In the above words from our Alma Mater the theme of the 1957 Witan, Time and Tide is expressed, in its truest sense. Charlotte High School has maintained its proud position for 53 years and during this time many generations of youth have been influenced. Throughout history, youth has always been the ideal time of life. If this were not so, why should those who have it, live in dreams of it, build their lives from it, and live with the memory of it? Like the waves of Lake Ontario endlessly rolling upon the sand, thousands of students have entered the portals of our school, and after charting their courses, making life long friends and participating in various activities- moved out into the sea of life, just as the Genesee River continues to wind its way to the Lake. Youths' adven- tures and activities are livelier than those of old age. Imagination seems to flow more easily across their minds like the tide. To Youth comes new ideas, new thoughts, new plans, all of which are surrounded with the en- thusiasm that only Youth displays in its undertaking and only time will tell what is to be. The theme of Time and Tide lends itself naturally to Charlotte High School because of its age and locale. We, the Class of 1957, hope that you the readers con- cur with us in the thought that it is logical and germane. Remember, Time and Tide wait for no man. 1Nr.1a -'- -SW' - 'luv- 'WZ ' .V x ,L , M. During his eleven years as Principal of Charlotte High School he has tried to solve all problems with equal fairness. Friendliness, good humor, and a sincere desire to know each student . . . these are only a few of the many fine qualities which Mr. Denison has shared with us. 10 To the Class of 1957: Many years ago Albert Einstein remarked that science cannot produce happiness un- til men produces sense. Making sense today means leaming quickly how to get along with each other. Only thus can individuals hope for hap- piness and peoples for peace. Make this a major goal of your con- tinuing education. All our good wishes go with you! G. M. Denison Charlotte High School has a new and welcome figure in its fold this year. From a combined job at East High School where he was both in charge of East High Annex and Vice principal of the school comes our new Vice principal Mr. Gates. Born in Hornell, N. Y., Mr. Gates grad- uated from Olean High School and worked in the shoe and the banking business be- fore attending Colgate University. Grad- uate study at the University of Rochester and Syracuse completed his educational background. Charles D. Like Franklin and Monroe. Charlotte then had a green- house Cllub of 50 to 60 int.-nrbers which inet after school. ln this club students worked on their own projects. but they also field Qlhristtnas Sales, etc., for the benefit of the club treasury. In addition, parents joined evening classes in horticulture, and frotn this activity the Lalte Shore Garden Club, still active to- day. was then organized. Prior to September 19156. Mr. lit-nnett wrote the niain structure of the syllabus for the Horticulture 60 HISTORY OF CHARLOTTPS HORTICULTURE CllII'I'lC'llll1IIl which. with revisions. is still used today. It was approved by the State Supervisor of Agricul- tural Education in 19156, and ornantental horticulture on a yocational basis began at Charlotte. This course provided training' for florists. greenhouse keepers, nursery nien. and inarltet gardeners. Horticulture and Charlotte began to be synonymous. During the late thirties and before the war, night school classes for adults were formed in gardening and landscaping. About 125 people registered for be- ginning and advanced classes in these courses, People from all parts of the city catue to Charlotte High night classes. Victory Qardt-ns were encouraged in industry and elt-int-ntary school during the war by Charlotte High Staff and day classes who sent materials and in- struction sheets out into the conununity. HORTICULTURAL SALES The clever displays of colorful Howers are familiar sights in Clharlotttfs front hall. The Horticulture llepartinent produces these sales on particular occasions for the ben- efit of both the llcpartinent and the students and faculty. As part of instruction in the departfncnt. crops grown in the greenhouse are soltl. Not only does the course teach pupils how to Qrow crops successfully but also gives the pupils experience in sLllt's as wt-11. Few courses offer the full cycle of instruction of production. preparation for sale and actual sales. 'l'hey are usually planned for holi- days. Nirs. Morrison's antl B111 KllIl1IJf,S classes alternate the hantlline of the sales. Each has a student manager and under hini a publicity manager. sales manager. and production inanaeer. Front September to June the occasions for the sales are in this order: Fall liulb Sale, Christmas. Valentine's Day. St. Patrick's Day, Easter. Nlotht-r's Day, and Spring Plants Sale for garden use. Since it is important that the planned flfwwets must blooin near the day of the sale, Qrt-at care goes into the advance preparation. Very often plants are plantetl six months ahead of tinie. The profits are used to buy new etluipnient, bulbs, and supplies for the llortit'ulturt' llepaittnent. Students and faculty have the opportunity to buy plants. bulbs. shrubs. and freshly cut flowers: thus the whole school and t'ornn1unity are inoit- aware of the beauties and values of the subject Horticulture. All students in the eighth grade are given the