The play takes place in an old peoples’ home where the old people have almost given up hope of ever being young and lively again. A tramp, Oliver Erwenter, supposed to be 77 years old, comes to live there. Erwenter, discovers that the old people in the home have nothing to live for. He decides to help them find youth and happiness. A romantic triangle, an old lady who likes her bottle, and another tramp go together to make this play humorous and believable. Juanita Ball and Richard Wilkinson gaze hopefully at Paul Potter as Dawn Howard ignores the situation around her in a scene from “The Silver Whistle.” Junior play, The Silver Whistle, Seated (L. to R.): Richard Wilkinson, Ellen Fenn, Juanita Ball, Cathy Atkins, Janet Rose, Denny Kloko, Barbara Carr Standing: Dawn Howard, Gordon Bust, David Hoedeman. Mr. Powell, at left, and his assistant, Mr. Mead. Attention! About face! These orders are often heard when our marching band is practicing. The year 1955-56 is a busy one for the Oriole Band. In August the students attend Band Camp for a week of hard work and play. The beginning of the school year finds the band working hard on the many shows to be presented during the foot- ball season. Besides a joint concert at Bucyrus, Ohio, the band participates in the Holland Tulip Festival. This year for the first time, the Oriole Band is going to the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D. C., as the official band of Michigan. The annual Band Bounce, assem- blies, and Solo Ensemble Contests are a few of the many other activities of the band. Field Marshal Dennis Kloko and Drum Major Karl Wirt work hard to perfect the techniques of the marching band. Barb Carr, Judy Bennett, and Sharon Raymond proudly display their new majorette uniforms. Les Mousquetaircs meets every other Friday during the sixth period to learn about the customs of France. One of the main events of the year is the Annual French Ban- quet with French food and pro- gram. Another, in February, is a Valentine party. In the spring the club participates in a festival of French poetry and drama at Ypsilanti. With the aid of a Ford Founda- tion Scholarship, Miss Hughes, studying the languages and cus- toms of our foreign neighbors, traveled throughout Spain and France. The knowledge gained on this trip is a big asset to our students. Judy Potter, president of Los Amigos, calls the meeting to order every other Wednesday noon. Much fun is had at a Christmas party with a pinata as the center of the games; in the spring they have a Spanish Banquet, and in May the whole club goes to Ypsilanti. The other officers: Vice-presi- dent Shirlev Dean, Secretary JoAnn Gobel, and Treasurer Tamara Shirelv help Judy make this club fun for all the members. Bill, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale W’enger, was born on October 9, 1938. His brother Norman is now a Junior at CHS, and Uene, his sister, graduated in 1954. Bill was an all-round athlete and well liked by all who knew him. As one senior so warmly put it, “His heart was of gold and his ability to put forth a smile never ceased.” Even though he departed from his family and us on December 6, 1953, the memory of his radiant personality will always ring true in our hearts and minds. 124 Autographs We are proud of our JOELLEN BONHAM Director's Award (band) JACKIE CARTER Library RONALD CONVERSE FFA Leadership DIANE COX Scholarship DUANE DAVIDSON DcKalb Award (FFA) CARL FIELD Service SANDRA GONSER GAA Leadership JUDY HENRY Service KATHY JAMES LEONE LOCKE Dramatics Citizenship JERRY McKAY Activities JOHN MUMA Leadership JO ANN PERRY KEITH REYNOLDS KARL WIRT Commercial Library Arion Award (band) Citizenship Dramatics These merchants wish to congratulate students who were selected by the faculty and their fellow students to receive the honor awards named below the person’s picture. 1 CHARLOTTE FROZEN FOOD LOCKERS JOE BONHAM NEWLAND’S GROCERY SEARS ROEBUCK AND COMPANY SELF-SERVE LAUNDRY SMITH AND OSBURN STRECKS-ALD INSURANCE AGENCY YATES HARDW ARE A typical after school gathering finds Mary Es- ther King, Jo- ellen Bonham, Carl Field, and Jerry McKay enjoying a coke at BEHREN’S and ROWE DRUG STORE, 143 S.
