng Our class play was Nearly S1xteen d1rected by Mr Eugene Trumbull Our Class colors were Blue and Sllver the flower was the red carnat1on, and our motto was Learn to L1ve L1ve to Learn' Rev Shank, was speaker at Baccalaureate May 22 and Dr Harold Yochum was speaker at our Commencement exerc1ses May 24 The Jumors enterta1ned us at a beaut1ful banquet held at the Y M C A 1n Mar1on Oh1o The program and decorat1ons carrxed out the theme, 'South of the Border C11max1ng the f1n1sh of our h1gh school hfe the class then Went on a tr1p to Washmgton D C and New York C1ty Joyce Zucker Class H1stor1an 2.4 o 9 Q IDBI I 1111 I , . . . . . Llass Prophecy New York C1ty New York July 14 1965 Dear Mr s Durb1n S1nce we after the past ten eventful years f1nd ourselves at the two extremes of our country New York and Cahforma I should l1ke to tell you about the place of common 1n terest to both of us Chatf1e1d Oh1o On June Z8 I started my vacat1on and dec1ded that th1s year I would go back to dear old Chatf1eld I am very sorry I d1d not get the chance to see you but very happy you had the opportumty to go to Cahforma to make a f1lm on Cook1ng To day for one of the studlos I left New York on a plane at 7 30 A M and got to the new Chatf1eld Axrport before 9 00 I 1mmed1ately went to the nearest hotel whxch had a s1gn 1n front say1ng SHOCK HOTEL, and be11eve me rt was a shock to und lt was Lyle who owned the beaut1ful establlshment After talk1ng w1th h1m for a wh1le he told me he was marr1ed and that he and h1s lovely w1fe Ruth had two daughters It so happened that th1s week there was a celebratlon 1n Chatf1e1d due to the 5th annlver sary of the new Mult1m11l1on Dollar Atomlc Energy Plant I went to the new factory and Just as I was about to walk IH a guard stopped me He was none other than R1chard Schanzenbach After talkrng for a wh1le w1th Toots he told me It was useless to try to get ln but lt mxght be 1nterest1ng to see the new school At the school I found there were many changes 1nc1ud1ng the teach1ng staff M1ss Mary a second Mary told me that 1n her class she had ch1ldren wlth the name of Kalb Shock Tob1n, Rossman and Auck Wrth the help of Mary I was soon on the way to see the parents of these puplls At the Auck farm I met Mrs Auck and Donme showed me all of the new equ1pment and bulldxngs he had It seemed he made h1s money 1n the Chatf1eld Axrport and farm1ng was Just a hobby Later 1n the evemng I dec1ded to go to a restaurant and s1nce The Hlgh Hat was owned by Donnle and Anne Kalb lt seemed to be the place where I should go After secur1ng a r1ng s1de table w1th Donnle and Anne we talked for hours It seemed they bu11t th1s D1n1ng Room whlch hal occome a good 1nve stment The dxnner was planned by the famous d1et1t1an and hostess La Zoa' wh1ch meant noth1ng to me unt1l t was ' La Zoa Elcher' After work Zoa came out and talked vtrth us for a whxle and told me she owed her success to none other than you, Mrs Durb1n The ma1n event for the next day was a breath tak1ng hot rod race It was a thrzllrng e vent from start to f1n1sh wrth the wmnner agam belng our own Toby Raclng was a s1de hne for Toby s1nce he had a large Shell Statlon rn the mam part of town That evemng I stopped at the Shell Statron to talk to Kenneth and congratulate h1m H surpr1sed me by telllng me B111 Leuthold was work1ng for h1m B111 also had done some raclng but gave up because of Toby's compet1t1on Z5 'I .
