The One Man Left Ahve By Wrtelam Dorsoeuen T was une 4 7019 ohn Cranch on arising found rt a loy ely day He was rt IS true 97 years old but a little thing like that did not bother Mr Cranch He had found a very pleasant means of spending the day H would go to the cemeteries Generally when people attain the adyanced age that Mr Cranch boasted of they customarily fight shy of grayeyards But to such an optimistic man as Mr Cranch graveyards were no worry He could strll yoke about them He started out Leaving his home Mr Cranch walked across the Gardner Memorial Park past the Vivien Gardner Monument to the Dorothea Shaw Memorial Cemetery From here he turned to Potter s Field The first grave he searched out was that of Padrarc Boyle At first there was some difficulty but finally rt was discovered in the corner with a neat tombstone which did not tell of the career that had made the name of Boyle famous in the annals of crime but contained instead but two he would Rest rn Peace Leaving Potters Field Mr Cranch found his way to where Mrs une McElwa1n ones and her seventeen children were burned Not far from there was the firemen s Memorial wrth the names of William Pum and George Wheten on rt Mr Cranch had intended to look up all those that had been in hrs high school class but alas he could not find therr gray es He thought of all those he had known Helmut Gebhardt who had made himself a fortune rn the differential gear shaft busr ness jack Huse a beachcomber at Tahiti Vernon Bishop who really had become a Bishop Nancy Connor social secretary to the Kmv of Slam ohn Ochs a seeond Diamond rm Brady all these drifted across his mind Nor could he forget Al Laleaye who had been such a splendid preacher Z4 Louise Hughes who trying to explore Darkest Africa had lost her way Robert Illsrnger who had seryed three years for brgamy nor Walter ustrce who had sentenced htm He was yolted out of these refieetrons when he saw the Donoghue Memorial Museum He was proud of the building William Hopkins had been the architect and oe Dey a sidewalk superrn tendent had been killed during its eonstrucnon by a crane lnsrde were kept exhrbrts sueh letters of the great Donoghue acre of ground Donoghue stood on shoe worn by Donoghue ete He came to Clemens Square and saw the Mar tyrs Monument He knew the inscription Here was foully murdered Dorothy Clemens rn the first year of the Amerrcin Reyolutron the first Patriot to dre for Freedom Mr Cranch knew what the monument did not say that the firing squad had been composed of Eyerett Garrison Dale lose Donald Dreher and LeRoy Kelso Mr Cranch felt himself yostled by some students rtal Setentlfic Library He watched them rush into the tall stately building with its motto Beauty ts Truth Truth Beauty Mr Craneh found the Oremus Memorial Prayer Meeting House plated between the Wentwortlm Slobbe Memorial Sewage Disposal Plant and a large factory bearing the name William Graxer Inc Telephone Poles Not far from there was the Lohwater Memorial Penitentiary and the Chamberlarn Home for Dis tressed Young Ladies He remembered the letter he had reeened many years ago from Lrford Bedrent Erford had married a rich woman and was ln mg on the fruits of her father s toil Erford sent news of people they had known inn Boyle who had died of apoplexy on hearing the returns from baragota of Catherine H I ll J 1 4' ' I s V lr ' J y . . 7 .
