AT THE END O THE RAlNBow The Class of 1953 presents 6 A 'Q Q X Ps if Ch In I-Igh Sch I Rochester, New Y lc Qur principol Mr. Glenn M. Denison February 5, l953 Both in scripture and in folklore, the rainbow symbolizes a promise. May each of you 1953 graduates fulfill your promise by being true to what you have learned in your homes and in your school. You go out into a confused and confusing world. Uncertainty is the pattern of the times. Decisions are difficult. But basic values do not change. Truth, decency, respect for self and others - these do not lose their meaning. We can make our decisions on the basis of the best that we know and feel. Then we can face the most uncertain future with confidence, and without fear or shame. Glenn lvl. Denison -l-o Qur Friend ond Guide . . Dr. james S. Wishart Dr. Wishart earned both his Bachelor of Arts and his Master of Science degrees at the University of Rochester. He then went on to Princeton University where he ob- tained his Master of Arts and his Doctor ot Philosophy degrees. His interest in geology took him into neighboring states and parts of Canada including Labrador, On- tario, and Quebec, where he served as a geologist. After that experience he re- turned to Rochester where he held the positions of teacher, counse- lor, and boys' adviser at john Mar- shall High School. He is a lecturer in geology at the University of Rochester. ln September of i946 he came to Charlotte High School as Vice- Principal. Since then he has be- come both a counselor and a sec- ond tather to boys and girls alike. The members of the Class of i953 proudly dedicate this Rain- bow edition of the Witan to Dr. james S. Wishart. CP1c11rl0TTe I ligh School 2 is -n -rv at N L Q x . ' ' ' YU- s 5 A s 5 f 3 N --...N A in V1 J - W4 W V Ml 'T i iy . .S '-w..,kmL W Q, E L H, W... They also realize that ignorance breeds misunderstand- ing, suspicion, fear, and hate. These things must be overcome if the people of the world are to live peaceably to- gether. With the help of the United Nations and the American Field Service, the Rochester section of the Association of Teen Age Diplomats has been able to place fourteen boys and girls from vari- ous other countries in American homes. lngerid Jacobsen, of Oslo, Norway, has spent the school year 1952-1953 with Walk together, talk together, Oh Ye Peoples of the earth: Then, shall ye know one another and have This saying is the heart of the Association for Teen-Age Diplomats. Friends From Across the Seo Eva Maria Graf, now living with her aunt and uncle in Ro- chester, came to the United States from Zella-Mehlis, a small town in the Eastern Zone of Germany. She came to further her education and to make her home here. Eva is a post graduate at Charlotte. Living in the United States, she will help create international friendship and a realization that we are all neigh- bors and that we all have common goals in life. What better diplomat could any nation have? Eva is considering becoming a nurse. Hanna Werk came to the United States to live with her father in Rochester. She is enrolled in Charlotte as a post graduate. Coming from Berlin, Germany, Hanna is well acquainted with the problems her native land faces. Germany, a land divided between Communistic and Democratic followers, is truly repre- sentative of the current world struggle. She will be instrumental in the promotion of better understanding between the old world and the new. Hanna is planning to become a nurse. We Bow THE WITAN 1920-1953 ln 1920 when the original Witan Staff was appointed, the name was chosen from a list of sixty suggestions submitted by the C. H. S. stu- dents. lt means the Elders or the wise coun- selors, and the publication was originally, through its editorial pages, a policy or opinion forming agency. This phase of its activity was taken over by the Student Council when it was organized a year or two later. At first The Witan was issued six times a year as a literary magazine and the Yearbook was a separate publication, each year with a different name such as The Aurora, The Elite, etc. ln 1924 the two were merged and published four times a year, the January and the June issues being senior numbers. For ten years this policy was in effect, but in 1934 the expense of publication was mounting so high that the January and June Classes put out a joint yearbook. lln 1920-30 the cost of the annual ranged from S300 to 5350. The Rainbow Edition ll953i is costing about i'p2500.i Methods of financing have been many and diverse. The senior candy sale, originally under- taken to meet our annual S50 pledge to The Memorial Scholarship Fund, became so lucra- tive that the surplus was turned over to The Witan, as were also the proceeds of the annual senior play. Our present Co-op method is a much better plan. At this point Mr. Lee and l terminate our thirty-three years of direct association with The Witan, we shall never lose our interest in its welfare or the memories of the fun and headaches we have shared with fifty-one staffs. Above is a list of fifty-one editors who have headed those staffs and on three occasions won second or third rank in our class in the Columbia National Scholastic Press Conference. -- Joyce E. Sharer If they've done all that for you, WHAT have they done for mel John W. Lee Mr. john W. Lee Being one of the advisers for the Witan has been, to me, one of the outstanding features of my years at Charlotte High School. Meeting and working with the different groups has always been something to look forward to. It has been a pleasure, always, to work with these young people and watch their develop- ment in the mysteries of producing a yearbook and to watch their careers during the years that followed, because it seemed that this experience was but a stepping-stone to something better. I look back on many happy years as co-adviser to the Witan staffs of the past, and wish for my successor many just as happy yea rs in the future. - John W.
