A .. 1 Charhian Published by CHARHIAN Staff of Charlotte High School Charlotte, Michigan Vol. 37 Alfrava Latham, Advisor The high school years pass all too soon. One year fades into another and we have found one more activity to occupy our extra minutes. Here we present some of those joyous moments that came to students this year. W I 2 3 Proudly We Dedicate The 1 969 CHARHIAN To Mr. Ron Schultheiss For his many hours as a teacher, a coach, and a true friend, the staff honors this great guy with the dedication for the 1969 CHARHIAN. The friends Mr. Schultheiss has made with the students are in- numerable. His ability as a coach to make athletes out of boys goes unsurpassed. His abilities put him high above others and rank him high on the list of favorite CHS teachers. 5 Farewell, Class Of LXIX I’m really going to miss you people.” Julie . . . now Julie, don’t be up- set.” Graduation is nearly here. The Class of ’69 will soon depart but will leave many fond memories. This page is de- voted to the Class of LXIX. Long may they live and keep hangin' in there! The Senior Artists Gar, Jeffrey Will, Gross and Barb K FACULTY • „ ADMINISTRATION d 9 MR. ELWOOD LARSON—Superintendent As superintendent of the Charlotte School System, Mr. Elwood Larsen assumes the great deal of loyalty and energy needed to fulfill his position. He has been with us for three years and continues to do an excellent job with his responsibilities. Mr. Larsen works in cooperation with the School Board and coordinates the policies they set. ADMINISTRATION: steady hanc directior MR. JOHN SMITH—Assistant Superintendent Mr. John Smith has spent much of his time within the walls of the Charlotte School System. Twenty years ago he started as principal and taught math and social studies along with Latin. Now he remains a dedicated man as assistant superintendent to Mr. Elwood Larsen. 10 a of MR. JAMES CHAMPION—Principal Always busy, always interested—Mr. Cham- pion keeps CHS operating smoothly and ef- ficiently—yet he seems to find time to lend an understanding hand in faculty and student problems. He works throughout the summer improving our curriculum by assigning teachers to areas they are best qualified for. Yet, his main interest lies in the well being of the student body. MR. MALCOLM GOBEL—Assistant Principal Keeping a busy schedule, Mr. Gobel gives his valuable assistance in the expanding re- sponsibilities of the administration. He spends a great deal of his time recording daily attendance along with handling disci- pline. Mr. Gobel is athletic director for all sports and takes time out as cross country coach. Mr. John Smith’s Secretary—MRS. LORRAINE ALLEN Mr. Elwood Larsen’s Secretary—MRS. EVELYN FISCHER School Accountant—MR. ROGER HALIFAX MR. ELDRED TOUTANT Community School Director I? School Board Dedicates Time Responsible for the administration in the Charlotte School System is our SCHOOL BOARD. Very few realize the time and criticism involved in being a board member. These men must leave their work and families whenever a meeting is called and if involved they stay until 1 or 2 in the morning. Currently the problem of our growing student population and the need for new schools occupy much of the Board’s time. To solve a portion of this, new high school will be built and hopefully in use by January, 1970. The 1968-69 Charlotte SCHOOL BOARD members (seated from left to right) are President, MR. E. J. YOUNG; Treasurer, MR. BRUCE M. BRIAN; Secretary, MR. C. L. SQUIBB; Trustee, MR. D. E. HAINES; (standing) Trustee, MR ROBERT W. JOHNSON; Trustee, MR. WILLIAM W. WHITE; Trustee, MR. For them, the meetings and festivities have come to a close. No more will they partici- pate in the various assemblies, worry about their initiations, or anticipate the announcement of officers. Even though the seniors have college and a new life to look forward to, they will still reminisce their years at CHS. The underclassmen, however, can still look ahead to the year when they are seniors and all the memories yet to be made. The seniors wrll leave, another class will move in to take their place and a new year will begin. 70 Spirit And Hopes . . . They also hold the title of being the most organized club in Charlotte High School. This year they sold Christmas trees as their main money-making project. They also sponsored a dance to help finance their activities for the year. 128 The president og F.F.A., Keith Tirrell, explains to the club the plans for the coming year. Students from CHS take time from their study periods twice a week to cadet teach at one of the surround- ing elementary schools. They find this experience very rewarding and in- formative. Although some of these students never become teachers, they are better young men and women for their experience. The officers of F.T.A. include Sharon Bradley, president; Pat Wolodko, vice- president; Chris Ford, secretary; Debby Vale, treasurer; Cathy Bogner, publicity; Malinda Rolfe, historian. 129 INSTRUCTORS: Tom Gardner Steve Curtice Reynols Leonard Buzz Shaull Steve Wildern John Swanson Charlo-Skiers Organize And Hope Dave Toutant Sue Yates Jill Braden Debbie Attwell Kent Wildern Becky Moehring For Another Year . . . At Michi- gan State, the boys from Charlotte proved to be interested in their work. The girls, who attended the University of Michigan, also made a great showing. CHS is proud of her young politicians! During a mock take over of our school, these seasoned pol- iticians occupied Mr. Cham- pion’s office just long enough to take this picture. Club meetings, projects, the play, sponsoring dances, and all the various functions have filled the CHS activity calendar this year. Not to be forgotten are academics. Hours of studying back up those stu- dents who made the honor roll. Now, as the year comes to a close, we can look back to the past and to memories but we can also look ahead to the future and hope that when tomorrow finally comes, today will hold priceless memories. 4 TTld ia 208 Editor—1969 CHARHIAN t 3 r.
