The Dawning Leaders Cf The Pack lf you think your school days are busy. you should spend it with one of those dedicated people who spend part of their time behind a desk, type- writer. or telephone. Although most students rarely see them maybe itis be- cause they avoid them-they are the ones who are behind most things that happen during the day. Some ofthe more familiar faces in the halls of CHS. are those ofthat hard-working sect labeled as teachers They are the people who are so kind as to pre- scribe homework for any and all ail- ments that students could possibly in- cur during the school year. However, this year some ofthe teachers found a little more time to relax as they were aided by several eager student teachers. As in the beginning, it is equally tit- ting to say that in the Davvning there is The Faculty. jg? , Mft? , f ,M Superintendent: James McKimmy seated: V. Smith, Principal, J. Grubaugh, Secretary, R. Student Gov't Gains Ground The Student Council bravely launched into a new year with bright and early morning meetings tC'mon you guys, wake uplj. As council members stumbled in with sleepy eyes, they stumbled out with tistfulls of Bic Bananas to sell to raise money for a new trophy case. Students from Boyne City could be seen regularly in CHS through several Stu- dent Council exchanges and seminars with BCHS. Government moved ahead with three amendments to the Student Constitution and a new handbook. The year ended with smiles by way of a Muscular Dystro- phy Drive, held by the Council called Smile Saturdayf' -f. NX .. One of them might have been because you were talking to one ol' our foreign ex- change students, and talk they did! We all learned all about Norway, Finland, Greece and Brazil, as well as having our own kids spend summers in Denmark and that land over the horizon, Japan. Ot' all the students at C.H.S., the ex- change students will always be the hardest to forget. ? Frolicking Freshmen A Forced into the frigid fantasy of foreign halls. the frolicking Freshmen forge the way for frivolous fun. No fanfare greets these fragile fellows. For fateful reasons. fraternizing with the fanatical former freshmen is for- bidden. Feeling forlorn. finally the forsaken Freshmen fight for freedom in the foul forum and frankly, soon become favorite fans of our foremost friends. They started the year not knowing what to expect. But now, as their Freshmen year fades into the past, there are many fond memories to re- call. Their float, The Night We Tracked St. Ignace Down, won first place. much to everyone's surprise. Their day of revenge finally came on Senior Slave Day. when they could exercise some authority over their superiors. They left the year a little bit wiser and with Great Expectations. We bid now a fond farewell to Freshmen days and silently slip into the slightly more sophisticated Sopho- more style. W 3 .... Whitley Michael Whitley Wendy Wieland Lisa Wiemer Mark Wiklanski Kevin Wilks Peter Winnick Holly Wojan Gregory Wojan Brad Wood Leroy Wynkoop Everyone's Work Is A Portion Of the Whole The Red Rayder Marching Band continued their steady climb to marching greatness with performances on the field this year unequaled in CHS history. Led by Ind year drum major Jim Sundberg and debuting Golden Girl Debbie Krueger, the band marched to Peshtigo under the baton of director Gary Stutzman to give an explosive combined show with the Peshtigo band at Peshtigo and a post game at N.M.U. lt all made a day and a season always to be remembered as a Red Rayder Marching Band highlight. It was a memorable season all right and it began with PAIN!! Summer band camp under the hot August sun brought out 'gthe crab in everyone. But despite all the sore muscles and empty Ben Gaye tubes, everyone knew it was worth it when the flag girls did their strip tease routine and the crowd went wild. Dazzling features like music from New World Symphony, the Entertainer, a special Truth Serum combo and a Tuba Feature showing us a different side of the tuba players-the backside-added spirit to every game, every player, and every fan. To show their appreciation to director Gary Stutzman the Seniors presented him with a plaque naming him Chief Band Fairyw and treated the Stutzmans to dinner to repay Mrs. Stutzman for all the nights Stutz spent away from home. And as the last strains of MacArthur Park faded from the field even higher heights of marching band great- ness loomed on the horizon. Kacz's Chicky Clickers All cheerleaders know about all the headaches and has- sles that go along with cheering-so does their advisor. This year they kept Mrs. Kaczynski as busy as ever with learning new cheers and deciding what to do for pep meetings. They were helped out by attending a clinic and coming home with such ideas as mini-cheerleaders -at least they were big in spirit. The Varsity squad finally got stretch pants for the football season. The J.V. and Freshman squads continued to suffer from the cruel fate of frostbite and flaky skin, as they stuck to wearing skirts. It was a totally different story during basketball season as they shed their pants and donned their wynnies. All throughout the gym there were sighs of exhaustion and complaints like, Can't we open the doors? lt's boiling in here! ,- ,4f'3v's si 19' saws, Advisor, Mrs. Kaczynski Wgg C-' 1 X ll ma x r 5 ... .9 . y 5 um .4-- my at - H .,.. y at ' 5 iw B . This year saw the Freshmen win the float competition, much to the surprise of the Juniors in second and much to the embarrass- ment of the Seniors ir1 third place, saved from the total embarrassment of last place only by the ingenuity of the Sophomores. The dynamic Red Ray- der Marching Band and our squad of cheerleaders led the way with spirit both in the parade and at the field . with an enthusiastic crowd to back them up. Smiles could be seen all around as the mighty Rayders' finally penetrated the tough St. Ignace de- fense and brought in a Rayder victory. All the sparkles, spirit, and smiles of one memorable Homecoming evening culminated in a dance after the game. In fact, at the awards night Mr. Probert seemed to hand out more plaques than everyone else put to- gether! With a hard working coach behind you, making you lift those weights and run those stairs, you knew something good had to come out of it. As always there were the fish awards. and the starvation diets to lose two pounds before the meet that night, but that's all a part of wrestling. The guys