There is an outstanding tradition of excellence among the runners of the Charlevoix High Schools Cross Country Team. Over the last eight years the boy's team has gone undefeated in conference competition, brought home the regional crown four times, and captured three state championships, including the one for 1987. There are many reasons for this spectacular record, three important ones, stand out in my mind One mayor part of any successful team is, of course, the quality of the runners. In the four years l ran on the team, three of our runners received allestate recognition, one of them, Senior Pat Raiewski, three times. Eleven runners made the all-regional team. including another Senior Betsy Haggard. who was the first girl ever from Charlevoix to do so. An amaz- ing thirteen runners, almost every varsity member. made all-conference at least one of the last four years, The runners could not do it alone, however. and the team had the good luck of being coached by the best coaching combination in the statei Pete Spieles and Ken Plude. Under Coach Spieles' com- mand, Charlevoix Cross Country has the distinction of having the best record in Class C competition in the 8O's. The program that Mr. Spieles follows is not extraordinary, but the quality of the workouts he selects, and the tremendous amount of personal energy he dedicates to each runner, and to the team in general, brings out the best in everyone. What will l remember best about Charlevoix Cross Country is the fact that we were a team devoted to our sport and to each other. Every runner encour- aged everyone else, l cannot imagine another sport where the players care so much that their team- mates do well. We ran our best for the Charlevoix Cross Country Team: for the tradition, for the experi- ence, and for ourselves. Every runner that finishes a race knows that he or she is special, possessing the ability to accomplish a determined goal. Despite the powerful accomplishments of the boy's varsity, there are other runners, just as impor- tant to a State Championship Team - the Junior Varsity Team and the Girls' Team. l look forward, in future years, to seeing the con- tinued success of Charlevoix's Cross Country tradi- tion. The program will remain the same. only the runners will change. Each generation of runners will. under Pete Spieles' careful tutelage. become a team, improving themselves and each other far be- yond what they do in the races. The experience of Charlevoix Cross Country is a wonderful one, it is an integral part of high school that the Class of 'SS leaves behind. By Sean Henne 5
