ORANGE Q. BLLACK Page 7 Annual Joint Concert Held Cadet Band Entertains During Time Between Oriole- Owosso Programs On Wednesday, December S. at 8:00 p. m., Charlotte had the pleas- ure of welcoming the Owosso high school band in a joint concert with the Oriole bands. A good sized audience was present in the audi- torium to hear an entertaining program. ln their performance. all three bands showed very good training in the fundamentals of music Led by the baton of Directo Carl Brenner the Owosso band opened the program with the live ly His Honor March featuring two twlrlers They made a good impression from the opening chords and especially gratifying was the excellent introduction and good balance ot parts The next number Pugal Fantasia was very difficult with various sections being heard in the fugal passages each one contributing its part to the pattern Although not perfect the band should be complimented on its fine work Fun1cul1Fun1 cula the third selection 111 the program was a clever arrange ment of the vsell known Italian song for band Stratoswmg Appeals The next number Stratoswing had great audience appeal written as it was in the style of swing, bands The band concluded with a stu ring piece Aurora Overture The Charlotte cadet band playcul a group of three marches Blaze ot Glory Xoung America and The Squadi on Considering thcn limited experience ensemblc work they played very well Then the Oriole band appeared on the stage NV1th Directoi Roh ert K. Powell guiding the tempo, the local musicians began with World Events March, being kept more interesting by the exhibition given by three twirlers. The sec- ond contribution, From the South, contained hits of the Ne- gro chants such as Go Down, Moa ses, Peter, Go Ring Dem Bells, Steal way, and Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho. Sections Perform Waggery For Woodwinds, a newly published number, was a more or less swing novelty featur- ing the woodwind section with solo cadenzas. The next selection, High Flyers, presented the cornet trio with band accompaniment. The last choice was Little Joe the Wrangler, a cowboy musical storv with some modern rhythm. For a high school band the Orio les have a remarkably good instru mentation They enter into the spirit of each selection and show the fine training they have receu While the two senior bands were preparing to play in mass band the cadet band again provided va riety with three selections Tune n Overture Lake Hamilton Nlaltz and Hail Hornets March Mass Band Pleases After a short delay while thr stage set up was being reorganized the curtains opened on the mem bers of both senior bands They played four marches Pride of the Wolverines The Skywrlter Drake Relays and Saratoga I'h1s was an excellent way in which to conclude the evenings entertainment The full bodied tones of all in struments were harmoniously com WINTER WONDERLAND Jobs Daughter Formal Dance Masonic Temple December 28 Barney McCardeI 200 couple 00 1 bined in the concluding chords. The entire program was narrated by Mr. C. J. Wotring, who did an excellent job of carrying on for Winfield Pardee, who couldn't be Master of Ceremonies because of sudden illness.
