It has carried us safely through the turbulent years of unrest and world conflict, and finally, out into the sunshine of prospective world peace and unity. lt is now about to discharge us upon the platform of what the whole civil- ized world hopes will be the station of atomic age peace. From here each must embark upon his own respective course. Our travels together will soon have ended. We approach this station in life with a degree of uncertainty, yet with our hearts fired with hope, for we realize that without hope, we have no chance for progress and advancement. All that we hear today is talk of fear. We want to leave our fears behind us and look forward to the goodness of man and the greatness of world peace. We must individually and collectively remove the shell of indifference that surrounds us and let our better selves show through. We must make the maximum use of the talents with which our Creator has endowed us. Finally, we must have faith-faith in the Almighty, faith in our government, faith in mankind, and faith in ourselves. We must have the courage and deter- mination to take our rightful places in this post-war world. We must have the moral stamina to choose right from wrong and the conviction to act as individuals. We must leave this land of ours a better place in which to live for our 'having been here. We must be Americans. Ralph 25. Q fx 4 , . '24 I 14604 cf At last, after six years of preparatory traveling through Chartiers High School, we the members of the Senior Class are ready to board another train, a train, the run of which is life and the destination happiness. Our preparation for this uncertain but interesting trip began in 1941, when we entered Chartiers as seventh graders. For the next six years we were taught subiects which would be a help to us in later life, but more important, we learned the part played by discipline, sportsmanship, and courtesy in shaping a well- rounded personality. We engaged in social and extra-curricular activities, which trained us in leadership, accepting responsibility, and cooperation. As our train chugs its way clown the track we shall pass through such stations as college, trade school, and the school of hard knocks, where we shall be greeted by disappointment, and set backs, as well as encouragement and progress. lt may be a long trip before success is achieved, longer for some than 'for others. The engineer, Miss Mabel Peacock, is little but she is mighty. The tall handsome conductor is none other than lb Vs, f N XX 14 X Miss Mabel Peacock Frank D'Ottavio, the class president. Frank is intelligent and dependable. The brakeman, Bill Warne, is always on hand to ably take over the conductor's duties if the need arises. Not many trains have such attractive and efficient firemen as we have in Kathleen Funka, our secretary. and Florence Barnhill, our treas- urer. The crew and passengers of train T947 have cooperated with each other in almost every situa- tion. With the experience of such a successful high school trip, we are ready to venture into a longer and more difficult one in life. Shultz S116 D126 C7116 The most outstanding activity of the Sub Deb Club is the sponsoring of the Coronade Dance, which features the crowning of the May Queen and King, and the May Pole Dance cen- tered around a human May Pole. The Valentine Dance is also sponsored by this club. Each month the club has a social get together such cis bowling, ci hayride, a patch party, a trip to Pittsburgh to see Tap Time and a Christmas party. This year Secret Sisters have been se- lected to remember each other's birthday and Christmas. Mrs. Ruth Ferguson organized the Sub Deb Club ond has been its sponsor since its begin- ning. The club is divided into two sections, the training chorus and the advanced chorus. Peggy Hunter and Marjorie Peacock are the accompanists. Four persons were selected from the chorus to attend the Western Pennsylvania Song Festival at Clairton, Pennsylvania: Elizabeth Jacobs, Marjorie Peacock, David Westwater, and Arthur Miller. The Kuccaneer The Buccaneer is the school paper that keeps all the Chartierians up to date on the events of the year. At each stop, and in each station, the passenger train of 1947 hears about ofiice news, club news, homeroom news, social activities and gossip, for no passenger travels far on a local train without hearing gossip. Day by day os the train travels on its way, the newspaper is assembled. The paper is then distributed to all the passengers in the coaches ofthe Chartiers Train, and also to the neighboring tracks of other schools. Miss Mary Bigger is the capable sponsor of the Buc- caneer, Arthur Miller is the editor, who sees that the typists, artists, and reporters get the work done properly, as well as promptly. A new mimeograph was bought this year to print the Buccaneer. Halogen means salt former and it is a striking example of a chemical family: florine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine. The main obiective of this organization, which is composed of the scientific- minded seniors of our school, is to enter projects in the science fair at Buhl Planetarium. