In our annual this year we were thinking of school life as compared to a farm. Seeds of knowledge are sawed in school, and with proper cultivation, sun- light, rain, and food for thought, they grow to produce a good harvest just as corn planted in the field. D,lCATl Mrs, Emma Beal We, the Seniors of '54, wish to dedicate this annual to Mrs. Emma Beal, who was with us every school day except one for the past nine years. We thrived well, as you can see, on her culinary art. She is to be commended for her personal in- terest in the economy and welfare of the cafeteria. 5 qc: 'fx ChatHeld High School Board of Education Freeman Hanes, Richard Feichtner, Chester Gottfried, Harley Kalb, Arthur Loyer, and Russell May. Miss Heinlen, our teacher, brought us, who were destined to become the Class of '54, through our first year of school. Our second year of school was much better than the first, we knew our way around the build- ing and knew each other fairly well. Our new teacher, Miss Green, taught us during our second and third year. By our third year, we thought we were really getting up there fast. This was our third new room. During our fourth year we enjoyed parties during school. Mrs. Morton was our teacher. We had never been upstairs, so when we got to be fifth and sixth graders, our wish came true. For our last years in grade school our teacher was Mrs. Walimire. Here we were with half of our education completed. Already we were in Junior High or seven- th grade. Going from one room to another, we didn't know whether we could remember from one day to the next where we belonged, but we soon became adjusted. At the beginning of our eighth grade, we elected officers which were as follows: Pres. , Kenneth Clady, V. Pres., Marcia Zucker, Sec'y., Joanna Beal, Treas., Faye Ostermyer, Student Council, Zona Eicher, News Reporter, Rosalie Kalb, and class sponsor, Mrs. Dale Meffley. During the year, we enjoyed a Hallowe'en party. We sponsored a chapel and an assembly. Our first year in high school was something new for us. Our initiation, by the way, we all lived through it, was really something to remember. We elected officers as follows: Pres. , Gerald Kreim, V. Pres., Faye Ostermyer, Sec'y., Kenneth Clady, Treas. , Zona Eicher, Student Council, Marilyn Schifer, News Reporter, Marcia Zucker, and class sponsor was Mr. Donald Gilbert. We presented an assembly and a chapel. We gave a farewell party for the seniors at the end of the year. ln our sophomore year we elected the following officers: Pres. , Kenneth Clady, V. Pres. , Marcia Zucker, Sec'y., Marilyn Schifer, Treas., Miriam Gerhart, Student Council, Dorothy Siesel, News Reporter, Rosalie Kalb, and Mr. Jordan was our sporsor. We gave an assembly in February and later a St. Patrick's Day party. We gave a short play entitled, Paul Wrecks the Car , under the direction of Mrs. Brown. We also aided the Seniors with their festival. As juniors we gave our first play, Take Your Medicine , directed by Mrs. Brown. The officers were elected as follows: Pres. , Marcia Zucker, V. Pres., Miriam Gerhart, Sec'y. , Marilyn Schifer Treas., Kenneth Clady, News Reporter, Joanna Beal, Student Council, Rosalie Kalb. Mrs. Durbin our class sponsor, helped us in planning our Junior-Senior Banquet held at the Civic Nic-Nac at Fostoria. The theme was April Showers . ln 1953, we began our last year of school. Sixteen members add up the total left since twelve years ago. At the beginning of the year we elected officers as follows: Pres. , Kenneth Clady, V. Pres. , Gerald Kreim, Sec'y., Dorothy Siesel, Treas., ldonna Lutz, Student Council, Marilyn Schifer, lxbws Reporter, Faye Ostermyer, and sponsor, Mr. Jordan. We had the enjoyment of initiating the Freshmen this year. For our Senior play we selected Grandma's Best Years , which was directed by Mrs. Brown. For the banquet, the Juniors took us to Sandusky to the Rieger l'lotel. The theme wcs The Stork CIub . For our class trip, we decided to go to New York City. We selected our gowns, name cards, and invitations at the beginning of the year. Our class colors are blue and white, class flower, red rose, and our motto is Always Aim High . Baccalaureate and Commencement were held on May 23 and 24, 1954, respectively. .loanna Beal Class Historian 24 Senior Class Prophecy My name is Dorothy Siesel. I'm special consultant to the I954 graduating class. The Chatfield High School building was burnedl All records were burnedl They must be replaced. VWII I be able to complete them correctly? Wait ------------- in SUSpenseI I awoke at 7 a.m. as usual on May l3, I964, and began preparing breakfcst when a knock sounded at the door. Answering it, I was startled to see policeman Kenneth Kalb looking very serious. Ken said, Have you heard of the fire at the Chatfield School? I answered, Yes. He said, All records must be replaced in a very short time. Go and visit all classmates and get the information necessary to make new records. Time: May I4, moming. I began my trip. Driving through Mansfield, Ohio, l read a sign, Marcia's Beauty Shoppe . Marcia Zucker had married Clem Studer and besides raising a cute daughter, she was running a beauty parlor. Marcia csked me to stay for dinner but I had no time to waste. Time :May l4,noon. I now headed for Cleveland, Giio. Stopping