opportunity to take a series of explor- atory courses to orient themselves with the senior high. Such courses may help them to decide what to major in during future years. Exploratory Horticulture, by stress- ing the highlights of Horticulture, oflers many advantages to students. W'hat is learned during this course can be put to use at various times in later life. Explor- atory Horticulture opens up possibilities. If the interest and talents of the students seem to run along these lines they will discover this during the course and they can later pursue the Vocational or Non Vocational course. The course also has the advantage of appealing to students on an avocational basis. They can learn much that will help them when they have gar- dens of their own either to beautify their homes or as hobbies. wr 4 R Carlton F Krasselt Whiteside F Whiteside R Carlton F Krasselt F hitman Whitman EXPLORATORY HORTICULTURE fx W 'F ' . ! 1' Y J' Y I . 7 ' J' . It was a spectacle of color, elaborate costumes, and talent. The Flashes takes place in alternate years. Its purpose is to raise money for the school. The purchase of a new projector for the audito- rium was made possible from funds thus earned in former years. Students and faculty worked together many hours planning, staging, and rehearsing the show. The art classes made clever three dimensional posters advertising the coming attraction. The seventeen student variety acts were proof that Charlotte is filled with hidden, and some not so hidden talent. People Will Say We re In Love A it . This was strictly an honor group consisting of Latin students having A or B marks at the end of the first year. Charlotte High promoted the idea of Optirnates and as a result has the Alpha Chapter. Since its beginning until now, Optiruates has played a significant part in school affairs. There have been Inter-High Banquets which Latin Honor students from all schools have attended. Charlotte has spon- sored several of these large parties. Fin! Row, left to right: C. Landers, D, Curtin, J. Carnahan, S. Mooney, H. Hz-rendeen, L. Richerdson. Second Row: G. Lf-wx C. Hilliard, C. Cross Country competition, a 5 won 3 loss slate, good enough for third place in the Interscholastic standings. Led by Gary Thompson, who achieved two first places in four meets, the team ran over most of their opponents and got the low total of points neces- sary for victory in Cross Country races. The Reserve Squad, CHSI runners of the future, broke even in their meets with a 3-3 record. In the annual Scholastic Race, with a field of forty- three runners, Gary Thompson took ninth place and Carl liernstine eleventh. In the Sectionals, Charlotte again made a fine showing by finishing fourth in a field of sixteen teams. BOWLING First Team Bowling, left to right: R. Ladue, R. Maher, B. MacGregor, J. Riley. Charlotte Marshall to Right: W. Sile, H. Leary, J. Fardette. WRESTLING Wrestling, a successful sport at Charlotte the last few seasons, had perhaps its most prosperous year this season. Finishing in third place with a five won, three loss record, Charlotte caught its second wind and with a tremendous finishing kick, placed seven men in the city finals of the sectionals. For the regular season, last year's sectional cham- pion, Harry Leary, until he suffered a broken nose in the sixth meet, pinned every opponent. Bill Sile finished undefeated, and Dave Ferguson, Jim Far- dette, and Frank Caricchio had only one blemish on their slates. In the city finals, Leary, Fardette, and Sile won while Ferguson and Caricchio lost, referees' decisions, and Charley Henley and Tom Peer were outpointed. In the Section 5 tournament, Leary again became champion along with Fardette and Sile. v- 1 11 S ' lf' X 1 r1tR0.1 W 1 11111 D 51 l17lY NN Uttm 1n M 511111 R Blrd Mr Dunn Second R011 Yoit lx M1 N 11r K 51111111111 C ur1111r1 Sh1r111an X1 M1lx1 II 1111 L Brltt R C 11111111 CHS LHS CHS CHS LHS 1 IIS LHS C IIS VARSITY VARSITY SCORES M3d15OH Monroe Mirshall Jefferson East Fd1son I r 1n1111n West 1 X JINIIX 111 1 tl 1111 111 10111 111171 1 1011511 tl and 11111 t111111111 1111111 111111 X110 111 t111' f1I1Zi1 Contest OS1I'1U'C111x1 t ts 111 XX111111I1f 111111 111111 11111 11111811 111 111 NL 181111 XILIIN St 1111 1111 1 N11 1111111 10111ff ut 1 11111 llifxlld H 11 111 1111 4111 11111111 1 1111111 111 X11 111111111 and UZIXC 11ff11ts 11111 an a1t1f111 IJ 1111111 19 t11 X loss to 'VIz1rs11a11 up H111 111111 BASEBALL - 1956 1 1111111 1111 1 .1 KI 11111111 1 11010 1111112 and one In 21 11111 0111111111 NI 1IS1'1d11 111111111 111' had 11111 11111111111 1 11 11'11f 11111S 1 1911111111111 111111111111 NKXLII 10 11111 CHS lost a Close S1 1111 1 1 11 1 1111111 of t one 1111136 to two RESERVES RhSE11X I' 8101111 I S CIS 1:1115 1 11 I ..,.. Charlotte had this combination, with the best trained, best looking, best cheerleading squad in the city, Captains of the Varsity Squad were Charmaine Biehler and Carol LeShander. MAJORETTES The Majorettes came into their own in ,57 with a sparkling smooth performing band of twirlers led by Adalaide Bonamie. They per- formed at the halftimes in many of the games and in the HLight- house Flashes. .IV The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were as equally adept at cheers as the varsity and cheered for the Soccer games, and the j.V. Basketball contests. Captain of the squad was Margo Smith. x lit Rozy: Cf. Pottvr, likstrximl. KI. Xlciiarroll, P. Duckworth, C. I.:ilu-, N. Smith, fx.
