o) Ke Xamp ALMA MATER Where the tall pines meet the sky And to great ambitions give start, That ' s where the heavenly beams shine down And throw a light on each heart. Our A Ima Mater true, Memorial ' s Nursing School, Your worthy goals and noble aims To us will ever appeal. To thee we pledge our hearts and lives Memorial, our great Ideal. The Senior Class of Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing proudly presents i w DEDICA TION For twenty -odd years you have guided my way. You showed me love, you understood my rebellions and problems, you taught me, rather than how not to fall, but how to rise once I fell, you showed your wisdom in saying no, your kindness in saying yes, and now you have launched my new found wings of independence and maturity. You sent me out, not with empty hands and mind but years of love and understanding, laughter, and tears and a bit of wisdom and wiseness that only you could give me. And now I say with humble meaning, Thank you Mom and Dad! Throughout these past years at CMH we have gradually evolved into some semblance of the professional nurse. Every day, whether it be hap- py or sad, dull or hectic, trying or rewarding has given us a background upon which we will build a profession. By constant exposure to hospital- life and the world of medicine, we have adopted the jargon, experienced the trials and tribulations, gained new ideas, and maybe even a new set of values. So, here we have finally arrived to a new plateau, fired with the en- thusiasm and idealism of the young - the world of the graduate. 12 mm SYLVIA ANN ALLEN Jefferson, N. C. Com- bining nursing skills with patience, tireless energy, and a sense of humor, the senior student completes ten weeks of challenging patient care of little people . OBSTETRICS Obstetrical nursing not only requires acute ob- servation and good judgement on the part of the student but also emotional involvement with the mother and family unit. Obstetrics is probably the most unique service in which the student finds herself during the senior year. 34 INTENSIVE CARE Intensive care unit is appropriately titled, as this is precisely what is required of the student nurse -- intensive care given to the patient. This is per- haps the first experience the student has in nurs- ing such critically ill patients. Using theory and practical experience obtained through intensive study, the student gains confidence and skill in car- ing for all patients. A ir , - ' «r m III TEAM NURSING Organization and communication among nursing personnel are vital components in giving good nursing care. The student nurse gets first hand experience in acquiring and using these skills while working as a team leader and functioning as a member of the nursing team. Hard work and a vast knowledge of pathology and disease are re- quired in team nursing. 35 EMERGENCY ROOM Emergency nursing requires quick thinking and action plus responsible judgement. Working in the emergency room gives the student varied and prof- itable experience in using acquired nursing know- ledge and skill in situations which call for imme- diate care. O UTPA TIENT CLINIC While in the outpatient clinics of the hospital the senior student is provided with the opportunity to convey her accumulated knowledge of nutrition, hygiene, and self- care to the layman. Not only does this experience let her teach, but she also gains knowledge in practically all phases in medicine from the doctors she assists. 36 . V. TEAM Principles of intravenous therapy are acquired by the student while working with the I. V. Team. This knowledge instills confidence in the student while caring for patients receiving this therapy and enables her to give better care. 37 38 iik.m Lamp A ward MISS JANE CAROLYN WILLARD The Lamp Award is annually presented to the Senior student who best exhibits quali- ties of leadership, scholarship, character, and who has made worthwhile contributions to school-life. For those qualities which have set her apart as an outstanding member of our Senior Class, the Lamp Award is presented to Miss Jane Willard. 40 jtl L. to R. Ann Baum - Chief; Gail Smith, Diane Dobbins, Barbara Howie. Not Pictured - Sharon Lucus Marshals Each year those students from the rising Senior class who have ex- hibited high scholastic achievement are chosen to be marshals. These students function at graduation exercises in helping to seat guests and to lead in the graduating class. 41 Miss Student Nurse of The Year Each year the Junior class chooses a rep- resentative to represent our Hospital in the Miss Student Nurse of the Year Contest. She must show leadership qualities, be in the up- per one-fourth of her class and maintain a B average. Miss Katherine Klump Miss Sharon Kay Lucas Miss Student Nurse Contest Each year a Junior student is chosen by her class to represent the school in the Miss Student Nurse Pageant. She is chosen on the basis of personality, personal attractiveness, poise, leadership qualities and she must main- tain a B average her Junior year. 42 Miss Carolyn Bailey Miss Rosemary Ferguson Class Beauties Miss Sharon Lucas Miss Barbara Howie 43 Christmas Queen CHRISTMAS QUEEN Miss Patricia Ruth Farmer CHRISTMAS COURT Marilyn Pearce, UNC - C Sandra Boone, Sr. CMH Sarah Ingram, CPCC May Queen MAY QUEEN Miss Carol Morris ATTENDANTS Mary Kay Davis - CPCC Becky Beane - Junior Class Vickie Fesperman - UNC - C 45 46 Hi mi x - : •V • s ♦X - -X 4 Jm • ' N . They have given joint performances during the year with the Presbyterian Glee Club in- cluding a Christmas program and a Spring Concert. Mr. J. D. Morrison, who is Minister of Music at Park Road Baptist Church and sings with the Charlotte Opera Association, is their director. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. J. D.Morrison, Di- rector; Carol English, Pianist; Rebecca Beane, President. Hi 49 Santa Filomena The Santa Filomena is the Senior Honorary Society of Charlotte Me- morial Hospital Schoo l of Nursing. The members of this organization are chosen from the rising Senior Class and are publicly tapped by the old members at the last Student Body meeting of the year in their Junior year. Each student must have demonstrated superior nursing abilities and leader- ship. Her scholastic record must be a B or above throughout the Fresh- man and Junior years. The Santa Filomena ' s flower is the white lily and each member of the Society wears a smallgold Florence Nightingale Lamp pin on the uniform as a symbol of achievement. L. to R.: Lynn Wallace, Barbara Howie, Becky Beane, Sharon Lucas. Not Pictured - Kathy Klump. 50 Social Committee Our social committee is an active organization which promotes activ- ities in which the student may participate. This year they have been re- sponsible for Parent ' s Weekend, Peanut Week, The Christmas Dance, and Spring semi-formal, as well as many other enjoyable events. We are especially thankful for the marvelous job that they have done this year. 51 Student Council The Student Council Organization conducts all business of the Student Government Association and coordinates the activities of our various clubs and organizations on campus. The Council is composed of the Student Government officers, representatives from the class and each organization. This organization helps to maintain high standards of loyalty, duty, and scholarship and advances the general welfare of our school. 52 53 McEWEN FUNERAL SERVICE ED 4-6421 — FR 5-6502 727 E.
