As the last footsteps of our training are taken, we anxiously search for some means of keeping before us the happiness, accomplishments and disappointments shared during these years. Witll this in mind,-the Senior Class proudly presents the 1957 LAMP in hopes that a lasting bond of friendship will unite us, and should our paths again cross, names, faces and events will not have passed with time. THE EDITOR Page 3 Page 4 As WE TURN oUR THOUGHTS T0 THE PAST, we realize that it is our parents who always form the foundation for our youth. They are the ones who have directed our first steps toward the road of learning, who bandaged our cuts and bruises, and listened with patience to our tales of woe. Our parents are the ones who have made numerous sacrifices for us, they are the ones who have helped us overcome obstacles, and it is they who have comforted us when our worlds were in chaos. Therefore, in recognition and sincere appreciation of their untiring, endless devotion, service, and love, we dedicate this, our 1957 LAMP, to those We love best- DEDICHTIGH JF U HPPRECIHTIGH To THOSE OF YOU who have been an inspiration to us during our three years in this school of nursing, who have been the bright light to guide us by faith, understanding, encouragement, and patience, We, the Senior Class of 1957, express our deepest appreciation and gratitude for guiding us. SEHIGH CLHSS 79:9 '.l5.j 1' CLHSS FROM 1954, THE BIRTHDATE of the Class of 957, we trace our footsteps . . . On September the sixth, the footprints began as sixty-four of us became pre-clini- cals. The day may not be recorded in history but to these, it began the memorable three years. Coodbyes were said to parents, sweethearts and friends and we became a part of the student body of C. lVl. H. The first week, the upperolassmen and faculty helped us to feel that We ubelongedf, There were parties for us but the Hfitting- in process was slow. Getting settled in our rooms, trying to get acquainted with so many new people and learning our Way around left us with a soared and empty feeling. At! the end of the week, we began classes and wondered how we could ever learn it all. With long hours of class and study, we began our preparation for the fulfill- ment of our dreams. ln Nursing Arts Lab, we began the prac- tice of what had looked at one time like the impossible. We still remember how we feared attempting to carry out the proced- ures on a real patient, but as we began our work in the clinical area we realized more each day that actual patient care in- creased our interest. Wfith this beginning, the foundation was laid for the building of confidence and nursing skills. To lead us through this freshman year, we chose as class officers, Peggy James, president, Kitty Brown, vice-president, Peggy Helms, secretary, and Mary Lou H ISTGRY Davis, treasurer. One of the highlights of the year was the talent show at the Hallow- een Carnival which took the first prize. Another exciting event was the Christmas dance followed by the Christmas tree party, after which we all packed our bags to go home for the long awaited vacation. The next four months passed rapidly with longer hours on the Hoor and more threats to go home and final cramming for exams. And finally, the night which had once seemed only a dream was here . . . Capping. The following day, work was interrupted frequently as we paused to look in the mir- ror and to reassure ourselves that the small white cap was still ours. After two weeks' vacation we came back and began to know what an eight hour day was. The summer passed quickly and before we knew it we were juniors .... We began special services, 3-1 1, and study hours. For our class officers we chose Marilyn Daly, president, Janey Waggener, vice-president, Shirley Wood, secretary, and Ann Britt, treasurer. We said good-bye to mother and daddy and looked around horrified at all the new faces. All the formality . . . isn't anyone friendly? And then those ghastly looking pictures in all those books . . . are we expected to learn all this? The faces became more friendly, we changed, the environment became more familiar. Then we got our caps. Just a piece of material to some onlookers, but it was part of us, part of what we Wanted. It was very hot that first summer. The fall came, more new girls. Busy days and nights learning, preparing ourselves. And then it was 1957 . . . We graduate this year. We will be on our own. We worked while others slept, while others were having holidays, but each day this thing became more sacred to us. We are women now, we came from different homes, we have different faces. Time past . . . what did it give to us? Time present . . . we think of the verse, uThe heights of great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were trailing upward through the nightf, Time future . . . Twelve left for Torrance and the rest of us knew we would follow. Spring and summer brought long awaited vaca- tions, the Junior-Senior Banquet and sun bathing in our own 'Wlemorial Beach. On September 6, they gave us our black stripes and at last we were Seniors. We ac- cepted responsibility and began to look for- ward to the day when there would be two black stripes. How well we remember night duty, the last group coming back from Pennsylvania and being measured for white uniforms. For class officers we chose Ann Britt, president, Betty Love, vice-presidentg Edna Martin, secretary, and Barbara Hull, treasurer. lVlrs. Cathryne Kennedy was our class sponsor. With humble hearts we say uthank youn to our faculty and our parents for help- ing us along the Way. Our appreciation to them is so great that we have no alternative except to make them proud of us, to know their efforts to make us nurses were not in vain. We say Hgoodbyen to C. lVl. H. but we shall remember it with love and gratitude. rAlthousgh our pathstwilligo sepafate ways, we will review the memories of our days here in the scrapbook of our minds. As we do this, there will be a tugging at our heart- strings for the things that are gone forever. l gpqgwlu' Tad. ada-4.5 UH- C.: ' M..-agcuk Pff '-'ml nupfg 3 . - moon- 1 44,49 an-Ax! 1-4411-zfgg , 9- f-6.1.4-J, - '-W.. 04-.gf g 5Page' 93 1 tt it , , is-1, V: f, r+ ,q A - Q . . , ,V if . , ' ,Eg A ' 'v,'f-Q YA i , , V V YV . , Q . - L V .
