In the years to come this yearbook will keep alive the memories gathered during their undergraduate days. The future years will bring new faces and changes to the school scene, but there shall be this record of the friends they knew, the things they did, and the memories that will still be dear to them. Stop! Yes, I said stop-e-e-e-e. Before you turn another page Qto look at the picturesl how about reading what I have to say. After all, I spent two and a half minutes writing these com- ments, so don't let my time spent be fruitless. And besides, we had to have something to take up the space on this page. Since way back in May 1952, when I was chosen to be editor-in-chief, I had been a busy little bug. I had been seriously thinking of themes, colors, and new ideas to make the 1953 Charconge outstanding and different. During the summer, I spent quite a bit of my time Cwhen I wasn't at band practicej pestering Mrs. Cen- nocro, who lived next door until she got married, for theme selections. In the back of my wee tiny headv I had three theme possibilities. We discussed these pro and con throughout the summer. Then when school opened in September, we asked the opinion of several staff members, and finally arrived at the Cay Nineties Revuef, the colorful, cheerful, and amusing theme you see initiated on the cover and title pages. Choosing this theme gave our artists an opportunity to display their talents, which you will see as you progress through the book. The art work, done by MurMur Anderson and Ioe Mauro, is in my estimation tops.', On page I you see Elmer and on page 2 you see Daisy. These two characters from the gay nineties era are starting Con their bicycle built for twoj a guided, all expense free, trip through Charcongeville,' to view a modern high school in operation and to see how education has pro- gressed in over half a century. Aside from the theme, many of the new fea- tures of this yearis Charconge that I think you will enjoy are: the eye catching cover Cin the Senior Class colorsj, the comparison introduction pages, the novel contents page, the informal pictures of the teachers flirst time usedl, the clever senior arrangements and background, the conversational write-ups between Elmer and Daisy, and the newly arranged activities and sports pages. fHere let me get in another plug for that art work.j I hope that at the present and in future years the 1953 Charconge will be read and enjoyed, as I, and the members of the staff, have enjoyed working together to make the yearbook a great success. TOMORBOVVS BIC BUSINESS Public education is the largest public enter- prise in the United States and the country's most important business. More money is invested in the physical plants of education than in any other business. School programs and plants must be reorganized to meet pressing needs of the pres- ent. They must be projected into the future to provide for expansion. The United States is a nation ot free people. This implies both privilege and ability to think clearly and to vote intelligently. The first line of defense for our great land is the public school. Therefore. the greater the political freedom of a nation, the greater is the necessity for the pro- per education of its people. Chartiers Township schools are just one small but important link in the foregoing chain of de- fense. Letis keep foremost in our minds the tact that what was good enough in 1890 was not good enough for 1938, and that which appeared to be sufficient for 1938 is not sufficient for today. Nlr. Bluebaugh PROGRESS The theme ot your yearbook concerns pro- gress, particularly in the field ot education. VVe might measure progress by using a yardstick- such changes as larger and improved school buildingsg changed eurriculag improvement in teacher education and standards for certificationg and in the materials provided both teachers and pupils with which to Work. You are the 'ifinished product in this case. Are you to be measured by a diploma? By how Well you learned your Latin? VVhether or not you can obtain the correct answer to an Algebra problem? By the number of Words you can type in one minute? Perhaps in a sense the above can be used for a partial measurement. But a true measurement will be in the answer to the question-How well have you learned to get along with people? Machines have been invented that give an- swers to many complicated problems. Man, however. must operate the machine. Nothing has ever been. nor will anything ever be invented to take the place of man. Mr. Matz Jaculfy, Left to right: Miss l'1-an-uck, Mr. Mullins. In September 1949, the doors of CTHS swung open to 120 verdant freshmen who were clamor- ing to begin their high school education. Some- what frightened by the bells, and decidedly con- fused by the lengthy assignments of Science, His- tory, and Algebra that were handed out to us, we wondered if any of us would ever make a passing grade. However, our difficulties began to smooth out after a few weeksg and before we realized it, spring flowers were blooming and vacation was at hand. As silly sophomores we answered the roll call in September, 1950. We marched importantly to rooms 12, 14, and 15, convinced that we were the up and coming class. Although our class members began to participate in the school ac- tivities, we didnit yet know who was the best quarterback, the biggest brain, or the guy who was readiest with a wisecrack. During our Junior year we received our class rings and wore them proudly. We presented Men Are Like Streetcarsf, a three-act comedy, as our junior play. The highlight of our social events was the junior Prom, which we held in honor of the Seniors. We were the first class to hold a post-prom party. Two hundred students attended this event at the Washington country c ub. September 1952 was the beginning of this all important Senior year. VVe elected class officers, selected class colors and a motto. Our class members were prominent in the school's activi- ties. Our Senior play was Seventeen is Awfully Young. This was the year of pictures, name cards, invitations and gowns. As we go to press with our yearbook we look back-having played the last game, participated in the final concert, and taken the last examination-we are now ready to move on to larger roles in the affairs of community, nation and world. IL We wish to pav t11bute to two members of the class of 1953 MGIWIH Beall dled February 1952 and Eric Henderson died August 1952 whose deaths were a real loss to our Senior group as well as to then families ' 9 I . . . 30 'XV' 'W' 'XV' 'TIP 'XV' 'W' 'XV' 'XV' 'W' 'W' 'UP 'UP 'TV' 'W' 'W 'Mnzlan,cla4.4m,Qn, 32 ny: GH: j 1 6l6IAA!2.0DIl'lA .... ffm, donna, thfwuqh, which, wa, pau, . dwzlvpbzq. 127 ' fnmhmm Jhfo matufuz, fmmbu..
