Getting off to a slow start, Chatfield came back to make a very good showing in the last half of the season. In the subdistrict tournament, C. H. S. drew Harmony to which they lost 25-23. Harmony went on to win third place in the district. Future prospects were made bright by a second team that won seven of the last eight games. BASKETBALL RECORD C-H-S OPD0l19Ht C.H.S. Baier, Olson, Goldsmith Brown ' I Coach Ralph Spencer worked miracles with a group of light, inexperienced boys in developing them into a well-balanced team. Although outplaying Lanesboro in the opening game of the season, the Gophers lost by a score of 6-0. Bouncing back, they crushed Spring Grove 26-0 in a glorious Home- coming iinish. Sparked by two interceptedfpasses in the last quarter, the Gophers took another Homecoming cel- ebration at Plainview, 12-0. The next game proved to be a heart-breaker at Preston, when the boys lost to the district champs, 7-6. They finished district play by downing Rushford 7-6 and Harmony 20-0. Because of a hard-fighting team and an aerial combination of Colquhoun and Grim that clicked consistently, and Captain Ray Waller's all-'round play, Chatfield closed the season with a well-earned triumph over Stewartville, 12-7. The annual Armistice Day game with St. Charles was postponed be- cause of a severe blizzard. In the whole season, The Gophers counted 83 points to the opponents' 26. Letter winners were: Seniors-Ray Waller, Ian Colquhoun, Stanley Manahan, Bernard Canney, Maro Evans, George Schenmerhorn, Ralph Thorson, Burton McBroom, Warren Brown, and Robert Lam- pe. Underclassmen-George Grim, Paul Gehrke, Robert Amundson, Jim Lynch, John Sisson, LeRoy Haagenson, Owen Paulsen, Claire Bennett, John Laivell, Myron Olson, and Manager Billy Connelly.

The next two games proved to be the downfall as both games were lost. Wykofl' won by a 13 to 8 decision and Preston 10 to 9. This ended a successful season which had a 50-50 average.
