Students Prepare in Vocational Studies tfv in f . 6 The steadfast training in vocational skills given to Charlotte students was twofold in purpose: first, so they may earn a living in an efficient and satisfy- ing manner, second, to create a strong economic foundation for the community and nation alike. Through the background obtained in C.H.S. students were prepared to fit into community positions. Then, h a v i n g mastered the basic skills, they expected to find more advanced techniques easier to learn. The scientific program of C.H.S. was put to the proficiency test as the word science resounded throughout the world. Physics, chemistry, and math became subjects of conversation overnight, and rightfully so. Overhead, Russia's first man-made sat- ellite cast solemn admonishments to the American public for their lack of scien- tific accomplishments. The launching ol' this sphere caused Z1 renewed emphasis on the C.H.S. aca- demic program as teachers and students became conscious of Russia's growing skills. Charlotte ranked high in the profic- iency test as it proved to be above the national average in its science and math curriculum. 7 '4l,. lx , im
