‘TVe 76cut£ tyocc As the pictures to the right prove, the personality of Chase City High School has never depended on its outward appear- ance. It doesn’t rely on the fact that lessons were studied and learned in a two-story wooden frame structure, like the ele- mentary school which was built across from the Baptist Church in the 1880 ' s, --or that we went to classes in a more modern Above, right: The South Side three-story red brick building like the one we are graduating Academy, from this year. We are an old school, and the behavior and thoughts of thous- ands of people during the past seventy-five years have molded us into our present day selves. Faculties, students, parents, and interested townspeople have all contributed to this com- posite. Below, right: The second high school building. For this reason, your yearbook staff feels that it would be im- possible to select one person for this important dedication of our last Chase City High School Annual. We feel a gratitude to so many people. Our high school started as a private school about 1889 and was known as the Southside Female Institute. The name was later changed to the South Side Academy. This school, which was located on the comer of Boyd Street and Academy Lane, was owned and operated by the Baptist Church. It was abandoned and sold around 1904, the proceeds going to the University of Richmond. Below: The main part of our present building which was known as the Chase City District School. It is pictured in a 1908-09 brochure. The second high school building was located across from Bratton ' s Implement Company. According to the picture to the right, apparently at least one student came to school on horse back. The main structure of our present brick building was constructed about 1907, and the first class graduated in 1909. We want to dedicate this last yearbook to the School Boards and Faculties who have planned our curriculums and par- ticipated in our activities, to parents (some who live on farms and have never been inside the school) who have sent more than their children to school, and to students whose personalities make each yea r different from the last. We are grateful to all of these. We thank you.