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A model ofa Van De Graaf? Elec- trostatic Generator and a Nelson Cell producing chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide are a few examples of the proiects. Danley Iibrar-iam Our librarians are girls that have given up one free period a week in order to help the students at Chartiers to increase their knowledge by reading the books in the library. Each girl is given a number to designate her name in case of a mixup or disorder in the file cards. She has various duties to perform in order to keep her title as a librarian, the checking of books in and out, collection of fines, and finally keeping the library in good order throughout the day. These things are done under the excellent leadership and supervision of Miss Mabel Peacock, who spends much of her time selecting and purchasing more books for the students. The purpose of the club was to provide experience for our commercial students in high school. These secretaries have become a great help to many of our faculty. They are well qualified to operate all our office machines and efficient in typing stencils and in performing many other skills that they have learned in their typing and shorthand classes. Without the aid of their capable director and adviser, Miss Clara Jaylock, this could not have been accomplished. Her ability to impress upon her business students the importance of taking responsibility, being dependable, and per- severing until a iob is done has been the determining factor in graduating sec- retaries. 51 Miss McNary, Dr. Donaldson, R. Beton fducativn or Healthy I i ing The aim of education is to provide opportunity for optimum mental, physical, emotional, and social growth and development of each individual to the end that he may gain increasing control over his own behavior and make satisfactory adjustment to an ever changing society. Every effort, therefore, should be made to keep ourselves in first class mental and physical health. Pennsylvania has taken a forward stride to assure more of our young people of stronger and healthier bodies. The recent School Health Act 35425 provides that each student and each school employee shall have a complete physical exam- ation at least every two years. This program will detect many physical defects which can be readily treated by family physicians before they have become a severe handicap. The co-operation of every parent, teacher, and student is necessary to make this program operate. We owe the success of our well organized health program to our School Nurse, Anne McNary, to our Medical Examiner, Dr. A. V. Donaldson, and to our Dental Examiner, Dr. Robert Smith. Miller, Mr. Mitchell univr own meeting of the ,dir A newly formed organization at Chartiers this year is the Junior Town Meeting of the Air. For a year or so various high schools throughout the county have participated in this program and this year our school was invited to take part, also. The programs are sponsored by W. J. P. A., and are presented weekly by the six schools in the circuit, Washington, East Washington, Trinity, Canonsburg, Washington Seminary, and Chartiers. Each school has approximately four meetings of its own-one every six weeks-and these programs are broadcast before the whole high school in an assembly. Members are all from the Senior High and each six weeks four of the group lead a program discussion on some current topic. A forum for ques- tions from the student body gives many a chance to participate. Chartiers lost the first two games to Canonsburg and Clark, both Class A schools and the other one to Bethel which was runner-up in the W. P. I. A. L. Class B Championship. Chartiers defeated North Fayette, Avella, Hickory, East Washington, and South Fayette in its Class B clashes. lt will be hard for Coach Ellwood to replace such stars as William Tarolli, William Santel, Richard Caumo, Frank Vulcano,.Marlin Funka, David Westwater, Nick Salandra, and Don Biz- zack. These boys played on the 1945 team and helped to win the W. P. I. A. L. Champion- ship that year. We were honored to have three of our fel- lows chosen as W. P. l. A. L. all stars this year. After the schedule had been completed the team ended up with 8 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses. The highlight of the season came when Chartiers tied Canons- burg, the I947 W. P. I. A. L. champs. This was the only dark mark on the Canonsburg record. Chartiers entered a full team to compete in the W. P. I. A. L. Tournament at Washington High School. When the clash was over Chartiers, tied for second place with Farrell, had one W. P. I. A. L. champ and three runners-up. The champ was Rusty Santel in the 145 pound class who defeated Vallely from Farrell 3-O in the finals and the runners-up were Francis Zanin in the 88 pound class, William DePaoli in the T20 pound class, and Frank Vulcano in the T33 pound class.
