SCHOGL BA D The Charlottesville School Band, under the excellent direction of Mr. Austin Smith, started the year with a bang. They placed 14th out of 90 entries in the marching competition at the Indiana State Fair, With a lot of hard practice, they entered state auditions for marching bands in Class C and brought home a first division rating. It was stated on the comment sheet that the community has a band to be proud of. This spring the band participated in the Hancock County Spring Music Festival. They practiced diligently in preparation for state concert band auditions held in March. Mr. Smith and his band have a history they can well be proud of. In the 12 years of concert auditions and 4 years of marching auditions, they have earned and display in the trophy case 14, first division plaques. Many uniforms are covered with medals won at district and state events. Officers for the year are: Rowena Silver, Presidentg Wayne Dye, Vice-President, Judy Mc- Clarnon, Secretary-Treasurerg and Judy Carmany, Reporter. Page 55

At the District Marching Contest at Southport, the band again came through with a first division placing. They marched at the Carth- age Festival and at Butler Univer sity Homecoming. And, what a day at Butler! One might say Butler joined the Charlottesville band! The band marched at some of the home games and ended the year at the District Band Contest.
