A CV Schools Closed Durirt Gos Shortage Chartiers Valley School District has closed four buildings due to a curtailment in gas allottrnent and put stu- dents in kindergarten through sixth grade on new schedules. I see belowl. Middle and Senior High School students continue on a regular schedule which includes cafe- teria service. Those in first through sixth grades attend classes three and one-half hours tially, beginning last Tuesday at least through March ll. There is no cafeteria service in the elementary schools. Kindergarten students, some of whom are renssignedto other buildings, attend class for two and one-half hours in the morning and about two hours in the afternoon. The slightly earlier morning starting time is necessary for efficient operation of school bus sche- dules, Superintendent Michael A. Accetta said Equitable Gas has informed Chartiers Valley flhfll consump- tion is to he l':r.z1ed to 75 por cent of 'le- 'V--e -onsumed 'v-:yy ! e'1t-1 - '3 '-'iarvl IU of last Y'.'dl l-isuwever, tem -- peratures have been and are expected to continued to be colder this year than last. Business Manager Phillip Blake explained there actually is a 21 degree differential in temperature between this period this year and last year. The colder temperatures ac- tually would require a 63 per- cent increase in fuel to maln- tain the same temperatures this year as were maintained in buildings last year. With the temperature differ- tial the 25 per cent curtailment actually was closer to an 80 per cent curtailment in its effect, Blake said. The penalty for exceeding the districts allocation is S10 per thousand cubic feet. By operating all the schools, Dr. Accetta estimated. We could be penalized as much as 350,000 which we absolutely -can not afford. Accetta said depending upon the weather and gas allotments a judgement would be made as to whether the schedule changes will continue beyond March ll. Hy closing buildings now, Chartiers Valley is hoping not to exceed its allotment from Flor-iriiite arid if e'7rttro1:'ft1'tz: some fuel which it hopes to be able to apply to the period from March 10 to April l0 The March curtallment is even more severe, Blake said. Peoples Gas and Columbia Gas Companies which also supply some of the fuel for Chartiers Valley Schools have not curtailed their gas allo- cations to the District, to date. Accetta said a group of 70 parents had worked with admin- istrators in an effort to set up the best schedule possible for the elementary school children. Asked if the District had at- tempted to lower and conserve heat in buildings first before .making the change. the super- intendent said ycs. Accetta explained, it is difficult to regulate heat in a large building. ' At times, some rooms may be verywarm, while others are cool, he said. The superintendent said letters protesting the gas cur- tailment had been sent to state legislators and the Public Utility Commission. Also due to gas curtallments all school buildings areto close after 6 p.m each day and be closed os: weekends until Friday, March ll. The only exception to this is allowing WRUAL. playoff games at the Senior High School. supplied by Peoples Gas, All permits for outside groups to use buildings during February 1977 through March ll, 1977 have been revoked to conform with a Public Utilities Commission directive for, all schools to suspend evening and weekend activities. Architect N. John Cunzolo was asked to report on the cost and feasibility of conducting a study to see how' district buildings can be converted to other types of heating sources. Accetta said Chartiers Valley has not been ordered to con- vert any of its buildings at this time. However, he thought knowing feasibility and costs to do the work would be ad- visable. Some Board members wanted to know the cost of the study before approving it, Among the activities ofi'c:'cti urc dancing.
