It doesn’t rely on the fact that lessons were studied and learned in a two-story wooden frame structure, like the ele- mentary school which was built across from the Baptist Church in the 1880 ' s, --or that we went to classes in a more modern Above, right: The South Side three-story red brick building like the one we are graduating Academy, from this year. We are an old school, and the behavior and thoughts of thous- ands of people during the past seventy-five years have molded us into our present day selves. Faculties, students, parents, and interested townspeople have all contributed to this com- posite. Below, right: The second high school building. For this reason, your yearbook staff feels that it would be im- possible to select one person for this important dedication of our last Chase City High School Annual. We feel a gratitude to so many people. Our high school started as a private school about 1889 and was known as the Southside Female Institute. The name was later changed to the South Side Academy. This school, which was located on the comer of Boyd Street and Academy Lane, was owned and operated by the Baptist Church. It was abandoned and sold around 1904, the proceeds going to the University of Richmond. Below: The main part of our present building which was known as the Chase City District School. It is pictured in a 1908-09 brochure. The second high school building was located across from Bratton ' s Implement Company. According to the picture to the right, apparently at least one student came to school on horse back. The main structure of our present brick building was constructed about 1907, and the first class graduated in 1909. We want to dedicate this last yearbook to the School Boards and Faculties who have planned our curriculums and par- ticipated in our activities, to parents (some who live on farms and have never been inside the school) who have sent more than their children to school, and to students whose personalities make each yea r different from the last. We are grateful to all of these. We thank you. tyou may ' i Hem e ' i Ci6e . . . Right: Discussing weekend plans , the quiz we had last period, or what to do after graduation. Whether Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, we were students of Chase City High School, --a group of teen-agers who met together five days a week from 8:40 in the morning until 3:20 in the afternoon. We argued about clean-up problems around the school grounds--but we cheered together for the same football team. The Seniors felt superior and looked down upon the Juniors who looked down upon the Sophomores who looked down upon the Freshmen. And the lowly Freshmen simpled looked over the hill to the elementary school. But we all kept our eyes on a single goal when it was necessary. As one large student body we could cooperate and work as one unit. We did feel closest to our own class--but we never forgot that it was only part of the whole--Chase City High School. The Juniors and Seniors start back over the hill after a Friday Chapel program. The Freshmen and Sophomores follow after. fcayea teCC at, ' ie Pte K e ' i t£e C z4t cfecL% o£ (? uZ4e 0 rtycy i School 0 0 0 ‘Pin tto. In the fall of 1951, seventy-four students began the long journey through high school as Freshmen. Miss Eloise Wilsher, and Miss BeBe Neal were chosen to guide us and keep us from straying from our path. Rose Dalton was elected president, Jane Wilkerson, vice-president; Carolyn Johnson, secretary; and Vincent Sandy, treasurer. Joe Smith and Randall Black represented us in the Student Council. Ready to resume our studies, we returned in September 1952, after a summer ' s rest. Mrs. Hilda Collins and Miss Elva Kibler became our sponsors. Rose Dalton was again elected president, Vincent Sandy, vice-president; Joyce Jones, sec- retary; Joyce Black, treasurer; and Sylvia Wilmoth, reporter. Sylvia Bivens, Joyce Black, and Joe Smith were elected to represent us in the S. C. A. Our class now was reduced to fifty-six members. Our main project was a sweet sale. Realizing we had a big year ahead of us, we came back to school in September 1953 as Juniors. With this thought in mind we chose the following officers: Jerry Jones, president; Mary Ann Blankenship, vice-president; Sylvia Wilmoth, secretary; and Randall Black, treasurer. To represent us in the Student Council we chose Joyce Black, Mary Ellen Kilgore, Jane Owen, and Jerry Jones. As a result of the sale of Memory Books we proved our able salesmanship. One of our other projects was the Popularity Contest. In March the long-awaited Junior-Senior Prom was held. The hall was decorated with blue streamers and silver stars to carry out the theme, Dancing in the Dark. We also had the thrill of choosing our class rings. We assembled for our final year in the fall of 1954. Jane Owen, president; Jerry Jones, vice-president; Julia Lindholm, secretary; Mary Ellen Kilgore, treasurer; and Mary Ann Blankenship, reporter; made up the roster for the class officers of our last year. The Seniors were represented on the Student Council by Jerry Jones, president of the Council; Joyce Black, vice-president; Mary Ellen Kilgore, Jane Owen and Mary Blankenship. In November, under the direction of Mr. Harvey Jeffreys and Miss Elva Kibler, we presented BEST FOOT FORWARD, a comedy. Twirp Season was one of our main money-making projects for the year. Although each goes his own way, we will remember life at C. C. H. S. Remember Highlights coming out every two weeks? Well, we tried to get it out on time! We hoped to capture the current high school news and publish for you a paper that was both informative and fun to read. It was our idea to cover various student activities as they happened, to review the current movies at our local theater, and to keep up-to-date on the switches in couple combinations - -in our gossip column. They patted us on our heads when we were little, and ever since we started getting our allowances, and earning our own money from pan-time jobs, we have dealt with them. They have always supported us. The following pages are proof of their present interest. I (? Z4e gcty ' Defr nfatettt Stone Ellen Ldpsitz makes a sale to another high school student.