all try to look mean and aggressive, but everyone knows that they're quiet and reserved on the inside . . . right? The team qualified four of the more reserved wrestlers for State compe- tition, and returned home with a second place earned by Phil Christ. But everyone knows none of it wouldlve been possible without such dedication by one of the most outstanding coaches in Michigan4Coach Pro- bert. WRESTLING TEAM, lst row, from left: M. Byard C. Questions arose in our minds early in the season when the pep talks began with, This, men, is a basketball. lt has a strange effect on the scoreboard when thrown through the basket. Those pep talks seemed to work most of the time. The only problem was that the other coach must have said the same thing, only meaner. Aggression seemed to be the key to the Varsity squad this year as they came back to finish strong-handing in a 5 win. 9 loss conference record. Their record may be somewhat disillusioning though, because of the games were lost by slim margins, like in Districts. Even though the Rayder team didn't influence the score- board enough sometimes, their effect on the crowd was enough to maintain that great Rayder spirit that is always electrifying. Not awarded for sports are the boys and girls staters, although the boys might argue that it was a sport. It's never hard to forget the speeches by Mr. Probert and Mr. Car- ey. However, in all fairness Mr. Carey's speech was shorter than usual. Some- times you wonder if they wanted the award. lt always seems like the letters are thinner and the certificates smaller, but they still mean just as much. It's a time of remembering all the hard work, the times you wanted to just skip practice-but didn't-and kept on working anyway, and all the butter- flies that seemed to invade your stom- ach before the big game or meet. Sure, it's a time to relive all the ex- citing moments, but it's even more exciting to look ahead. - I 4? 'Tr 'T' i gil 1 L jx. ff. ALL CONFERENCE CROSS COUNTRY: W. They most often originate from Mrs. Ford's room as the Drama team gets ready for production. Those strange noises were just a small part of all the hard work that was put into the show. It took even more work than usual, because they tried some- thing new-a musical. The whole Pea- nuts gang learned how to sing and act at the same time. There were all the headaches that accompany the pro- duction ofa show like learning to put on make-up, convincing the boys that they looked good in eyeliner, carrying a dog dish in your mouth, dancing with a blanket, learning to like Beethoven, learning your lines in the hospital, and the ultimate of eating a peanut butter sandwich and talking at the same time. It all paid off when the trophy was Won and the performances were over. There was even some sadness when you heard You're a good man, Char- lie Brown! for the last time. For a while, they seemed to run Old McDonaldls farm. raffling off turkeys, pumpkins and a side of beef. Thats a lot of bull! It all added up for a plentiful harvest helping them to somewhat over- come the notorious bank deficit that always ac- companies the prom. Not only did the bank ac- count suffer, but also all those hard working Juniors behind it. And the Sophomores can't wait until they're Juniors? Boy are they disillusioned. The float didn't quite make it up the last step to victory as the Freshmen float squeaked by and took first. But then we have to remember that the Freshmen think they accomplished something, so the Juniors played along. Their revenge will come in a couple of years when the Freshmen are Ju- niors and they'll have to take History. It was a very good year over all, even if the secret pass- word was PSATXNMSQT. Then, while watching all those Seniors graduate, the realization came that the remainder of the upperclassmen was gone . . . and they envied them. ,-0 1 . CLASS OFFICERS, lst row, from left: H. The year was a special one for the Symphony Band, for it was the last one for Mr. Odmark on the director's podium. The band supplied crisis and concerts to Mr. Odmark's memo- ries ofC.H.S .... crisis like a bus-smashed baritone six minutes before the State festival, a widespread absenteeism epidemic, and concerts like the final spring concert for Odie which brought congratulations and a few tears. As the year ended for the Symphonic Band and Mr. Odmark, the future on the hori- zon for the great C.H.S. Earlier in the year they par- ticipated in the M.S.U. and Chip relays and even brought home some medals. But the laughs came despite the poverty with CHEAP trips to Ann Arbor and the Bagel Factory, the Ann Arbor Hilton's swimming pool, dinner at Weber's, and gas station rest stops. Forensics seemed to come on top of many other activities this year and the rush ofthe forensic folks was fanat- ical. By Junior High the class of '75 had become the rowdy class they were destined to be. The new found daring was tried out on a fresh, new teachereeMr. lvlatchinski. He soon discovered this was no ordinary class when his room was ran- sacked, flooded. and set on fire. There were also the days of Home Ee for boys AND girls, being turned upside down by Mr. Burns to learn what a reciprocal was, and dances with records. By High School this class had grown up a little more and were kept in line by seniors that seemed SO large and SO old, There were the sin bins, marching band and spec buses. Finally after much complaining these 147 students became mighty seniors and ruled C.H.S. with an iron hand. The good times were good, but though it's good to re- member, it's better still to look ahead and dream of future memories. W-fm..,., ..., . Mrs Frances Novak MIS- -lan Odmark p,,,,,,L.-h-- W wanna After many years of unending ser- vice to the students of C.H.S., we say a warm thank-you and good-bye to three of our most dedicated instruc- tors. They will be leaving us after many years of pie crusts, Roman ban- quets, syncopated rhythms and quadra tic formulas. As they leave they will carry with them the fond memories of getting I ratings at band festivals, a trip to Rome, and the most anyone could ask for, a Bachelor Cooking class. Throughout all their years at Charlevoix High, these teachers have taught more students than any other teacher currently at C.H.S. For this we canit express our thanks enough ex- cept to say that they will truly be missed and Charlevoix will always hold the marks that they have made on our educational system.