at a restaurant to eat, l learned that there was a very large airplane plant a few miles north. I saw it said, Jake 's Airplane Service . I stopped to get the infomation from Jake , Gerald Kreim. Jake said he wcs sorry to hear of the misfortune but wished it would have happened when he was in school. Thanking Jake for the information he gave me, I hurried to the Cleveland airport to take a plane for New York. Time: May I4, evening. Hurriedly I climbed aboard the plane. To attend to my comfort on the plane was Dolores Stein who had taken the job as airline stewardess for her career. Dolores was very busy but found time to give amwers to my questions. Time: May l5, morning. lspent the morning watching a practice basketball game in which Vic Wurm participated. Vic was our former all star basketball player. He is now playing with the New York Knickerbockersn. His average is l53 points a game. So far Vic is still a bache- lor but he hopes to find that certain girl. I must now catch a plane for Florida. Time: May I6, morning. larrived at the Gene Gebhart's Orange Grove . Mrs. Gebhart is the fonner Marilyn Schifer. Marilyn has been married nine years and from seeing her five children could tell she made a splendid mother. From Marilyn l learned that George was run- ning a television station in Central America. So there is where I went next. Time: May I6, noon. I arrived at Georg geek T.V. station. It was very interesting to look through the station. I was glad to learn of the success he made. Time: May I6, evening. After arriving in Hollywood, the land of movie stars, I learned Miriam Gerhart was starring in the picture, A Girl Without a Man . I iust had to see the picture. I wouldn't have missed it, even though I had to stand through the whole performance. Time: May I7, morning. I entered the office of a very large college and asked to see the lady professor of chemistry, Zona Eicher. It was great fun to talk with Zona but not about chemistry because I was lost in that subject. Ohl I almost forgot Rosal ie, see her next. Time: May I7, evening. Visiting a small island in the Pacific I found Miss Rosalie Kalb entertaining the soldiers by her songs. She surely is making good use of her voice. Time: May I8, morning. I stopped at Columbus to visit the huge building of Idonna's Art Shop . This building was worthwhile visiting. Idonna Lutz has the largest collection and most successful art gallery in the world. And to my surprise Joanna Beal was in the main office as a private secretary. Joanna made an attractive looking secretary. Time: May I8, noon. My travel was nearing the end. Today I visited Kenneth Clady at the Columbus Zoo. While walking through the zoo, I noticed the lions. Here I found Kenny training the lions. He said he enioyed the work, although today Kenny is minus one ear, one hand, and three toes. As lsaid good-bye to Kenny, l saw Mr. and Mrs. Jordan enioying the day at the zoo. Nr. Jordan was our reliable sponsor who led us through the senior year. Time: May I8, evening. While going through Bucyrus, I saw Robert Leonhart bossing a group of men. I stopped to talk to Robert and learned that he was the manager ofa group of painters and said he was enioying the work, especially the part of bossing , Time: May I9, moming. I am now in Chatfield, Ohio. The place where the school once stood is now sad looking. Men are working to clean up the ruins. To finish my trip I attended the wedding of Miss Faye Ostermgr and Paul Kanney. Time :May I9, noon. With the infomation for the records in a sealed envelope, I delivered them safely to the Supt. I an glad everyone cooperated with me and I never will forget this trip. Chatfield is an in- corporated village located on State Route 4, seventy miles north of the state capitol , Columbus. and forty miles south of Sandusky, which is located on the shores of Lake Erie. State Route 4 through Chatfield is a part of the Columbus-Sandusky Turnpike, which was finished in l834 and afforded a good outlet for produce for the early settlers, and it is also called the Scioto Trail. Chatfield lies IO miles north of the county seat, Bucyrus, through which the Lincoln Highway, U. S. Route ff30, passes and 8 miles south of Attica, through which goes the Ben Franklin Highway, U. S. Route 5224. The village now has 215 residents. Chatfield, Ohio, was laid out by Nathan Rich in May, 1840, under the name of Richville, but this was later changed to the present name Chatfield in honor of Silas and Oliver Chatfield, who were among the first settlers. Chatfield Township, in which the village is located, was or- ganized Mzrch 6, l828, by the Crawford County Commissioners. The first settlers in this community were German emigrants. The American Lutheran Church, the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and the Evangelical Pietist Church have congregations in Chatfield. The surface of the land around Chatfield is generally level, and the soil is a rich vegetable loam making agriculture the chief occupation. Corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, and hay are the main crops, and hogs, cattle, sheep, and poultry are raised. Buried in Chatfield Lutheran cemetery are the grandparents of President William McKinley, Mr. and Mrs. David McKinley. 70 1 Speck upl 1 4 1 P E E a .
