endrng up second place rn the Caprtol Crrcurt To start the year the Isaacmen won therr frrst game by downrng Hastrngs 48 36 Unable to get started the frrst half Charlotte gave Hastrngs a two pornt lead whrch they easrly snapped rn the thrrd perrod outscorrng Hastrngs 18 to 7 Hans Kardel dunked in srx freld goals and two free throws to set the pace for Charlotte wrth 14 pornts Sparks and Gammage followed pushrng ten pornts Hastrngs scored 13 Next the Orroles traveled to Everett where they lost a very thrrllrng yet heartbreakrng game At the close of the frrst quarter the score was 15 to 8 wrth the Vrkrngs ahead Wrth Kardel and Sparks hrttrng rn the second quarter the Orroles pulled up to a 17 to 17 tre at half trme In the thrrd perrod both teams fought hard for the lead and frrrally the Vrkrngs dren ahead for a 24 23 edge The fourth quarter went along lrke the rest of the game wrth each team frght mg hard but when the frnal whrstle blew the Isaacmen had lost by one pornt 37 36 Wrn Agarn The Orange and Black boys took on Howell next The game was played on Charlottes court whrch may have been an advantage be cause the frne feathered Orroles ended on the long end of a 57 26 score The next game was what Co lr Elkrn Isaac thought the best game of the year The opponent was ta hrghly rated Marshall team VI Isaac commented that the boys played good ball all through the game although they drd lose by a close 41 to 37 score Wrtlr Charlotte nettrng twenty srx of thrr ty seven foul shots the Orroles beat Lakevrew rn a non conference game 44 to 28 The Spartans h1t from the fl00l rnakrng twelve freld goals whrle the Isaacmen made nrne but for orrfe freld goals drdnt count It was the consrstent work at the charrty lrne that won thrs game Ken led Charlotte wrth eleven Shut teams for scorrng honors wrth 14 The second game wrth Everett was a seesaw battle all the way wrth the lead changrng hands sev eral trmes The help of Hans Kar del who turned out to be the league s leadrng scorer was mrssed ly the Orroles Kar del was unabl to play because of rllness Sparks was hrgh pornt man for Charlotte wrth eleven of the thrrty seven pornts Krnnane of Everett scored 11 of the from Charlotte first traveled to the Riger Rouge rnvrtatronal relays on Aprrl 15 There they frnrshed seventh out of a freld of 30 schools Ken Sparks was awarded a medal for outstand mg performance rn class B com petrtron To garn thrs award Ken had to break two relay marks Whrle dorng thrs he also broke a school record rn the pole vault Hrs other record was rn the shot put Ken went up 11 feet 9 rnches rn the pole vault and threw the shot 49 feet 10 rnches Next the Orroles went to Hast hrngs to take part rn the Hastrngs relays where they placed 6th out of 20 schools Here rs the way they the Orroles took second wrth 5115 pornts When Charlotte traveled to Kala nrazoo for the Kalamazoo College Relays Coach Gobel took Just two relay teams wrth hrm The shot put team consrstrng of Ken Sparks Jrm Ganrmage and Albert McDonald placed frrst wrth a total of 138 feet The other a sprrnt medley team placed fourth The Everett Vrkrngs were Char lottes next opponents The thrn clads had enough depth to get a. 6244 vrctory Charlotte came home wrth a sec ond place rn the Central Mrchrgan College relays wrth 29 schools com petrng rn Class B They were beat en by Ecorse by only erght pornts whrch rs very close rn a track meet Sparks agarn beat the hrgh school record by heavrng the shot 51 feet around they found themselves on the short end of a 21 to 18 score The second half was all Marshalls as they walked away wrth a. 54 to 34 vrctory Ken Sparks led the Orroles wrth 9 pornts Strrke Stride Again Charlotte Jumped rnto a lead and was never behrnd at any pornt of the game wrth Howell whrch was the next opponent Thrs vrc tory broke a three game losrrrg streak Kardel was agarn hrgh pornt man wrth 16 pornts Coach Isaac shrfted Gammage to forward and he ran off wrth scor rng honors wrth 12 pornts to lead the Orroles to a 37 to 24 vrctory over Grand Ledge The Mason game was another one of those nrp and tuck affarrs Just before the end of the half Kerr Sparks sank a basket to grve Char craped out a 51 to 46 vrf tory The last game with Eaton Rap lds was an easy vrctory for the Orange and Black 50 to '7 tvery player on the home bench saw actron Kardel dropped rn erghteen pornts to lead all scorers The Isaacmen brought th rr reg ular season to a close wrth a vrc tory over Hastrngs The Sctxorrs set the pace rn the frrst half lead rng 20 to 19 but the Barry coun ty boys traded basket for basket wrth the local lads untrl the Se ond half but then rt was Charlottes game Jrm Gammage led the Orroles to a 26 to 16 vrc tory by scorrng ten pornts On Saturday nrght the Orroles took on the Bears from St Joseph The frrst half was a slam bang affarr wrth St Joe emergrng wrth a 24 to 22 edge The Bears cut loose wrth a scorrng spree rn th tlrrrd stanza scorrng 13 pornts The CHARHIAN Share Honors with Masong Yield Only Four T D's For the second straight year the Orlole grrdders went through an undefeated season Although tled twice during the 49 season the Gobelmen managed to down the rest of the opposition with ease By dorng so the Orange and Black eleven gamed a share of the Capi tol Crrcult tltle belng co champions with Mason The Orloles took off ln hrgh gear by downrng Battle Creek Lakeview 13 0 After a 65 yard drive Pete Peterson flipped Jerry Clark a pass for the first tally Another pass play this time from Carleton Dornan to Jrm Gammage chalked up the second marker Ken Sparks dld the converslon for the extra pomt The Gobelmen then ran rnto a very stubborn Ionra eleven which held the Orioles to a 00 tie At one pornt rn the frnal quarter Ionra was wrthrn three yards of pay dirt only to be turned back by a frghtrng Orrole lrne Charlotte was on the Farr Towner s two yard lrne but was frnally subdued by Ionla League Play Opens Charlotte opened the scorlng ln the thlrd perlod of the Mason game when Jack Idle scampered around end for a 13 yard Jaunt into pay drrt and seemed to have the game rn the bag only to be dlsafppornted by a fourth quarter lnterceptlon in which Masons center Jim Ricklev gathered ln the plgskm and trotted rn across the whrte stripe Both teams attempts for the extra points were futile and the game ended rn a 6 6 tre Charlotte s grrd machme marched easrly over Grand Ledge 27 6 The Orrole backs were continuously gains Jack Idle led the scoring parade with two touchdowns fol lowed by Jerry Clark and Carleton Dornan with a T D apiece Ken Sparks kicked the Orioles three extra pornts The next game with Hastings was very rough for the local lads although they came out victorious 13 0 Idle and Fast were the boys who pushed through for T D s Brown sustained a twisted knee 1n the frrst quarter and had to leave the game Stop McMacken, Howell By putting on a two touchdown rally in the thrrd period the Orange and Black managed to defeat How ell 126 The Hrghlanders were ahead at half trme as a result of Bob McMackens touchdown The Gobelmen then recovered therr own kickoff at the start of the second half Harold Arkle Ri senhoover then snagged a pass to tie the score Drck Fast broke the deadlock by plungrng through the llne to give the Orioles a lead which was never relinqulshed By scorlng ln every perrod while Everett scored rts only touchdown rn the thrrd period the Orange and Blacks powerful grld machrn Orioles' Slate Clean Again, Fof7fffZCZfZfff1fZff Ties Mar Undefeated Year ery rolled over the Vikings 34-7.
