It is the price that every football team must pay if they hope to win, and the '78 Rayder football team paid as much as any team. We moaned and groaned to and from the locker room, but when it came to the practice field we all tried our hardest, often coming up with bloody knuckles, pulled muscles, and bruised bodies. When the first game was over it looked as though we were on our way to another outstanding season, however, later on we ran into some excellent teams and ended the season with a 5 and 4 record. Despite ending with a not so perfect record, the season was still rewarding to each and everyone of us because we were a team, a big family. Nothing can replace in our memory the fantastic feeling of knowing you executed your assignment perfectly, or the guilt, because you let your team down when you missed a block or tackle. But, the joy and the pain did not last long because the coaches could always find something to tell you to improve, or your team mate would pat you on the rear and say, Don't worry about it, just get him twice as hard the next time. Coming back from Christmas vacation the Rayders started out the New Year on a different foot. They beat Boyne City, Kalkaska and Petoskey. After a disappointing loss to Gaylord, the Rayders stormed by Onaway, Cheboygan and Harbor Springs. The oy Rayders' momentum was quickly stopped by a strong St. Ignace lr squad. Kalkaska was an enjoyable victory, a prelude to the Rayders' Homecoming victory over Boyne City. A bad loss to Harbor Springs was soon forgotten after Rayder tromping of Petoskey. The season ended with victories over Onaway and Rogers City. District finals started with a victory over Onaway. East Jordan was a tough battle that soon turned into a coaches war with the best coach winning. Rogers City was a long hard game with the Rayders winning the District Championship. In Regional tournament play, the Rayders who were thought to be underdogs, won by a close score. Unable to do the same with Tawas area, the team ended a long, hard season. lard: -4,01 Haired c w Clvmhof 2 H 5 l lllilrvnl X fl 1 ....... Front row, left to right: Co-captain B. We started out by taking the conference trophy with only two conference loses, both to St. Ignace. After defeating East Jordan and Boyne City, we brought home the District Championship. Our winning streak came to an end after losing to Alcona in the final game of Regionals. During the season we had support from our parents and the community, both of which helped us to reach our desired goals. Major contributions from our coach Toni Felter were rewarded with numerous victory showers, resulting in cold, damp rides home. There was the annual building of the floats, the crazy Spirit Week, and the voting for the Homecoming Queen. Gail Hansen was voted to reign over the activities of Homecoming 1978. Gail was escorted by Mark Way on Friday night when she received her crown, at Kipke Field. Other members of the court were Lori Fels escorted by Mark Lignell, Brenda Boss escorted by Mike Custer, Sheri Mol escorted by Kip Green, and Cindy Sandahl escorted by Gerry Keie. The rainy evening did not ruin the Rayder spirit of the football team or the Rayder Marching Band. The football team had a glorious victory and the band performed an excellent show. The traditional Homecoming dance was held after the game at the K-5 to top off the exciting evening. 44 64 . 1 .,., ,W I , ' ' 1: ,- ,ffifl-rw, A 4. v2,Hz,...,,f ' l 1 v .- 'il , g ln bf X W f . , L S' 4 y . Because practice makes perfect, the members of the Rayder Marching Band often got up an hour early to find their way to the frost covered field to practice before school. Their hard work always paid off though, for Friday nights brought the excitement of knowing they'd be helping to prep up our football team by being there to support them and cheer them on. After having a successful marching season, they carried their perfected talent to Holland in Spring to capture a first in their competition field. The end of the year meant many sad goodbyes to many talented seniors and Mr. Stutzman. Shakespeare's script didn't provide the only comedy however. The actors and actresses had the audiences rolling in the aisles with the truly accidental situations of ripped skirts and broken stools. As the team remembers the awards, tights on the boys, and getting kicked in the rear, they recall the time when Shakespeare did live! .ying xi Q. .- ,. -., 'li' S v ay C T11 i 1 .ii 7979 Forensics Forensics at CSH has traditionally been thought of as a fun and frolicsome activity. But this year's team attempted to do more than just have fun. They thought of forensics as an art and looked for the answers to deep, philosophical, like why do mosquitoes buzz in people's ears? They were true artists, for they succeeded in the art of winning trophies. Opponents began to fear these artists from Charlevoix as they won trophy after trophy. At State Finals in Ann Arbor, they proved their artistic abilities. They won the C-D State Championship. These artists did manage to ave some fun on the side, however. They once put a handicapped parking sign on the bus, but MF made them put it back. In the hotels, they spent their extra time by paging each other - WiIl Carla Sizemore please come to the front desk? -, posting BFD signs, and swinging from balcony to balcony. Despite these antics, they did dedicate themselves to their art. They managed to find out why mosquitoes buzz in people's ears. So if you're looking for the answer and can spare 8 minutes of your time, just ask Goeff. 1 4 lA ESQ? 'W ,xg . 4-md..
