That head of yours gets bigger after every seasonf' Even with these questionable beginnings, this year's Rayder football team stormed to a portion of the conference crown. The season began with a slow start against Onaway, but the team shifted into high gear at Benzie Central as the Rayders started their winning ways. These winning ways were thanks for hard practice to which Coaches Carey, Presnell, and Cowell contributed largely. Even though some of the players got sinus headaches from the smell of BenGay, sprained thumbs were the cheif issue of each practice. Finally as the season came to an end, this year's Rayder football team finished another great season. Us tn 1 cgi -7 11' X-Lx In fl . Maybe part ofthe girls sucess was the way they prepared for the away games. On the bus, they got themselves uphysched up' by reading certain magazines. Because the girls weren't real serious about the games, they were able to have fun both on and off the court. Besides enjoying the shooting, dribbling, and passing, the girls had plenty of locker-room fun. This fun included sliding races on the shower-room floor, and the taking of pictures while doing T so. So the year wasn't a failure any way you look at it. . f if In 'buff - L v A K .Ll 4' 1 , In .' Commercials .... Main Street was buzzing with stu- dents. busy painting victory slogans on store windows. Garages were filled with pure pandemonium as classes did last minute touches on their floats. The queen to be and her court were prob- ably the five most nervous girls in Charlevoix. You could feel the excit- ment in the air as everyone waited for the evenings results. And the 1977 Fall Homecoming Queen is . . . Julie Wimmer!! Friday was a total waste as far as school was concerned. Nobody could study because their minds were center- ed on the night's game. Finally it was 7:00 and the rain was beating down hard, destroying all the work that had been done on the floats, but still they drove on. First was taken by the Soph- omores with, McRayders,,' second by the Freshmen with, Coke Adds Life, and the Juniors in third with, How Do the Saints Spell Grief? All were battered and torn by the wind and rain but it seemed that the Seniors bombed the worst when their float caught a strong gust of wind while crossing the bridge. Needless to say, the Seniors took last place with their float, 'gRight Guard. Mr. Stutzman and his band put on one of their great half time shows to help the Rayders defeat St. Ignace. Everyone put forth all their ef- fort and craziness: and were rewarded with a victory dance. 'Y itil 00 .--unnlllili The Big Game rn, t Q 'm 51 K 3391 x 3, 4 - i - 1. 5 . Unfortunatly, student life is more than football games and extra-curricular aetivitiesg student life is also having responsibilities toward classes. Students spend time working on Class projects, homework assignments, and studying for exams to fulfill their responsibliities. Then there is the fun side of classes: the teachers, jokes? Now, now, just calm down, welre still in the game. Now, play one. Bud, you bring the ball down to center court and shoot, Mid you get the rebound and breathe hard, Scott you then go to the outside and dance on your tiptoes for a while. Matt you go in the corner and be quiet, Neil, see how many times you can touch the rim. That's a far cry from what the super Rayder team was really like. The Ray- I 7'f57fi 3Y'2 ' SWT ders burned the courts, and some oppo nents to bring home a school record of 18 wins, 5 loses. Along with the rec- ord, the team also took home the con- ference trophy, which hasn't been set in the trophy case for many years. All this may never have happened, but thanks to hard practices and determina- tion, it did. Sure, all the of practices gave some pain, but at the end ofthe season, the pain changed to pride. - 1 iw . N Begging You Please . ...let us win! With cramped legs from new knee-pads and a brand new coach, the varsity volleyball team finished with a disappoint- ing 9-9 record, even though they did finish fourth out of eight teams. With only four returning lettermen, what can you expect? The very first year of a JV team and they finish with a bet ter record. That just goes to show what youth can do. This season won't be forgotten, for the memory of the snowed-in Rodgers City game, and the sweet singing of the varsity girls will stay in the minds of the girls for years to come. x Rx . We would like to thank all of them for their hard work and effort throughout the school year, we would also like to express our graditude to Mr. McKimmy for his expertise as Superintendent: and we are sorry he is leaving us. Trying to keep a school running in the seventies has been a rough task for those who have been given the dif- ficult duties. The soaring costs of education coupled with the millage vote that seems to go down every time, at least for the first one or two ballots, have been the problems that faced the Charlevoix Board of Education. Y ' l. l With knocking knees, the Freshmen class entered the massive gymnasium of Charlevoix High School, not knowing what the year had in store for them. The first pep meeting was indeed a surprise, and will long be remembered. It took them awhile to catch on but finally they got it. Their float placing second at Fall Homecoming brought yet another surprise. Their few bakesales could be called unsuccessful failures. Other money-raising activ- ities also bombed. Winter Homecoming showed they had spirit, but not quite enough to beat the sophomores. Then came their first exams,', dreaded and feared by all. The year wasnlt a com- plete failure though. They did break one record. Their lockers had the most writing on them in the history of CHS. All in all, this indeed was a year of surprises and memories for the class of 8O,'. . . Filing into the gym with last years ex- periences in memory, they were prepared to enjoy watching the Freshmen undergo the same torture and humility that they once knew. Being big mouths of the school is quite a name to live up to, but the Sophomores have mastered it! Pep rallies became no competition, for the Sophomore always had a sure win. Spirit? Yes, the Sophomores are packed with it, they led the school as far as energy is concerned. Spirit week, hall decor- ations, homecoming floats, yes the Sophomore won them all! On the other hand they might have been wrapped up in pleasure too much, for they led the school with a record of sixty-one over-due books! Bellows as 1' i' c 1 WA It all started about thirteen years ago, when we learned how to count from one to ten, to get along with other kids, tso they thought P. to finger paint, and how to tell the girl's restroom from the boy's. As time went by, things chang- ed and so did we. Junior High and braces had arrived. Then came the impossible, High School. With football games, dances, and for some lucky freshmen, a glimpse at the Prom. But, nothing could compare to the dream ofbeing a senior, and the rule of the halls. We had a head start of ruling, when we took over the heater in front of the main office. Then it was all over. Gradu- ' ation had come and the only thing left was the memories of our High School years, never to be forgotten. Thomas L.
