20 It as the year 1959 and the last leg of the lourney back to the dlstrlct In which I spent the first elgh teen years of my life IS close at hand There IS a swlsh a roar and as If from nowhere an atomic powered LAKE TO BEACH AVENUE bus glides up to want motionless for my entrance As the doors of the bus shde open whom do I see but ROBY MAHRT In the drlvers seat As I pay my fare he assures we that driving a bus IS much safer than driving a motorcycle Hurdlmg a four foot white lme I find I am surrounded by my old schoolmates BEVERLY LERCH NORINE DESMITH DOROTHY FRANKLIN and LOUIS CLARK Deciding to tour the village of Charlotte together we step off the bus arm In arm As we stroll down the sux wide lanes of Lake Avenue we are astounded by the rapidity with which the Char Iotte village hos become a paradise of modern enter prlse All around us we see neon signs sngmfylng the wealth and prosperity of this great and growing center of actlvlty The first oblect that looms into sight IS our old alma mater Charlotte Hugh School Upon entering the building we are trampled by a thundering herd mad rush to catch the Toronto Supersonic Special As we puck ourselves up from the steps our attention ns attracted to a solemn ceremony In a quaint little ceme tery across the highway Venturing closer we witnessed a rltual for Sam GRISWOLD who attempted to lump the Stutson Street Bridge with his tame bear He tried to perfect the feat at which his Idol Sam Patch had failed Services were administered by the Rev Mr FRASER pastor of the local church KATHRYN FYFE and KATE GEREW are mourning the passing of their hero Contlnulng on our lourney we are welcomed by BETTY DILL owner of the Dull Pickle Factory She named GLORIA PFAHL MARJORIE SILLS and CAROL SCHIEFER as her chief plcklers and LOIS GAUCH and BARBARA HART as the controlling stockholders of the corporation Moving In the direction of St PRITCH ARDS Arena the home of the Charlotte Royals w noticed the qumtets name Inscribed on the programs sold by MERCEDES LEONARD and MARILYN KOES TER These sharp shooting lads STAN BUTZER MAT KRITCHEN TOM PATRICK JOHN STANDING and RALPH KIRBY compose the roster of the Royals This aggregation IS financially backed by tycoon NEIL PARSHALL monopolust of the Ontario Confectlonarnes Facing the street again we see YVONNE CASON JOAN HERMAN MONA CLARK and MARY STONE GRABER playing the modernized version of hop scotch A DECADE A colorful neon sign that flashes POOL WITH A PUR POSE designates the Charlotte Balluards now heredl tarnly owned by LODER BRYCE Movlng an to better our perspective we look over the shoulder of HERB CARBONE who has lust completed his weekly report on the parleys A shout of triumph reaches our audl tory nerves as HERMAN GRIEGER announces that Skip GREENE has lust won the third race at Churchill Downs RAY FOY leaves his billiard cue to collect his wmmngs and then lolns us on our escapade Our group then enters the Palr a dice Casmo owned and managed by Uruguays own TOM DES MOND A floor show IS gomg on with such notables participating as DICK WESTBURG and has Be Bop Band featuring the sweet trumpet of DICK BERNDT Also on the billing are THE JOHNSON SISTERS KATE NORMA and ARLENE top song styllsts of the year In the spotlight run by JUNE BOND and EDDIE MEYER are the favorite comic personalities Bud WRIGHT and Lou ALLEN Sharing the spotlight are the perennial favorites Burl MAKOWIECKI and KEITH BOWER with their syncopated song stylmgs bouncers TOM ROETHEL and BOB MCPHERSONJ we stand motionless lookmg for familiar names and places The first one to catch our eye IS a slgn stating Madame SECHRISTS Dancing School The elevator taking us up to the twelfth floor IS operated by PAT DEFELICE who once sand she always wanted to get up In the world PHYLLIS PERRIN and ESTHER SEEMAN greet us at the door to the dancing studao Ithey are studying ballet and are on their way to change their IIQIIISJ We are amazed to see DAVE DELANEY and ZIGGY BONEHAM gomg through a real hep num ber wlth dancing partners JOAN CORRIGAN and EILEEN HAUS We could plainly see why they enloyed their work After leaving the studio I left the group momen tarlly and wandered over to the MALCOLM Custard Stand where JULENE and MARGARET GURNEE are busily scooping custards for CAROL WELCH and MAL COLM ROBERTSON Before lomnng the rest of our party who are over vnsmng MORLEY TURPIN In his new pharmacy I went to see STAN Money Bags DETTMAN He had worked himself up to the pres: dentlal positron In the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve System STAN is busy counting money so I wont bother gomg nn now but I can see BOB MUR PHY his assistant giving orders to tellers LAURA VAHL and IRENE CLEMENTS ' - - n , - . . . . . ,, . . . . - I - I E I I I I ll ll o . n p I ' I ll Q 11 u n 1 ' I I I ll ' - - ' ll ' I I I ' I - I .
