A century, the greatest, is half gone Fifty years of waiting for dawn of day - Our day has come - and we are going away. We shall return to you, Charlotte, it's true But on the day we end our senior year, Walk through that door into a strange new life You will belong to still another group To share their joy and fear of age-old strife. There remains only one of you, Charlotte, To mind both names and faces in each class. You will forget us as we try for our Varied fame before many days shall pass. The memories of which we speak differ In hearts of both the bold and meek, the gay, The sad, and those who think the world is m ad. But we all, whenever we think of you, Will doubly try to make our dreams come true You've seen us through the trying years of youth, Have tried to teach us what is wrong and truth For you have nursed our adolescent fears, Begun to mold experience of years Into decent careers of fruitful life. We know that our learning has just begun, But your part is finished, for we must go. Wait, though, allow us just a few words more., Before you push us through that opened door As the sand grains seep through the hourglass And time passes endlessly by, We, the 1950 class, from our hearts Without further ado, hereby present The Witan, Charlotte, our tribute to you. 9 dedieaiien, in nur friend and adviser, mr. lee Wfe dedicate this book, you see, To the one and only Mr. Lee Whose patience, skill and right good will Have helped the staff, its joh to fill. And for the dances, tending door, He does his share, oh, even more. And pausing now and then for fun - Within our hearts he's number one. Y John W. Lee Mr. Lee was graduated from Dansville High School, then went on to Buffalo Normal School. He took extension courses at Mechanics Insti- tute, University of Rochester, Eastman School of Music, and Syracuse University. He served his printer's apprenticeship on the Dansville Express, in Dansville, New York. In 1917 Mr. Lee joined the teaching stall' at Charlotte. He was the only shop teacher, teach- ing printing and drafting. To add to his school duties, he conducted the school orchestra and until 1920 printed the school paper and the Annual. From the time Mr. Lee came here, he has enthusiastically, tirelessly, and unsel- fishly worked for the good of the students and the school. , JH' Hlmnk wap principal Glenkrz M. Wlshart, Vzce-Prmczpal W Mg i, X 1 Richard Newman in omemuriam RICHARD NEWMAN FEBRUARY 3, 1932 - NOVEMBER 27, 1948 We of the senior class pause in the excite- ment of our graduation, to pay tribute to the memory of our classmate, whose gregariousness and willingness to do his share will be an influ- ence through our lives. Dick was graduated from our group by God, one and one-half years ago. Though he will not take his last step with our class, we have never really lost him. JAMES MARION NOVEMBER 16, 1935 - NovEMBER 7, 1949 The death of James Marion, a member of the class of 1953, shocked and saddened the student body and teachers of Charlotte High School. Kcoi ms through the years September of 1944 is an outstanding month in the memory of most of us. Wihy? ln that month we, the class of 1950, entered Charlotte High School. Yes, the long awaited day had arrived when we were to step up from grammar school big shotsi' to inexpe- rienced high schoolers. As we sat in the auditorium listening to Mr. Eddy's welcoming speech, we were awed by the immensity of the building. Our first few days we spent getting ourselves lost in the dark 'idungeonsw of the basement looking for the locker- rooms, climbing fabulous stairways that led nowhere, and traveling endless halls. We were put up on the shelf from where we viewed the assembly programs and peppered our enemies below with spit balls and rubber erasers. We were disciplined for trying to sneak down the stair- way bearing the aggravating up only sign. At the end of our first year we had earned for ourselves rat- ings from the worst to the best of seventh grade classes to enter C.H.S. We were placed in permanent homerooms for the remainder of our days at Charlotte and instantly a feud between 110 and 108 arose. New teachers dotted the scene: Mr. Allen, Miss Deane, Mr. Halbleib and Miss Quinn, while the friendly smile of Mr. Clarence Allen of the Janitorial Staff was missing. Although the boys in the sewing classes threatened to go on strike, they managed to squeeze through the series of eight-week exploratory courses in hort, wood working, commercial, languages and home economics. John Marshall furnished us with a new vice-prin- cipal, Dr. Wishart, who immediately won the friend- ship of young and old. As we passed from the eighth grade and prepared to start the last four years of school, our principal and