This year we would like to recognize Miss Tomczak for going so far beyond the basic duties of her work to be a Mother to us away from home. She has made it a habit to do the extra things, and treat each student as an individual. She is always of greatest assistance in emer- gencies and with our problems. We will always be grateful for the vital interest she has shown in us and for making our life at CMH so much happier. Senior Gfass OJfi icers Graduation! As seniors we have many memories to cherish: the timid individuals we were when we entered these halls; our first Christmas party; the first injection, delivery and day in the operating room; picnics at Freedom Park; cold showers; the first Rat Court; and sharing the joy of engagements and weddings with our classmates. As we go our separate ways with varied goals, we recall the words of Tennyson ' s Ulysses — I am a part of all that I have met, yet, all ex- perience is an arch where through gleams that untraveled world whose margin fades forever and forever when I move. Jionor G( on or yjounci • The Honor Council is the judiciary body established for the purpose of considering infractions of honor. The Council exerts authority concerning dishonesty in classroom situations, violations of rules governing group living, lack of respect for property of classmates, hospital, and the School of Nursing, and incidents of untruthfulness. The student body elects qualified members to compose the Council. The policy of the Council requires an honor code which has been ac- cepted by the student body. The purpose of this system is to secure the loyalty and cooperation of each student in maintaining personal and group honor in all phases of professional and social life. It is dependent upon individual honor and respect for one self and others. cj ac en Gouncif Student Council members represent the four officers of the student gov- ernment, representatives from each class, and the presidents of each school organization. This organization conducts all business of the Student Government As- sociation, supervises and coordinates the activities of our various organi- zations and clubs. It transacts any official measures submitted and adopted by its membership. The Council tries to maintain the high standards of loyalty, duty, and scholarship, and advance the general welfare of our school. Student Gnris ian Association The Student Christian Association of Charlotte Memorial Hospital en- riches the spiritual life of the students. It functions to provide Christian activities for each student as a means for Christian development. Each student becomes a member of the S.C.A. upon admission to the school. As a member of this organization, each student participates in pre- paring Family Altar, held Monday through Thursday evenings in the residence; Vesper services, conducted each Wednesday evening in the hos- pital chapel ; and Sunday morning worship services, also held in the chapel. Programs centered around Christian activities and responsibilities are planned each month for the students. The retreats provide special op- portunities to students for Christian fellowship with students from other schools. cban a ruomena Santa Filomena is the senior honorary society of Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Each member is recognized for her achievement and ability to promote leadership. In addition, each member must have demonstrated superior nursing abilities, and have attained a high scholastic record dur- ing her first two years of nursing school. Members are chosen from the rising senior class by the present mem- bers and are faculty approved. The new members are publicly tapped by the old members at a regular Student Government meeting. Members are distinguished by the small gold Florence Nightingale lamp pin worn above the name tag on the student uniform. This pin is also worn on the grad- uate uniform. Une loamp Students from all classes were active in producing this, the eighteenth annual edition of the yearbook. We are delighted to include the new front color section, the beauties, the Lamp Award, and the student directory for the first time along with many other new additions. We are especially proud to have dedicated this edition to our beloved Miss Tomczak. (u yns and L5umpfoms This year there were six editions of the Signs and Symptoms , the school newspaper. New additions this year were a student of the month from each class, elected by her classmates, and Snooping Susie, a gos- sip column. The paper published an account of the events and activities of the School of Nursing and of the students. Student interest in the paper ' s improved quality of news and editorials was evidenced by the trip- ling of sales and the quadrupling of profits. G ass of 1964 Says 9ooc Sye We came as strangers; we leave as sisters. We came to strange build- ings; we leave a home. We came naive; we have seen birth, death and learned the sorrows of life. We came seeking knowledge; we leave as graduate nurses. We came seeking fun and found dates, the River, Abbey, picnics, Davidson, Shoney ' s, engagements and husbands. We came, we grew, we now leave these doors keeping all of our memories close to our hearts forever. Memorial Our Great Ideal. Between the innocence of an entrance exam and an R. N. comes a lov- able creature called a student nurse. They come in assorted sizes, heights, and shapes, but they all have the same creed: To enjoy every second of every day off duty, and protect with griping (their only weapon), when their forty hour week is over and their instructors are in the Snack Bar. ' Student Nurses are found everywhere: underneath, jumping from, strug- gling over, and running through. Patients love them, R.N. ' s boss them, orderlies ignore them, Doctors tol- erate them, and Heaven protects them. A Student Nurse is truth with blood on her uniform, beauty with gloves on her hand, wisdom with penicillin in her hair, and the future with a newborn baby in her arms. To doctors a student nurse is an inconsiderate, questioning, and in- truding bundle of noise. When you want her to make a good impression she becomes a giggling creature, bent on wasting as much time as possible, and sleeping through class. A student nurse has the appetite of a horse, the digestion of a dis- posal unit, the energy of a soapsuds enema, the lungs of a switchboard operator, the sharpness of a scaple, the audacity of a nurse ' s aide, then when she gives pills, she has five thumbs on each hand. She likes food, vacation, money from home, Christmas, love stories, stuffed animals, water in its natural habitat, doctors, working elevators, and days off. She is not much for: books without pictures, operating room dresses, hair nets, study hours, metric systems, and case studies, not to mention classes. Nobody is so late to bed and so early to rise. Nobody gets so much out of medical conferences and lectures. No one can cram into one day five enemas, twelve complete bed baths, five subjects, three trips to the morgue, two trips to the nursing office, fifty aspirins, set up a uniform, polish her shoes, stay out until twelve o ' clock, and still get along with her roommate. A student nurse is a magical creature. You can campus her, but can ' t make her stay out of trouble. You can put her on study hours, but you can ' t make her study. She is a freckled-faced, starry-eyed, fun loving bundle of noise, but when she gets off duty with her tired feet, and her aching back she has a funny way of dropping into bed and saying ' Good night ' , but not with out those famous last words, ' Check on me in the morning. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service around the globe. These were the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of the United States. And now he is dead.
