m Sit CHA RHIA N Volume 3H Advisor Alfrava Latham F-ililor Steve Wildcrn I ‘MISTER D’ 373,7 7' C C, 9 70 It is with great apprecia- tion that the Charhian class would like to dedicate the 1970 Char hi an to a man whom all the students trust and respect —a man who fought for and accomplished the change in the English curriculum at CHS. Be- fore this change, the students were forced to take the basic English 1 through English 4 classes, something all the stu- dents seemed to dread. This new program permitted the stu- dents to select not only the quantity but also the type of English courses they could take. We, the students of CHS, say thanks to Mr. David Dickin- son by dedicating the 1970 Charhian to him. DEDICA TED TO . . . MR. DA VID DICKINSON Mr. Dickinson, father of three, has headed the English Department for the past five years. He has been the Freshman Class advisor for several years, during which he acquired the name Mr. D.” He graduated from Bob Jones University in South Car- olina with a B.S. degree in English. 2 ira The eager faces of the underclassmen are ever present along with the faces of the accom- plished seniors. The mood of fa-IS is ever- changing, and the 1970 CHARHIAN staff has tried to capture both the good and the bad moments of the past school year. — EL WOOD LARSEN Superintendent Always busy and very ded- icated to our school system best describes Mr. Elwood Lar- sen. This is his fourth year in the Charlotte Public School Sys- tem. His many responsibilities are setting up the yearly bud- get, hiring and negotiating with teachers, and coordinating pol- icies set up by the school board. His improvements in the school system are welcomed by every- one in the community. MALCOLM GO BEL 6 Assistant Principal As assistant principal for CHS, Mr. Gobel runs a tight schedule enabling him to fulfill many respon- sibilities. The majority of his time is spent record- ing daily attendance al- though he is always will- ing to lend a helping hand elsewhere. Mr. Gobel has assumed the job as our athletic director for 35 years. During those years he coached Oriole football with a grand total of 127 wins, 51 losses, 8 ties, 11 conference championships. For coaching the cross country team for the past few years Mr. Gobel has received 2 state champion- ships. This being Mr. Go- bel's last year at CHS, he has been honored by the naming of the football field after him, Malcolm J. Gobel Field. ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP . . . JAMES H. CHAMPION As principal Mr. Champion's main interest lies in the students of CHS. He is always understanding in student and faculty problems. He tries to bring out better student and teacher relationships. Mr. Champion keeps the school operating efficiently and in good condition. Some of his duties include handling discipline, scheduling classes, scheduling extra activities, and working with teachers. 7 SCHOOL BOARD APRO ACHES END Seated left to right are Mr. Jack Young, Mr. Bruce Bryan, Mr. Bud Squibb, Mr. Carl Schroth. ' '3 113 STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM CITED AS ‘GREAT, MEMORABLE, UNFORGETTABLE, ADVENTUROUS’ I spent the summer in Hoorn, Netherlands, with the DeVries fam- ily and one other American boy. We went all over Holland and to East and West Berlin. Europeans are most friendly and my most memorable experience was having the chance to meet and discuss dif- ferent topics with them. I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for me to be an exchange student. It is a great program, a great experience and most reward- ing. I spent my summer vacation in Finland, half of the time in the city and the other half at a summer cottage by the Baltic Sea. I’m never going to forget my trip and all the people I met. I’ll never forget all my adventures and experiences: es- pecially eating fish-head soup! I spent my summer in Quezon City, the capital of the Philippines. My most memorable experience was seeing a pig being slaughtered and being offered some fresh pig’s blood soup. I sincerely recommend that anyone who has a chance to take such a trip, do so. Your memories would be uncountable, not to men- tion all life long friends that would be made. I stayed with the Anderegg fam- ily in Meiringen, Switzerland. The sightseeing, the conversation with people and the adventure of being independent are what I appreciated most. The thing I liked most about staying there was it had such a relaxing easy going pace. 114 GIRLS’ STATE Melanie Littich, Gloria Grier, and Carol Chapman were the three girls chosen to attend the Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary Girls’ State held every June. Putting on mock state conventions and elections were part of the week’s activities. Learn- ing all the tricks of political par- ties, partaking in political wheeling and dealing, and attending state meetings kept the girls busy all the time. STUDENTS LEARN FROM POLITICAL WHEELING AND DEALING BOYS’ STATE The 52nd annual Wolverine Boys’ State was held for an eight-day period during mid-June of 1969. Richard Bear- up, Clark Ballard, and Bill Chenoweth were the three boys chosen to attend. The purpose of Boys’ State is to orient and acquaint prospective senior boys in the workings of government, particularly that government of the State of Michi- gan. The prime interest while at Boys’ State was centered on campaigning for elective offices, these offices ranging from city councilman to governor of the state. 115 LESREVEURS BOTTOM ROW: Mrs. Sue Fisher, Terry Pray, president; Terry Williams, vice president; Dave Lautzenheiser, sec- retary; Jane Clemens, treasurer; Mar- tha Vanderstow, historian. The purpose of the wrestling club is to give boys who don’t wrestle a chance to learn about wrestling. Activities of the club this past year were selling candy and tickets to meets which later allowed them to purchase new wrestling uniforms. They also held a tournament which eight schools attended. Only 9th and 10th graders participated. 119 MR. POWELL The Oriole Band, now in their 25th year under the direction of Mr. Robert Powell, remains outstanding throughout the district and the state. Again this year the band plans on attending the Virginia Beach Band Festival plus sight seeing in Washington, D.C. Candy sales, a turkey dinner, the Annual Band Bounce and public concerts help raise funds for attendance at state and district festivals.
