THE 19M-5 EDITOR: Rosalie Smith ADVISOR: Alfrava Latham ;a This year was 1 year. We studied, he same as any high school 1 fun, and experienced sad mo- ments. There were games, dances, and moments of glory for some of us. We all shared the hopeless re- ality of examinations, deadlines, semester grades, and the noontime cafeteria line. These things were only a few that were packed into this year. The credit for this book goes to the CHARHIAN Staff. However, the Staff has only furnished the out- lines for the story which follows. The rest was up to you. The Underclass who return to CHS in the fall will continue the high standards of our school and strive for improvement. Graduates will go their sep- arate ways using the knowledge they gained here. It is not today you will appreciate the CHARHIAN. Tomorrow, when it is not so easy to think back to 1965, you will treasure the memories this book has stored for you. 4 Contents • • • Faculty Underclass Activities Sports Seniors Advertisers Dear Seniors: Yoo will turn these pages many times in the future years and I am sure that each time you will have many pleasant memories of your school days. I am also certain that as you read this in future years you will continue to appreciate that education is more than the three R's ________ that knowledge gained from the classroom Is useful only when It helps you to weign ideas and make decisions on the job, in the home, and at the polls Your thirst for knowledge has helped us give you a foundation for this decision-making. For many years I have been proud of Charlotte high school students. We have always had more than our share of sincere scholars and respected citizens, and I am sure that you will agree that the success of any school system rs due not only to dedicated teachers but also to enthusiastic stu- dents. J. Berghorst (far right and center above). Mr. and Mrs. Norman Goodling (right) assisted the Junior Class with technical direction. Assistant to the Director was Christine Umbarger (left above). The hours of preparation that en- tail presenting a three-act play were shared by many committees in addition to the cast. These hours were profitable because the memory of a successful play will remain with the Junior Class. Activities Student Council The constant link between the administration and stu- dent body is the well-organized and efficient Student Council. Working with the administration, the Council carries out numerous decisions on school affairs and presents new projects to the students. It also is a sound- ing board for the problems and gripes” confronting both the faculty and students. The Student Council is truly the voice” of the school. Al- though his main job is heading the Student Council, as the official representative to the student body Sid also must maintain the high standards required of one in his position. Pleas- ant and efficient, he is not only highly regarded among his classmates but in the community as well. 60 Secretary As Secretary of the Student Council, Linda Bradley serves the student body well. Not only must she take complete and accurate minutes of the Student Council meetings, but she, like Sid, must also officially represent the school. •Linda has proven herself a strong and capable leader and does much to increase respect for the school in the community and elsewhere. 61 Girls' State Attending Girls' State were, left to right, Jane Fletcher, Nancy Squibb, and Christy Baird. They were sent by the American Legion Auxiliary in June to participate in the activities at the University of Michi- gan and there learned much about local and state government. Christy was chosen by the entire Girls’ State body to be an alter- nate representative to Girls' Nation held in Washington, D. C. It is certain the girls will always remember the honor of attending and the many friends they made. Boys' State Several service clubs sent junior boys to Boys' State at Michigan State Uni- versity last June. The boys were, seated, Greg Gilding, Norm Reed, Mike Har- vey, John Lord, Doug Flower, and standing, Sid Weseman, Ivan Wood- hams, and Jerry Roiter. Not pictured is Ron Rohlfs. Role-playing local and state representatives, the boys gained much knowledge of their government and how it functions. Boys’ State is an event they will always remember. 62 National Honor Society FIRST ROW: Sue Phillips, Treasurer; Pat Bearup, V. President; Sherry Porter, President; 'Sue Fhaner, Secretary. Any sophomore boy who participates in sports is encouraged to join. A member breaking training rules may be brought before the entire group and eventually lose his membership. The club should certainly be commended for its high ideals. GAGE HASKINS President ERIC WILMORE V. President BOB MOHR Sec.-Treas. BILL ROGERS Sgt. at Arms 65 Charlotte Oriole Band Probably the best organized organization in the school, the Charlotte Oriole Band has received high honors and awards and is highly regarded throughout the state and the nation. President SUE PHILLIPS Sec.-Treas. CHRISTY BAIRD Historian Contributing most to the enjoyment of the entire school is the Footlighteers drama club. The several plays and assemblies produced by the club provide entertainment for the student body and valuable acting experience for the members. Not only do the students acquire self-confidence on the stage, but they also learn the arts of stage direction and design, make-up, and public” speaking. STANDING: Ed Robbins, Jerry Vinson, Tim Cain. NOT PICTURED is Jeff Barnett. One of the more complicated jobs of the stage crew is to keep the stage lighting in good condition and to arrange lighting for the different assemblies. Here Tom Homan “throws a switch.” The stage crew always has an important part in the production of a play or assem- bly. They are often in charge of many things, including lighting, “curtain cues,” props, and set decoration. Here Jim Mc- Manus and Ron Wright are ready for their 72 Audio Visual Aid The A.V.A. department is in charge of the maintenance of all projectors, record players, etc. Seen here at that task are Chuck Rice, Ron Granger, and Bob Sprague. All equipment from the A.V.A. room must be accounted for at all times. Here are Ron Wright, Tom Homan, Jim McManus, and an unknown with the opaque pro- jector, a machine that is nearly always in use. Students in A.V.A. not only serve” but also learn; for example, they learn the proper way to splice film. Here Mr. Sutton instructs Dennis Nisse as Jim Garrison and Darryl Baxter look on. Almost every French-speaking’' student at C.H.S. has at one time or another been a member of Les Reveurs. Not only does the club offer its members a chance to put their French to practical use, but also helps them to learn more about French speaking nations and peoples. Marg is an eight-year member of the band, where she plays both the flute and the piccolo. In ad- dition to band Marg is a member of the National Honor Society and the Ski Club. After school Marg works at the office of two local dentists, Dr. Byland and Dr. Gager. In her spare time Marg enjoys knitting, skiing and cooking. Having been accepted at the University of Michigan, Marg plans to study foreign languages and later to become an interpreter. After school Marg works at the office of Drs. Byland and Gager, while at home she relaxes by playing the piano. Salutatorian of the class of 1965 is Bruce Hammer- berg, whose average over his high school years is 3.8717. A five-year member of the band, Bruce has also partic- ipated in Les Reveurs, DeMolay, National Honor So- ciety, and the Methodist Youth Fellowship. A well rounded boy, well liked by classmates, Bruce enjoys hunting and fishing, as well as reading. Majoring in biochemical engineering, Bruce will study at the Uni- versity of Michigan. 124 C.H.8. Top Students Sharing the distinction of valedictorian this year is Pat Bearup. Long hours of hard work are represented in the 3.9459 average which Pat has accumulated over her four year high school span. But, beside working long hours on home- work, Pat has participated in many extra curricular activities such as band, National Honor Society, Les Reveurs, Pep Club and Ski Club. Pat’s work as a laboratory aide at the local hospital also occupied a great deal of her time. Pat has been accepted at the University of Michigan to study medical tech- nology and psychology. Always busy is Pat Bearup, whether working to meet a Charhian deadline or working as a laboratory aide at the hospital. Salutatorian Bruce Hammerberg finds that studying constitutes a major part of his time.
