The ,boys fought a hard battle all the way and were ahead at the half by the score of 15-10, but they could not hold the lead in the final periods. With three seconds left in the game, Charlotte was behind by one point. The Orioles had three shots at the basket in those three seconds, but c0uldn't connect and canre out on the short end of a 27-28 score. At Alma College, Dick Derby, Ray Mohre, and Bob Mohre have earned letters on varsity squads, Dick and Ray in football. Ray also is the captain-elect for next year. Bob has earned his letter in cross- country and is also participating in basketball, baseball, and track. The Mohre brothers are both on the Alma College varsity basketball squad this year. Milford Mason plays on Alma's junior varsity five. On the football varsity squad at Albion, Dick Beechler plays center'. BLLACK Page 7 Annual Joint Concert Held Cadet Band Entertains During Time Between Oriole- Owosso Programs On Wednesday, December S. at 8:00 p. m., Charlotte had the pleas- ure of welcoming the Owosso high school band in a joint concert with the Oriole bands. A good sized audience was present in the audi- torium to hear an entertaining program. ln their performance. all three bands showed very good training in the fundamentals of music Led by the baton of Directo Carl Brenner the Owosso band opened the program with the live ly His Honor March featuring two twlrlers They made a good impression from the opening chords and especially gratifying was the excellent introduction and good balance ot parts The next number Pugal Fantasia was very difficult with various sections being heard in the fugal passages each one contributing its part to the pattern Although not perfect the band should be complimented on its fine work Fun1cul1Fun1 cula the third selection 111 the program was a clever arrange ment of the vsell known Italian song for band Stratoswmg Appeals The next number Stratoswing had great audience appeal written as it was in the style of swing, bands The band concluded with a stu ring piece Aurora Overture The Charlotte cadet band playcul a group of three marches Blaze ot Glory Xoung America and The Squadi on Considering thcn limited experience ensemblc work they played very well Then the Oriole band appeared on the stage NV1th Directoi Roh ert K. Powell guiding the tempo, the local musicians began with World Events March, being kept more interesting by the exhibition given by three twirlers. The sec- ond contribution, From the South, contained hits of the Ne- gro chants such as Go Down, Moa ses, Peter, Go Ring Dem Bells, Steal way, and Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho. Sections Perform Waggery For Woodwinds, a newly published number, was a more or less swing novelty featur- ing the woodwind section with solo cadenzas. The next selection, High Flyers, presented the cornet trio with band accompaniment. The last choice was Little Joe the Wrangler, a cowboy musical storv with some modern rhythm. For a high school band the Orio les have a remarkably good instru mentation They enter into the spirit of each selection and show the fine training they have receu While the two senior bands were preparing to play in mass band the cadet band again provided va riety with three selections Tune n Overture Lake Hamilton Nlaltz and Hail Hornets March Mass Band Pleases After a short delay while thr stage set up was being reorganized the curtains opened on the mem bers of both senior bands They played four marches Pride of the Wolverines The Skywrlter Drake Relays and Saratoga I'h1s was an excellent way in which to conclude the evenings entertainment The full bodied tones of all in struments were harmoniously com WINTER WONDERLAND Jobs Daughter Formal Dance Masonic Temple December 28 Barney McCardeI 200 couple 00 1 bined in the concluding chords. The entire program was narrated by Mr. C. J. Wotring, who did an excellent job of carrying on for Winfield Pardee, who couldn't be Master of Ceremonies because of sudden illness. SEE SPANISH CLUB PROJECT For an interesting project, the second year Spanish class. is plan' ning to set up a Nativity scene in the second floor showcase.