friend, George Emerson Eddy, retired after serving the Rochester Public Schools successfully for many years. We started the freshman year under the direction of our former vice-principal, now our principal, Mr. Glenn M. Dennison. Our class was enlarged by new arrivals from Holy Cross and Seneca Schools. Dick Wialton and Bob Myers were elected to the office of Junior High School President for fall and spring terms respectively, and little by little other class- mates were making their debuts into the various organizations that were open to us now that we were 9th graders. Gene Kintz returned to Charlotte to tutor the basketball team, and the athletes in our class made an initial appearance in Reserve Basket- ball. In June we went on the first of our two class trips to Cobourg with Mrs. Dale and Mrs. Collins chaperoning us, and we came back colder than an Eskimo's nose. Our second year of high school started off with a bang. The ever-popular Mr. Reifstack left Charlotte to go to Brighton, and he was replaced by the ener- getic Mr. Quenan, who was imported from Edison Tech. Our first day we were stopped dead with the task of writing the first of our annual friendly letters to Mrs. Morrison. We found our way to room 108 where some of us were to spend the next three years struggling across the Rhine, devouring the phony tales of the Gallic Wars, and trying to find out where Cicero hid his verbs. However, Norma Curtin, Joan Sprague, Bar- bara Windt, Joanne Butterfield, Barbara Cooper, Joan Meyers, Evelyn Wingate, Bill Friday, Bruce Gauch, Bill Howard, Ila Tuttle., and Nathan Yost, were rewarded at the 3-year end by receiving a Cum Laude. Evy Wingate and her egotistic friends of the opposite sex started a slanderous war of words that carried on until graduation. We were entertained in Plane Geometry by the fabulous lectures of Archimedes'i Barwald. In World History we learned from Mr. Miller that Mummy was a song made popular by Al Jolson. And, of course, now we attended the thrilling senior assemblies. On our second trip to Cobourg we sailed balloons from the rear of the boat, turned our staterooms inside out, engaged in a soaking squirt gun war and Ray Grosshans taught Margie Weller and Joyce Graham the techniques of dice handling. Everyone had a rare time. Our Junior year was very successful in that we accomplished a great deal. We elected Pat Parshall our class president, and sold popcorn fritters and programs at the basketball games, originated Club 15, and collected a dollar for class dues from every- one, thus, we were able to start the expensive senior year with a firm financial foundation. In November of that year we were stunned and saddened by the death of Richard Newman, one of our classmates. The quiet lad, friend of us all, will always remain with us in memory. We witnessed one of the most heated campaigns for Student Association President in many years, as Ted Collins passed out bubble gum and Bill Howard paraded in front of school with a billy goat and a brass band. Our school band became the best uniformed in the city when they received new cadet-style uniforms. The evening of May 27, 1949, was spent dancing to Continued on page 66 E231 N. Sewage 82 D. The teen can- teens netted 35400.00 to be used for the the 1949 yearbook. At the end of the year we presented Miss Goff, who was retiring, with a beautiful lapel watch. We were all glad that we were fortunate enough to have had her for American History. The year was closed with an all-day picnic to Web- ster Park. Our final year was started off by scattering Miss Doehleris homeroom members among the other three homeroomsg however, they were warmly wel- comed by Mrs. Denise, Miss Childs and Miss Deane. At our first senior class meeting Bill Friday was elected President, and plans were soon made for selling pencils, wrapping paper, and candy. On De- cember 26 we held our Senior Ball, in our big gym, with Eddy Blanchard and his band providing the down beat. The Witan staff, by this time, was well underway planning our yearbook. Joyce Graham was Editor-in- Chief. An operetta, G'The Mocking Birdf' was presented with ,Ioan Smith as the lead. An excellent perform- ance it was, too. During our stay here in Charlotte we have wit- nessed the completion of the world's greatest cycle of affliction, the dawn of the Atomic age, and the rise of the threatening black cloud of Communism. As we prepare to leave the familiar halls and faces of those who have been with us, we realize that if the world is as many million years old as we think it is, our crowded little era of six years has been but an instant of yesterday, and as our view of the world broadens, we see how important a role we may play in the world of tomorrow.
