One cannot say that the Class of 48 appeared to be green when entering Chase City High School in 1944. A sickly shade of chartreuse would more accurately describe the group. Introduction into the clubs and attending school parties stand out almost as vividly as the big problem for most of the class—general math. Despite our complaints about running up and down stairs to change classes and participat¬ ing in physical education, we loved being C. C. H. S. students and became loyal to the school. Studies became progressively unimportant to us in the sophomore year. Noth¬ ing seemed to worry us, except maybe a few crushes. This carefree attitude was not entirely without penalties, for little letters, like C and D, came to be more familiar on report cards than the first three letters of the alphabet. Deten¬ tion hall, and not “Doc’s” saw more of the sophs. Football, indeed, is important in the story of our last year. The pep rallies, the games, the victories, the defeats drew us in closer comradeship. We fairly burst with pride when Chase City won the County Championship, and we celebrated with a really de luxe banquet. Selecting the class play, getting credits straight, and finally planning the graduation exercises followed close the “Big Snow” when the yard of the R. E. Lee School was the best sleighing ground in town. What with English literature and chemistry experiments June, 1948, seemed a not unwelcome date, but as the months went by there was the constant reminder that this was the last time we would be together—this was the end of our high school days. We feel that Chase City High School has given us various gifts—maturity, self-respect, self-reliance, discrimination, and the knowledge of what may be accomplished through cooperation.
