Once again I was with my sixty-seven bewidlered classmates that fateful day in September, 1943, when we began our high school years. Our home room teachers, Mrs. Garland Owen and Mrs. Elizabeth Eubank did their best to get us all straightened out. Our freshman subjects included English, algebra, Latin, home economics, general science, agricul- ture, civics, and general math. We pre- tended indignation but were really thrilled when the seniors declared a Rat Day and made us wear our clothes backward. The boys had to don rouge and lipstick whereas I he girls were deprived of all make-up and had to wear pigtails. Our freshman year passed, and we were soon feeling right at home in the sophomore room. Most of our class came back to take up their studies, though some had to give up school at C.C.H.S. We began to feel fami- liar with our surroundings and accustomed to all the mysteries of high school life. Bi- ology was added to our list of bewildering subjects, and “joy of joys,” we were al- lowed to be in the minstrel. Our junior year went by fast and fur- iously. The new cafeteria was built and I he mad dash for lunch was the subject of many arguments. The seventh grade va- cated its room in the high school building and the seniors reluctantly moved across the hall. The “old cafeteria” became the scene of many night parties sponsored bv tbe student council or the clubs, and by day it served as a projection room, where the American history classes watched the pilgrims fight the Indians and Columbus discover America all over again. French was added to tbe school curriculum, with four boys and four girls in our class brave- ly struggling with the unknown tongue. Of that original eight only five survived to take it again this year. Dorothy Higgens’ marriage w r as the surprise of the year, with Kathleen Whitener’s engagement running a close second. We revived an old tradition and pub- lished a school annual for the first time in seven years under the able direction and assistance of Mrs. Garland Owen and Mrs. H. M. Collins. Our junior-senior party at the Legion Hall w 7 as a huge success, despite the fact that the confetti we ordered didn’t come at all. Toward the end of the year there were so many things happening — exams and practicing for our part in the graduation ceremonies, climaxed by our junior president Richard Fitz accepting the lighted candle from Lacy Jeffreys, senior executive. But here w ' e are today — seniors — and looking back over our achievements of the past four years, we find ourselves re- lieved that so much is behind us, yet reluc- tant to leave. There remain only forty- two of the original sixty-seven in our class. Examinations caught some of us off guard. Latin and algebra did their best to subdue us, and many class-mates have deserted us for other institutions of learning. Each year our class enrollment has decreased, but since it is quality and not quantity that counts, those in authority will agree that our class record has been very satisfactory, it seemed so to me in the mythical mirror. [ 34 ] Class Prophecy While the historian looked into the past, I lifted the other mirror and saw — the Future. My first glimpse showed Norman Wagstaff, county agent, conferring with John Boldin, one of the county ' s most successful farmers. Into Norman’s office walked Martin Car- ter, county veterinarian. As I peered closer, I saw neon lights blinking around a sign above the door of a tea room; on the window was Christine Hoyle ' s name. Apparently it was a very successful tea room. Inside at a little corner table were Rebecca Ellington, owner of an exclusive beauty salon, and Martha Wallace, feature star of the Junior Rockettes, discussing Martha ' s hair-do for her next show. A vision of soda fountains, owned and run by Thomas Harris who has a special sideline of training soda-jerks, gave the impression of prosperity. Zooming over in a private passenger plane aviatrix Alice McPeters, with her skyline hostess, Sara Lee Lawson, gaily waved at me. With his own creation. Grandpa Gilhooley, there was J. B Wilson, the nation ' s greatest ventriloquist. In our old home town, I spied Red-top Cabs speeding along. This, the largest cab service in town, is owned and managed by Charles Duckworth. Charles Beckett had become chief of staff of Johns Hopkins with Lucy Wagstaff as combination secretary and social worker. Mildred Wilde I saw as a blues singer on a program presented by a firm selling ducks, of which Sylvis Byrd is the secretary. Coming into view was Leslie Newton carrying the ball. He made a touchdown which ended the game making his team, the Toonerville Tots, the nation’s champions. Lilly Jones, a department store executive, was conferring with commercial artist, Mar- garet Roberts, whom we had always expected to see advance far. Over the radio in the living room of the home of Jean Wilkerson, a happily married housewife, I heard the voice of Mildred Albright, first soprano for the Simpkinsville Singers, broadcasting over station SWOON. Nearby on a table lay a book, A Laugh a Pay,” by Bertie Sue Lenhart. Carrie Leigh Bigger, our softball enthusiast, I saw preparing to throw the ball. I stepped back to keep it from breaking the mirror. Carlton Matthews looked very happy and prosperous as the owner of the Matthews Manufacturing Company. Doris Lenhart, Broadway star in “Strawberry Blonde,” and Powers model Nellie Mull were downing pancakes in the “Pancake Shop, owned by Dwight Owen, who in white coat and chef’s hat I saw gaily flipping cakes in the show window. Operator of a small beauty shop. Ruby Guthrie was seen discussing the latest news with Drene Shampoo model Edna Moore. With her was Nancy Stembridge, who was so busy trying to keep her date book out of a tangle that she had forgotten the facial she was giving. Edwin McPeters, United States Admiral, was just going into Billy Johnson ' s haber- dashery to get one last look at the civilian clothes. Helen Estes, star prominent in “My Old Home Town,” I glimpsed with Elsie Gurley, insurance agent for the American Life Insurance Corporation. Myrtle Wilson looked most efficient as the private secretary for swooner-crooner Rich- ard Fitz. Dewey Smith was delivering his best sermon to his most attentive audience. Just then Marjorie Thompson, advanced buyer for Rose’s, walked down the street to meet Joyce Driggs, dean of women for the Darlington Dormitories. Billy Duckworth, operator of a Punch and Judy show, and Rudolph Gurley, manager of a Pender ' s Store, were discussing the latest news in such loud voices that the mirror cracked like that of the Lady of Shalott and the Future was to be seen no more. Quoth the Raven, Nevermore. 1 35 | CHASE CITY DEPARTMENT STORE Congratulations and Best of Luck The Chase City Department Store Mecklenburg’s Largest and Most Complete Department Store Chase City, Virginia Congratulations and Best Wishes ♦.« M .♦ V V to the Class of 1947 PRUDEN ' S Chase City, Va. t “ The Leading Store ” RUSSELL SERVICE STATION Junction 58 and 15 Highways Under Original Service t “Where old friends and new ineel for a bite to eat And quaff their ale While telling a tall tale ” L37 I L.
