To accomplish this, we hope to help people take pride in themselves, thereby learning to respect the worth and dignity of others, and, ultimately leading to students taking pride in their school, community and country. “We are also committed to helping to make school an enjoyable and rewarding experience for as many stu- dents as possible.” If we succeed then we will have accomplished our goal in helping students enter their life roles as responsi- ble, compassionate, contributing, and creative citizens.” 26 Faculty Secretaries Jacqueline Piper Attendance Faculty 27 Guidance 1 Department I Doug Moreau Darrell Cook Carol Barnes Gwen Knowlton 28 Faculty Laura Fuess Resource Room Art Dept. NHS Is Honorable The National Honor Society is a national organiza- tion sponsored by the National Association of Sec- ondary School Principals whose purpose is to honor the outstanding students throughout the United States. Members are chosen by the faculty and administration of each high school which sponsors a National Honor Society chapter. To be chosen, a student must display excellence in four areas — leadership, character, scholarship, and service. The annual induction of new members into the Charlotte chapter is an evening ceremony to which the par- ents of the new members are invited. This year, 38 new members were chosen. Activities 123 Exchange Students Olivia Kroeger was our exchange student from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Olivia came to the United States after she had won a scholarship from a com- pany where her mother worked, by a process of examinations and eliminations. Olivia arrived in Charlotte August 29, 1978, through Youth For Understanding. She lived with Mr. and Mrs. Allen Hunter. When asked if CHS was dif- ferent, Olivia said that they don't choose their own classes in Argentina and they don’t move from room to room. Olivia said that she liked Charlotte; it’s different, but nice. Alex Sill was our exchange student from Michel- stadt, West Germany. Alex came to the United States through a friend of the family who he lived with in Charlotte, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Copeland. Alex came to Charlotte August 23. When asked if CHS was different, Alex said the school system was different, and in Charlotte, you see more trees and bigger lawns. In West Germany, the houses are just a few feet from each other. Alex said he liked Charlotte; it’s a nice town and it has a different style. Ute Schaper was our exchange student from Ruhr, West Germany. Ute came to the United States after her mother saw an article in the newspaper about Youth For Understanding. She wrote for information, and soon was on her way to Charlotte. She lived with Mr. and Mrs. Gene Kyle. When asked if there were any differences, she said in West Germany there is an elementary school, a main school, a middle school and a high school. In order to go from one school to the next, they must pass tests. Ute said the people in Charlotte were friendly. 124 Activities Band, Take the Field! Girls' State Girls' State was designed to give young people a better understanding of the way government is run. Last year it took place at Olivet College between June 10 and June 17. At Girls' State there were approxi- mately 500 girls, and each girl was assigned to be in a city. There were 21 imaginary cities and each consisted of 24 girls. The cities were then divided into counties and these counties consisted of three cities each. Each person at Girls’ State was encouraged to run for an office, either in city, county, or state government. To get elected to an office, a person would have to make speeches and campaign for votes. Tammy Ulrich and Jan Ferguson Boys' State The Boys’ State participants, Chris Line and Greg Smith, were chosen to go to Boys’ State by the American Legion after their parent's submitted their names for consideration. They were also selected for their scholastic and athletic activities. Like the girls, the guys were instructed to organize a state by rallying votes to win elections, run the government, and make laws. In addition, the week-long convention involved visiting the respective offices they were elected to. The governor went to Gov. Milliken’s office and the county seat electee, to the courthouse. Both Greg and Chris agree that the latter was the best part. Chris Line and Greg Smith 136 Activities Swim Club First Row: Ann Goelz, Jan Reed, Faith Skidmore, Julie Williams, Debbie Bugbee. Schools must offer driver education to stu- dents under 18 years old, but students must be at least 15 years old to enroll. Students who pass the course receive a certificate which allows them to become licensed drivers and which generally reduces their automobile insurance rates. The Charlotte driver education department issues about 350 such certificates each year. 142 Activities Ski Club Picks Up Speed This year Ski Club had over 175 members. A soldier one day, a policeman the next. Even the President. A space captain speeding through the universe, or a pirate invading another 's ship. There, too, were dreams of real life. Dreams of growing and becoming rich. Or powerful. Or famous. These and less thoughts went rolling through the mind frequently, being anything, everything. Living in your own little dream world. These were happy times, times of school, play, no worries, no responsibilities. As you grew older, you dreamed less and less. The real world became more real, and you found yourself looking to the earthly pleasures and problems that crept up on you. These teen years were spent experimenting with new things: work, sex, booze. Adolesence went quickly by, along with the feelings everyone has why am I here, what good am I, how do I fit in? As you grew older still, you became more involved in the problems facing you and less in the pleasures spent m teenhood. Job security, inflation, crime — all seeming too much to handle. Wanting everything for your children and your mate, but never having enough Your middle age was engulfed in worries of growing children and the “What-am-l-going-to-do-when-l-retire?-l- won ’t-have-enough-money syndrome. Struggling along, trying to make ends meet. As you grew older still, you approached old age and things became brighter. Your future life wasn 't as long now, but you were better off financially: your grandchildren came to visit their grandparents, and retirement was coming up. Your plans after work ended included travel, going places you'd always wanted to go. As you grew older still, your death came near. Your loving, lifelong mate had died, you were lonely, abandoned, a burden to your family. Senility crept up. Your children, whom you had loved and cared for for so long, whom you spent your mid-age years breaking your back to get a decent home for, didn't want to be bothered by a senile old man. So you were put in a home for the elderly, corailed together, with others like you. And senility was merciful, and came to your lonely mind. And you were a boy again, dreaming of all the things you never accomplished in your long, hard life. You were again young, running, playing, no worries, no responsibilities, having fun, chasing girls, all of youth's pleasures. And all the while sitting in a chair, in a corner, by yourself, all alone. And one morning you died. With a smile on your face from the dreams you were dreaming, but all alone. And your family came to your funeral and cried. Because they loved you. Nothing but madness. Where are we going? Why are we afraid? What are we showing, for the price we have paid? We try to forget today, and live for tomorrow. Remembering to say, We need no more sorrow. Someone is born today, tomorrow someone will die. To ourselves we must say, Someday will I? The future we can't see. But if we could, The things we'd see, would be nothing good. What will tomorrow bring? Will anyone smile? What cam tomorrow bring? Anything worthwhile? There is no meaning to the life we know. Nothing to keep believing, Nowhere to go. And yet, I know what the future will bring. So let me show the reason I sing. The last enemy will die, And we will pray. For all these, we will cry, former things have passed away. And then no one will cry. No reason to be sad. No one will die. No reason to be mad. This is just a scene in my mind. And yet it's true. Something we can find, something for me and you! Its overall accomplishments included an 11-1 dual record, 7-0 in conference play, culminating with an undis- puted league championship. From this champion- ship team, two golfers were honored by being chosen to the all-league team, senior Dave Briggs and junior Dan Gregory. The team finished the season with a 3rd place in the regionals and a 10th place finish in the state meet. During the season, new 18-hole and 9-hole records were achieved, 314 for 18 and 146 for 9. Another personal achievement was gained by Dave Briggs, having the distinction of being the first CHS golfer to be chosen for All-State honors.
