CLASS ADVISERS M155 JOVI E SHARPR WALTFR W BINNPIT INJUNS BUT NO COWBOYS H By CLINTON BNRINFS Hzrrwmzz Seyeral summers ago the woodlands surrounding the rolling hills ot 38 42 and E ab Barnard became exhausted and we could no longer obtain the materiils necessary for further growth and deyelopment from these barren hunting grounds We were forced to find a new home so we picked up our wig wams slung the papooses on our backs and took the dangerous narrow Lake Axenue trail through the wilderness to the fertile mlley of Charlotte unior Hrgh School Here l1y a perfect land that seemed waiting to offer us all of rts resources for existence and our progress We settled down here in the fall and began to make wise prepara trons for the winter which we knew would bring a sexere cold test especully n anuary intermingle and form new friendships We sur yned the first three wrnters md learned many ot the lessons of n1ture rcxciled to us in the vegetltion 1nd 1 m1l hte of this beautiful xalley In 1 mccting in the longhouse Qroom osc rc o 1 l of tribes that had settled in the ulley He was a strong stalwart warrior known to the brayes of his tribe as Shooting Bull O Rorke We lned happily under his leadership 1nd made 1 great deal of progress until we were xisited with mis fortune during our fourth summer in this 1 1lley In the month of une we faced one of the great est trnals of our existence for 1 deyastating drought fell upon the land 1nd once again we were lorced to moxc on Miny of us sought refugc on 1 plltcui c1lled Senior High School bec 1usc of its terrific height Somc who were not wre arcd for such 1 tcst crd not surxnc to ac complny us We were not tl1e only ones affected by the drought 1 l in our 1scens1on to this plateau we were joined by tribes from Seneu 1nd Holy Cross We plunked our wrgw ams high on this windy hill 1nd took up our cryilization where we had lett off We were some time in that we had lrttle tune for outside actixitics After two summers ot h1rd work we finished building our clnoes 1nd cirying our totem poles and begin to hnd tnnc for pl1y 1nd other plc1s ures Many of our brucs pliycd g1mes md when they becunc quite skillful they competed with warriors from otl1er ullages but because wc were the smallest tribe we were not too success ful Howexer our clptiin No Tongue In Face Boyd made sure thlt we returned with our share of the scalps Some of the more social minded xillagers formed 1 Rurban Club so that they could sit in circles with squaws and brayes of Continued on page 58 9 A.
